The Two Adhaans for Fajr

From the rejected innovations, which have been introduced in these times, is the calling of the second adhaan for the Morning Prayer before its time by about twenty minutes during Ramadaan.



[7/23] Sixth: At-Tathweeb [2] in the second adhaan for the Morning Prayer, and its call before its time. From the mistakes of the Mu‘adhdhin is that they call only one adhaan for the Morning Prayer, and those who do call two have fell into the following:

[1] Calling the Adhaan before its proper time:
This is a long existing error. Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr al-’Asqalanee had objected to it. He said, “From the rejected innovations, which have been introduced in these times, is the calling of the second adhaan for the Morning Prayer before its time by about twenty minutes during Ramadaan.” He also said, “And this brought them to the point where they did not call the adhaan until after the setting of the sun by degrees to be sure of the time, so they claim!! So they delay the breakfast and hasten the Sahoor, and they oppose the Sunnah. So because of that they have been given little good, and much evil has come upon them. Allaah is the One from Whom aid is sought. [3]

[2] At - Tathweeb in the second Adhaan for the morning Prayer:
And this is another error, for certainly this Tathweeb has only been legislated in the first adhaan, of which comes about twenty minutes before the time of Al-Fajr from the hadeeth of Ibn ’Umar who said, “There was in the first adhaan [for Fajr] after Hayya ’Alaa Salaah: as-salaatu khayran minan-Nawm (prayer is better than sleep) twice.” [4]
And the hadeeth of Abee Mahdhoorah is general, and comprises both adhaans, but the second is not what is intended, because it has been specified in another narration with the wording, “If you call the first adhaan for the Morning Prayer then say, ‘Prayer is better than sleep’.” So his narration is in agreement with the narration of Ibn ’Umar.
As-San’aanee commented on the previous wording saying, “So in this is specification for what is general in the other narrations. Ibn Ruslan said, ‘Ibn Khuzaymah has authenticated this narration.’ He said, ‘The legislation of at-tathweeb is only in the first adhaan for al-Fajr because it is to awaken the one who is sleep, and as for the second adhaan, then it is to announce that the time for prayer has come in, and to call to the Prayer.’ From (Takhreej az-Zarkashee li Ahaadeeth ar-Raafi’ee), and like that in Sunanul-Bayhaqee al-Kubraa on the authority of Aboo Mahdhoorah, ‘That he used to make at-tathweeb in the first adhaan for the Morning Prayer by the Prophet’s order’.”
I say: With that [the statement] As-salaatu khayran minan-nawm (Prayer is better than sleep) is not from that which is announced in the (first) adhaan which is legislated to call the people to prayer, and to pronounce the entering of its time. Rather it is the call which is legislated for the waking of the one who is sleep, and it is like the tasbeehul-akheer, of which the people of these times have become accustomed to, in place of the first adhaan. [5]
This is what al-’Allaamah at-Tahaawee supported. He said, “This is the statement of Abee Haneefah, Abee Yoosuf, and Muhammad, may Allaah have mercy upon them.” [6]
So from what has preceded it becomes clear that the Tathweeb in the second adhaan is an innovation, in opposition to the Sunnah, and this opposition increases when leaving off the first adhaan all together, and making the Tathweeb in the second. So what is more appropriate for then is the statement of Allaah,
Will you trade that which is better for that which is worse.

[2] Saying: Hayya ’Alas-Salaah (Prayer is better than sleep). What is meant here is the Mu‘adhdhin’s statement “Prayer is better than sleep,” twice in the second adhaan for al-Fajr. Ibnul-Mandhoor says in Lisaanul-’Arab, “It is said that this du’aa is called ‘tathweeb’ from the verb thaaba, yathoobu. It is referring back to the command of hastening to prayer with an initiative. So if the Mu‘adhdhin says: ‘Hayya ’alas-Salaah’ (hasten to Prayer), then he has called them to Prayer. Then if he says after that: ‘as-Salaatu Khayran minan-nawm’ (Prayer is better than sleep) then he has come with what is an imitative (to hasten to the Prayer). And in the hadeeth of Bilaal he says, “The Prophet commanded me not to make the tathweeb (repeating) for any prayer but the prayer for Fajr”, and it is his statement, ‘as-Salaatu khayran minan-nawm’ (Prayer is better than sleep). It is also said that the tathweeb in the Fajr Prayer is when the caller to Prayer says, ‘as-salaatu khayran minan-nawm…”
