Month of Dhul Hijja - Some hadiths, virtues, rulings for Udhiya

    Report bad ads?

Dhul Hijjah is the last month of the Islamic calendar. Literally, it means "Possessor of the Pilgrimage" or "The Month of the Pilgrimage." Obviously, this name of the month indicates that the great annual worship of "hajj" is performed in this month, which gives it special significance. Some specific merits and rules relevant to this month are mentioned below:

FIRST TEN DAYS OF DHUL HIJJA

    Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijja)."
Then some companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Not even Jihad?"
He replied, "Not even Jihad, except that of a man who does it by putting himself and his property in danger (for Allah's sake) and does not return with any of those things."

It was narrated from Hunaidah bin Khalid, from his wife, from one of the wives of the Prophet, that:
The Messenger of Allah used to fast nine days of Dhul-Hijjah,
the day of 'Ashura', and three days of each month: The first Monday of the month, and two Thursday.

There is another hadith which is often quotes to mention virtues of the first ten days of this month but that hadith is Da'if (weak)

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“There are no days in this world during which worship is more beloved to Allah, Glorious is He, than the (first) ten days (of Dhul- Hijjah). Fasting one of these days is equivalent to fasting for one year, and one night of them is equal to Lailatul-Qadr.”

9TH DAY OF DHUL HIJJA (YOUMUL 'ARAFAH)
The 9th day of Dhul Hijja is called "Youmul - 'Arafah" (The Day of 'Arafah). This is the day when the Hujjaj assemble on the plain of 'Arafat, six miles away from Makkah al-Mukarramah, where they perform the most essential part of the prescribed duties of hajj, namely, the Wuqoof of'Arafat (the stay in 'Arafat).
People who perform Hajj are not supposed to fast on the day of 'Arafah, based on following hadiths:
    Narrated Maimuna:
The people doubted whether the Prophet (ﷺ) was fasting on the day of `Arafat or not, so I sent milk while he was standing at `Arafat, he drank it and the people were looking at him.

Reward for fasting on 9th of Dhul Hijja for non-pilgrims:
It was narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

    WHAT IS MEANT BY UDHIYA?

The word udhiyah means an animal of the ‘an’aam class (i.e., camel, cow, sheep or goat) that is slaughtered during the days of Eid al-Adha because of the Eid and as an act of worship, intending to draw closer to Allah thereby.
    IS UDHIYA SUNNAH OR FARD?
Scholars have difference of opinion in this regard. Hanafi Muslims consider it to be obligatory ( for those who are able to do so) while other schools of though consider it as a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah mu’akkadah). Here one needs to understand a difference between fard and Sunnah. Anything which is considered fard or Wajib falls in the category of obligation and if one does not do it, he/she is considered sinful. On the other hand Sunnah whether confirmed or not, is not an obligation and one will not be sinful for not doing it.
    According to Islamqa:
The majority of scholars are of the view that it is Sunnah mu’akkadah. This is the view of al-Shaafa’i, Maalik and Ahmad according to his most well-known view.
Others were of the view that it is obligatory. This is the view of Abu Haneefah and one of the views narrated from Ahmad. This was also the view favoured by Ibn Taymiyah who said: “This is one of the views narrated in the madhhab of Maalik, or it appears to be the view of Maalik.”
From Risaalat Ahkaam al-Udhiyah wa’l-Dhakaah by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him).
Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “Udhiyah is Sunnah mu’akkadah for the one who is able to do it, so a person should offer the sacrifice on behalf of himself and the members of his household.”
    Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 2/661.
IS CUTTING NAILS AND HAIR PROHIBITED IN FIRST TEN DAYS OF DHUL HIJJA?

Umm Salama reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying:
If anyone of you intends to offer sacrifice he should not get his hair cut or nails trimmed.

USC-MSA web (English) reference: Book 22, Hadith 4870

We can conclude following from this hadith:

    • If the onset of Dhu’l-Hijjah has been proven and a person wants to offer a sacrifice, it is haram for him to remove anything from the hair on his body or to cut his nails or any part of his skin.
      • This ruling applies only to the one who is going to offer the sacrifice, and not to the rest of his family, and not to the one whom he appoints to slaughter the sacrifice on his behalf.
      • No differentiation is made between men and women with regard to this ruling. If a woman wants to offer a sacrifice on her own behalf, whether she is married or not, then she should refrain from removing any hair from her body or cutting her nails, because of the general meaning of the texts which state that that is not allowed.
      • Whoever removes anything from his hair or nails although he plans to offer a sacrifice does not have to offer any fidyah (ransom) according to
scholarly consensus, whether he did that deliberately or out of forgetfulness. B
ut he has to repent and seek forgiveness.
      • What is the logic behind this prohibition?
        Al-Shawkaani said:
The reason behind this prohibition is so that all parts will remain to be ransomed from the Fire, or it was said that it is so that he will resemble the one who is in ihraam. Both views were narrated by al-Nawawi, but he narrated from the companions of al-Shaafa’i that the second view is a mistake, because (the person who wants to offer a sacrifice) does not keep away from women or stop putting on perfume or wearing regular clothes, and other things which the person in ihraam refrains from.
        Nayl al-Awtaar, 5/133

    • None of these things are haraam for the one who does not intend to offer a sacrifice because he is unable to.

WHAT IN THE MINIMUM AGE FOR THE ANIMAL OF SACRIFICE?

Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Sacrifice only a grown-up animal, unless it is difficult for you, in which case sacrifice a ram (of even less than a year, but more than six months' age).

    In-book reference: Book 35, Hadith 19
USC-MSA web (English) reference: Book 22, Hadith 4836
    https://sunnah.com/muslim/35

A grown-up animal means one that is considered to be an adult. The jadh’ah is that which is half a year old. So it is not correct to sacrifice a camel, cow or goat that has not yet reached maturity, or a sheep that is less than six months old. Below is understanding of minimum age in different madhabs.
    • Sheep
      • Six months, according to the Hanafis and Hanbalis.
      • One year, according to the Maalikis and Shaafa’is.

    • Goats
      • One year according to the Hanafis, Maalikis and Hanbalis.
      • Two years according to the Shaafa’is.

    • Cows
      • Two years according to the Hanafis, Shaafa’is and Hanbalis.
      • Three years according to the Maalikis.

    • Camels
      • Five years according to the Hanafis, Maalikis, Shaafa’is and Hanbalis.

For more details see - age of sacrificial animals per Islamqa.
Sacrifice of a cow or a camel equal 7 sacrifices.
It is also important to mention that the common practice at the time of Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions was to sacrifice only a sheep for the entire house hold. It is not necessary to sacrifice one animal for each member of the house hold, as it is indicated in hadith below:
    Narrated 'Ata bin Yasar:
"I asked Abu Abyub [Al-Ansari] how the slaughtering was done during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: 'A man would sacrifice a sheep for himself and the people in his household. They would eat from it and feed others, until the people (later) would boast about it and it became as you see now."

    WHAT ANIMALS CANE BE SLAUGHTERED?
The animal to be slaughtered should be one of the an’aam class of animals, which are: camels, cattle, sheep and goats, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
And for every nation We have appointed religious ceremonies, that they may mention the Name of Allaah over the beast of cattle that He has given them for food[al-Hajj 22:34]
Baheemat al-an’aam (translated here as “beast of cattle”) includes camels, cattle and sheep. This is what is well known among the Arabs, and this was the view of al-Hasan, Qataadah and others.

TIME OF SACRIFICE ( AFTER EID PRAYER TILL JUST BEFORE SUNSET OF 13TH OF DHUL-HIJJAH)

An animal for udhiyah should be slaughtered at the time specified in sharee’ah, which is from after the Eid prayer on the Day of Sacrifice until sunset on the last of the days of al-Tashreeq, which is the 13th of Dhu’l-Hijjah. So the days when the sacrificed may be offered are four: the day of Eid after the prayer, and the three days after that. Whoever slaughters it before the Eid prayer is over, or after sun sets on the 13th of Dhu’l-Hijjah, his sacrifice is not valid.

    The evidence is following hadith:
    Narrated Jundab:
On the day of Nahr the Prophet (ﷺ) offered the prayer and delivered the Khutba and then slaughtered the sacrifice and said, "Anybody who slaughtered (his sacrifice) before the prayer should slaughter another animal in lieu of it, and the one who has not yet slaughtered should slaughter the sacrifice mentioning Allah's name on it."

    Q/A ON THIS SUBJECT:

Video below shortly answers some conditions for the animals which can be slaughtered, minimum age of the animal to be slaughtered and how to divide the meat of scarified animal between poor/needy, relatives and yourself.

Video below shortly answers which sacrifice is better - a camel or cow, a share in camel or cow or a sheep? It also briefly touches upon whether udhiyah is Sunnah or Fard.

Another video below clarifies that one animal is sufficient to be slaughtered on behalf of entire family.

Is it an innovation to sacrifice for Muslim ummah?
Is it an innovation to sacrifice for prophet (peace be upon him)? Did companions did anything like that?
Can we sacrifice for our deceased?

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The best invocation is that of the Day of Arafat, and the best that anyone can say is what I and the Prophets before me have said:
    Lā 'ilāha 'illallāhu
    wahdahu lā shareeka lahu,
    lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu
wa Huwa 'alā kulli shay'in qadeer.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The best invocation is that of the Day of Arafat, and the best that anyone can say is what I and the Prophets before me have
    said:
None has the right to be worshipped but Allah
    Alone, Who has no partner.
His is the dominion and His is the praise,
and He is Able to do all things.

Re: Month of Dhul Hijja - Some hadiths, virtues, rulings for Udhiya

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
There is no day when God sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of 'Arafa. He draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want?

Re: Month of Dhul Hijja - Some hadiths, virtues, rulings for Udhiya

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ziyad ibn Abi Ziyad from Talha ibn Ubaydullah ibn Kariz that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The best dua is dua on the day of Arafa, and the best thing that I or the Prophets before me have said is 'There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner' (La ilaha illa'llah, wahdahu la sharika lah.)"

Re: Month of Dhul Hijja - Some hadiths, virtues, rulings for Udhiya

Things to Do on the Day of Arafah

    1. Fasting on the Day of Arafah: Fasting is highly encouraged and recommended for those not going on hajj. According to a hadith in Sahih Muslim fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.
    2. Reciting the du'aa of Arafah: According to a hadith is Muwatta, Prophet(peace be upon him) said that the most excellent dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said, is
    3. Making Tahleel, Takbeer, Tahmeed and Tasbeeh: Its is a sunnah of our Prophet (peace be upon him) to recite the Tahleel, Takbeer and Tahmeed as many times as possible on the day of Arafah, and also on the days of Tashreeq (11, 12 and 13th of Dhul Hijjah). Tahleel is to say "Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah", Takbeer is to say "Allahu Akbar", Tahmeed is to say "Alhamdulillaah" and Tasbeeh is to say "Subhanallaah".
    4. Seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah: This is the day when Allah frees His slaves from Hell fire more than any other day. It is therefore recommended to make lot of Du'aa and keep asking Allah for forgiveness. Those who go to Hajj, do nothing on this day other than glorifying Allah and continuously making du'aa especially after Dhuar time will the sun set on the 9th of Dhul Hijja.

Opportunities like this only comes once a year and who knows if we will live to see this day next year or not. So make the best use of this day.
