    Touching a dog

    Report bad ads?

I have a question about cleaning myself and clothing/shoes after touching dog.

I know if both my hand/clothing are dry in contact with dry fur, it is OK.
If my hand is moist when I touch the dog or if the dog lick my hand etc I have to wash with 1 x water mixed with earth and 6 x with clean water.

My Question : If situation is such that the dog licks my hand and before I have the chance to wash as I should and I wash my hand with only water and soap then I scratch my nose or touch my cloths, do I need to perform the taharah of 1+6 on my nose and clothing also?

I would really appreciate if anyone can advice me? Dear LI members with experience of keeping dog, please advice me on how to handle dog with minimum contact.

P.S : I've adopted a puppy over a week ago, rescued from a river and I couldn't let it go being too small. Hopefully it will become a guard dog when it grows up. I took it to the vet for check up and was told to bring it back for a few more medication and vaccination. He is a 2 month old mix doberman with local mongrel I found that I have to handle him with my hands especially during feeding and cleaning the dog house.

Please, I really need some advice here.

Thank you sis Syilla. I tried the bincang.net but it doesn’t help much. It breaks my heart too, when I read the post by non-practising muslim.

Malays don't normally keep dog and I have asked this question to a few and the views are from totally different perspective. [ie don't keep one]

I would love to learn especially from LI members with experience of keeping dogs. While not keeping one is easy, I cannot run away from reality that I have to keep this puppy, if not for life, at least for a few month until it grow stronger and can fend for itself. I am so very worried because apart from I couldn't help loving the puppy and I also don’t want to have to answer during hisab if a puppy request justice from Allah because I have indirectly left him to die by refusing to care for him when I have the power and means to do so.

    Re: Touching a dog

^^^lol MashaAllah...than i'm sure its okay for you to take care of the puppy.

    Remember this story

"While a man was walking along a road, he became very thirsty and found a well. He lowered himself into the well, drank, and came out. Then [he saw] a dog protruding its tongue out with thirst. The man said: 'This dog has become exhausted from thirst in the same way as I.' He lowered himself into the well again and filled his shoe with water. He gave the dog some water to drink. He thanked God, and [his sins were] forgiven.' The Prophet was then asked: 'Is there a reward for us in our animals?' He said: 'There is a reward in every living thing.' " Fiqh-us-Sunnah, Volume 3, Number 104.

Hadith - Bukhari 4:538, Narrated Abu Huraira ranhu 1 - Touching a dog
Allah's Apostle saawslong 1 - Touching a dog said, "A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that."

And InshaAllah you'll be rewarded too.

But i don't think there will be anything wrong to take extra precaution in purifying oneself (following the madhab shafie) after touching a dog.

    Re: Touching a dog

Thank you sis syilla, But you miss my point. I have no doubt I can take care of the dog or keep it. Purifying oneself following madhab Syafie is clear. Any contact with dog or pig and moisture, the way to clean is 1 time water with earth and 6 times clean water.

My question is a technical one.
If situation is such that the dog licks my hand and before I have the chance to wash as I should and I wash my hand with only water and soap then I scratch my nose or touch my cloths, do I need to perform the taharah of 1+6 on my nose and clothing also?
I mean b4 I have chance to purify as per madhad Syafie, I wash and dry my hand, then I touch door handle to go out, I touch my car key, my steering wheel and all on my way to somewhere I can get earth and water and place to wash the proper way. How about all those that I touch?

Please, has anyone experience tis before?

I think you have to ask scholar on this... you can try al-ahkam.net.

    (oops sorry wrong edited)

Just bare in mind that islam is easy and not to troublesome ourselves.

    aljawab ibu,

    1. Jika terpegang anjing yg kering memang tak perlu samak.

Ruj: Majmu Fatawa Ibn Taymiyah, 21/530

    Re: Touching a dog

thanks to Syilla for giving Shafi'ite jurisprudence...

From what I've read, Shafiite view about touching a dog is the strictest of all...

But, in Malikite, dog is not ''impure'' (najis), even its saliva is considered as not a "najis"..

In Hanafite and some Hanbalite, dog is not a "najis" but the saliva is considered as "najis"...

I personally believe that the Hanafite views is the best...when it comes to touching the dog.

Furthermore, touching a dog is not a sin, but keeping one inside your house is prohibited, some says Makruh (Dislikeable)...

P/S: I dont follow one madhhab only, because I believe all Madhhab (Shafiite, Malikite, Hanbalite, Hanafite, Zahirite) and including Salafite as truthful....as all rules are taken from the Koran and Sunnah...

    Re: Touching a dog

Sis i think it will depend on which Math'hab you follow. I follow Hanafi. For us if the dog licks you, ie. the saliva touches you. that place is naa-paak. If the dog licks your hand, your hand dries then you touch the keys etc, i am not 100% sure on this but it is what i do to the best of my knowledge, then that place will not become naa-paak. But your hand will remain naa-paak until it is washed. However if your hand is still wet with the saliva and you touch other objects whereas they too become wet then those objects will become naa-paak.

    ashley66
If my hand is moist when I touch the dog or if the dog lick my hand etc I have to wash with 1 x water mixed with earth and 6 x with clean water.
This is the frst time i hear about earth, or rather second as someone mentioned here not so long ago.
I wash 3 times with water and soap, thats all. (wash, rinse; wash, rinse; wash, rinse)

    Assalamu Alaikum

I think ghusl applies only for certain types of naa-paakness. Mayby Math'hab again has to do with it. I know a bath is not needed if a dogs saliva touches a certain spot, that spot has to be washed. (Hanafi) For Shafi's the entire dog is naa-paak. Correct me if i'm wrong.

    Re: Touching a dog

Thank you sis Syilla for all the links, it is very interesting to learn about the view of the other imams. I never knew that Imam Nawawi consider you don't need to samak if you touch a pig.

I agree with north_malaysian, we don't need to stick to one madhab provided we know and learn about other madhab as well. just like we taklik to madhab Hanafi or Maliki when it comes to wudhu' when performing hajj. MasyaAllah how beautiful Islam is.
MasyaAllah, the different opinion by the madhabs or khilaf actually provide many ways to settle even my small issue.

Logically if my dog lick my hand and even if I wash with only soap and water, the item ie. saliva is not there anymore , thus, I still need to samak my hand. But when it come to touching other object, although I haven't purified in the proper way, it doesn't make my hand equal to najas as a dog's paw.

Thank you for your advice, I learnt a lot about najas and I learn a lot more about the view of other madhab.

One inetersting subject I realise, is many advice says it is not permissible for muslim to keep pet dogs. My knowledge is shallow, but I never come across, that it is haraam to keep a dog as a pet. Is it? I agree we should not for obvious reason but is it haraam?
Just bare in mind that islam is easy and not to troublesome ourselves.
Yup, I keep that in mind all the time when I face puzzling question like this. Thank you Syilla, Sabeeha, north_malaysian and everybody for all responses and advise.
