What is Life?

In Islam we know life is a test. A gift given to us by Allah SWT. But what is an actual life? Am I making sense? Lately I've been thinking about life as a noun. what is it? This question was posed tome by a very good friend and it really got me thinking. I started looking at the soul. I thought I'd get other people's ideas on this. All opinions appreciated
