The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, on top of the supposed (temporary) tomb of Jesus. This church is always the site of fights between different Christian denominations, and even the key to the door is kept with one muslim (and therefore neutral family), with the actual job of opening the door the duty of another muslim family.
Thanks. No standard look. Just has to be domed. No idols, pictures of any sort inside.

BTW - The first picture looks ace.

I like this thread :)

St Pauls, for centuries one of the greatest churches on Christendom.

Though perhaps not as impressive as the previous St Pauls - which was one third taller, the tallest building in the world, and along with old London Bridge made London one of the wonders of the medieaval world:

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

This Mosque since it started construction in 1996 underwent many many redesigns and ended up costing 10 times the original price. Tourists are allowed in with tour guides and also get the chance to learn more about islam and islamic architecture

These amazing pictures taken by Osama, who happens to be an enviromental engineer with a very good eye !

Thankyou :D

The Pole is called ''Nishan Sahib' - Nishan - Sign/Target It a double edged sword. (Sikhs are a Martial race) it's symbolic of being Saintly/Soldier.

Bit like Crest for Muslims Cross for Christians Megan David for Jews.

True It's easy these days. Hundreds of Gurdwaras are located there. They run a tour service. I'm going to plan it with my family and mates in a year or two. It'll be so nice! All Gurdwaras are preserved as they were before the partion. :statisfie

Penang Snake Temple is one of Taoist Places for Worship. The story goes to tell you that the snake enters the temple after the temple is built. I wonder how it was named before the snake got there.

On the sixth day of Chinese New Year, we drove to Bayan Lepas, where Chor Soo Kong Temple is situated.
The Temple of Azure Cloud or Chor Soo Kong Temple, must be then when there is not much development that this name was given. Supposedly this location in Bayan Lepas has the most peaceful and tranquil cloud and jungle wriggling snakes.
I hardly go to the Penang Snake Temple as I am not all together friends of snakes. Story of Chor Soo Kong

As it is also the birthday of Chor Soo Kong, we wanted to see whether there were lots of snakes. I remembered hearing about the snakes. They seem to find their way to the Penang Snake Temple as they know it is their big day.

Chor Soo Kong Temple, Temple of the Azure Clouds in Bayan Lepas Penang

That much I know and Dad told us when we were young, about a monk from China.
This monk carried the statue of Chor Soo Kong to Penang, all the way from China. Same time he brought with him the miracles stories and healing powers of the Great Chor Soo Kong.

British Resident, David Brown

Orang Puteh, British resident and owner of Glugor Estate was cured of a sickness in 1873.

on duty performing their divine role of service
The British Resident David Brown donated a piece of land so that a temple was built in homage of Chor Soo Kong who healed him and so named it Penang Snake Temple.

Three dimensional sculptures on the roof

What I truly like about this temple is the three dimensional on the roof.
It is worth the trip of going up to Bayan Lepas to pray, see the roof and the snake farm.
Then you get to see a 600 year old Manchurian Bell in the main hall of the Penang Snake temple.

Three dimensional Sculptures on the roof

I was told, it will be rung on the 1st and 15th of every month following the Chinese calendar.
The Green Vipers

After the Penang Snake Temple was built, understandably (using my modern mind) snakes from the forest appeared in the temple. Being kind, the monk gave shelter to the snakes and since then, it became their home.

Mostly, little green vipers, sleeping away. But don't for a moment think you can steal a touch. Better be gentle.
There are not much snakes now. I guess development around the area has disturbed the natural habitat of the snakes.

The few snakes I can see appear to be motionless, maybe dizzy "pening" from the smoke.
Mostly, little green vipers, sleeping away. But don't for a moment think you can steal a touch.
Better be gentle. Handle them with care. They look docile but in the hearts of heart, vipers are venomous and aggressive
One will coil the snake round your body or where ever you want while the other snap away.
You get to see a collection of some snaps he has taken displayed.

Other things to see

A new wing at the back of the original temple houses Kuan Yin, of Mercy. There is chanting of the sutras at 5am daily if you are interested.

Visitor with a snake round his neck.

A snake farm with more then 50 species snakes.
You get to see local snakes like vipers, king cobras, pythons, tree snakes, racers, kraits, water snakes, cat’s-eye, paradise tree snakes and the rare albino cobra.
Taking Pictures with Mr. Long (Snakes) ha ha
In the main hall, two guys were busy putting taking snaps of visitors
The farm is open daily from 9am to 5.30pm.
Admission is RM5 for adults and RM1 for children aged 12 and below.

thanks for all the pix and info. i know there is a buddhist temple in thailand that keeps vipers, and i think some hindus worship a snake god.
as for the above, most snakes, if they are well fed, spend a great deal of their time sleeping so they probably do not drug them.
the snake farm part sounds cool!
i love snakes, but i must say i do not worship them! :giggling:

.
It`s the main entrance to the Hui Culture Park, on the suburbs of Yinchuan city, not far from the Najiahu village. It shows how far are the aspirations of modern Hui elites from the "old" Hui culture. In fact this building has little to do with traditional Hui-ness.

.

.
The theme park, which covers 20 ha of land, is intended to showcase the Muslim lifestyle of the Hui ethnic group numbering more than two million people in Ningxia. The park contains a museum of Hui culture, a hall for 'Hui rituals', and miniatures of famous mosques in China.
China's largest park to display traditional culture and customs of Hui ethnic group is located in Yinchuan, the capital city of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It took three years and cost 80 million yuan (US$9.9 million) to build the park.
Work on the park's main structures, in a Muslim style, has been completed.
The museum, the first with a history of Hui ethnic group as the theme, will display 500 exhibits of the group's cultural relics. Ningxia has 2.06 million people of Hui nationality, making up a quarter of the national total.

the Shah Jahan Mosque, Woking - the oldest purpose built mosque in the UK (from 1889.)

The chapel at Royal Holloway College, where I used to work.

Interestingly, Royal Holloway was created as a non religious college (most colleges in those days were run by either the Church of England, the Catholic church or the Scottish Kirk). Amongst the figures it has depicted on the outside of the college it has religious figures, including Jesus, Buddha, Confucious...and Mohamet.

Since this thread in vites pictures of holy places from other religions too, may I post pictures from a recently discovered cave, which archeologists believe may have been a place for meeting and worshipping for the very early Christians.
A cave in Rihad, Jordan, dating from 33 AD to 70 AD:

We spent today in Coventry. One of the things we did was to look at the cathedrals - the old one which was destroyed by German bombers in 1940 and which ruins remain as a memorial; and the new, modern cathedral.

In both places I could feel a great peace and calm.
I am posting some pictures, which I hope will be appropriate in this forum.

The bell tower of the old cathedral

Remaining pieces of the old stain-glass windows, which survived the attack

The old cathedral walls

Modern stain-glass windows in the new cathedral

In the old cathedral ruins, at the place where the altar would have been, has been places a rough cross, made from the charred beams of the old cathedral. A very moving sight ... but for obvious reasons I won't post a picture here.

Peace :)

This is a pic of a mosque and church in downtown Beirut. In Lebanon, it's very common to find a church and a mosque right next to each other. You regularly hear both Christian church bells and the muezzin's call to Muslim prayer at the same time. :)

These are not actually pictures of Holy Places, but I dont know where else to put it. During the time of Easter, in many european catholic countries we have procession of Misterium of Lord's Torment. There are processions of believers wearing clothes from the time Christ in the middle of Europe and it looks quite interesting.

Interesting fact: The Istiqlal mosque was designed by a christian architect after winning a competition

Salam!

I got some pictures from Madinah when i went for umrah last thursday. Masjid Al-Nabawi is getting more and more beautiful each time i visit.(hek, that was 2 years ago my last visit. ^^)

some improvements in the Prophetis Mosque since my last visit. Giant mechanical umbrellas which look like minars when closed but when opened it looks like giant date trees to shade people when praying outside the Masjid.

portion of the Prophet's Mosque showing one of its minarat...hehe i cant get photo of the whole on my mobile

this mountain in Madinah(sry i 4got what its named sry) they say the Prophet(pbuh) and his army fight their enemies on this mountain. On this mountain the Prophet(pbuh) told his people not to take properties of the dead. Because during this battle, some people take the properties and jewelries of the slain soldiers.

It is more beautiful inside the mosque but i kept my mobile in pocket because i feel its not good to take photo inside the mosque in respect to its holiness. though a lot of people take pictures inside.

The Shiekh Zayed mosque, the largest in the UAE and the eighth largest in the world. It can accomodate 40,000. It has the tomb of Sheikh Zayed in. Beautiful. I'm sure you'll agree.

Church of the Beatitudes, where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. A beautiful Roman Catholic church, it's also the building in my avatar. It's right next to the Sea of Galilee.

All of the following are beautiful examples from Cairo, in Egypt, Africa. The first, Al Hussein Mosque, is the holiest mosque in Cairo and contains the oldest Quran in the world:

The second, the Hanging Church, is one of the oldest churches in Cairo. It is the most symbollic building for Egypt's millions strong Coptic Christian community. I think I can see why.

This mosque has two qiblats which is the direction of prayer. one facing Mecca and another one facing Jerusalem. Nowadays, people hold their direction as earlier to Mecca not to Jerusalem anymore. Three years ago, when I visited the mosque, I just can see a qiblah there, maybe they had closed another qiblah because it's not functioning anymore.

Interesting.
This Aisha mosque is the place for making niyyah (intention) before wearing the non-stitches white robe for men and a meeqat (marker of time border) of niyyah before entering the holy city Mecca.

There are several places too for niyyah before entering the holy land. And the holy land can't be passed by anyone including Muslims like entering other states, and if I'm not mistaken, I had heard that Muslims in Saudi Arabia too need permission to enter the land. There are also several other do's and don'ts when we enter the holy land.

Candi Bukit Batu Pahat Ruins, Bujang Valley, Kedah, Malaysia (3rd C)

Candis are the ancient places of worship in ancient SEA and ancient India. Some Candis were actually dedicated to god-kings and monks where their cremeted ashes being kept under the gods statues or in a stupa like monument if the person cremated was a Buddhist.

Some brief account of history, the people in the city-state of Kedah (6th C-now) embraced Islam brought by a Yemeni Muslim missionary according to our local chronicles.

The first Sultan there who was previously a Hindu-Buddhist king had ordered the temples in his kingdom being destroyed after embracing Islam with a Muslim name and title Sultan Mozaffar Shah. He was then adopting Islam as the only religion of his country once he embraced Islam around 1136 AD and building a minaret for adzan on the mountain.

Masjid Balai Rong Sri, Kedai Mulong, Kelantan, Malaysia

This traditional architecture mosque was actually a meeting hall of a palace in Kelantan city-state. It was turned into a mosque when the palace servants heard that it was going to be demolished, and there were no mosque in the village of Kedai Mulong. It was very difficult for them to conduct congregational prayer and religious rituals without a proper mosque.

They had collected alms from the villagers around and using it to buy the building and renovated the meeting hall with the addition of Mihrab space and it was completed as a mosque around 1958. The traditional buildings made of woods were easily removed from a place to a place.

When I had any problem in the varsity and feel down or sad, I will go to cry in the mosque, pray, i3tikaf, and reciting quran. So, this mosque is quite memorable for me.

I could see that being true for some faiths, but not for Christians. We are to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, the process of which is declared to be our spiritual worship. I think the devotion we in the church have given to buidlings has become (at least in our modern era) determintal to our living worship of God. Churches have become more places for the establishment of memorials in the name of the dearly departed than places of worship of the living God who sends us forth in his service in the world doing ministry in his name.

if you look at islamic history, the mosques were simple places. for example the first mosque - that of the prophet saws had a mud floor and did not even have a roof for much of its life.

but today, building grand mosques has many benefits eg: attracting people to the mosque who may not otherwise come.

also there is a hadith which says Allaah is beautiful and loves beauty
