Ive got a feeling that this thread is going to be dead, but is there anyone here doing the IB (International Baccalaureate)? i just finsihed it myself and got my IB score yesterday.

I was thinking we could use this thread to get information from each other about the IB and help each other out.

My first contrbution is that Language A and Extended Essay suck! And also that there isnt much fairness between the subjects. What i mean is that a 7 in HL physics and a 7 in, say, Mtahs studies (the easy maths level) are worth the same in the end, even though it is soo much harder to get the 7 in HL physics.

No, unfortunately there is no I.B program at my school, howeverin the school next to mine they do indeed have an I.B program that have a handful of smart students that compete for many different subjects in school. Its from forgeing language to A.P classes. I do not know that much about I.B so can you give me more information of it? I have heard of it its just that I have a very limited knowledge on this kind of program. Not like an honors or A.P program.

Am i right to assume your in the UK? I dont know anything about how it works over there.

Well the IB is basically a course that you do in your last two years of high school. You have to do six subjects plus something called Theory of Knowledge (ToK). Each subject is worth 7 points and ToK together with something called the Extended Essay are worth a max of 3 points. That means you can have a total of 45 points. Any mark 40+ is brilliant, though of course, the higher the better. Also, you have to do three subjects (min) at Higher Level (HL) and the rest at (SL). When you graduate you receive a Diploma.

The IB is a very well known and respected program, and when you graduate youre results are used to get in to a university.

Is that what you wanted to know? I hope that helps. :)

Thanks Brother. I just finished the program a few months ago and am now waiting to find out whether my score was good enough to get me in to optometry as a certain university. InshaAllah, i wish to become an optometrist. I will find out in about a week if i am accepted in to the course.

IB program is offered in my private school,. However; it is a bit different in Canada. In my private school, you need a certain amount average from senior school, grade 8 inorder to get into one only at my private school. Other private school from same board is easier, but in mine it is difficult. You can only take it from Grade 9 in my school. I am in a University level (same as IB) but we do not get same exam, nor same soccer setup, we get percentage at a university level. All courses are University and taught and expectations are at University level. You could say, UNI level is a bit less harsh than IB in my school and in Canada.

^^ isn't that like the french system where kids start specialising from year 8 or 9? I think we have that system here too.. the universities run "foundation schools" which has that sorta setup.

My cousin does IB at her private school [whereas another two of my cousins are doing their HSC]. I think it's only offered to private schools because we were given only brief info on it but no choice as to which one we could do.

I’m doing the IB, my last year, yes Extended Essay is a secret code for ruin their lives before they even enter the exam hall. Another thing I’d also like to complain about is CAS, seriously that is just taking us for a ride, 150 hours worth of volunteering, which I don’t mind but our teacher is in our faces every week. Its patronizing….Apart from that it is quite enjoyable. I enjoy doing English, although all the text we have studied is supposed to be ‘world literature’ which it isn’t, Its Eastern Europe and Africa. Yes the world is really that tiny!

Theory of Knowledge is fun though, you argue about everything and. The more you ramble, the better grade you get.

It’s strange how you need a ridiculous score to get a level 7 in the IB though.

So sister, any cheating tips *cough* I mean non-cheating tips :p

I wanted to do optometry, its 5 years right?

Silver pearl!!! youre doing IB? :D I agree, extended essay as a nightmare! And CAS was just lame, tok was fun true, but the actual essay we had to write was such a hassle!

lol at the world lit, it was exaclty the same with us, europe and africa..

i cant think of many tips right now, expect i hope you choose your HL subjects wisely! also, like what lolwater said, do as many past exam papers as you can in exam conditions, thats really important!

yep optom is 5 years, it might be different in different unis though

all the best!
