Ok ladies (and gentlemen), I need your help. I have yet to convert but inshaAllah I will very shortly (things keep getting stalled - long story). I am currently trying to contact the imam at one of the largest masjids in the city.

I have just realized that I have nothign to cover my head for the times that I will go to the masjid. I have some shawl/scarves but I do not know if it will cover things well enough.

I wanted to know if people could give me the average measurements of their hijabs/scarves they use to cover their heads. I just want to check and see if what I have will make do for the moment or if I need to go drive myself crazy with hijab shopping (I can be a shopaholic, I love accessories!!).

I hope this makes sense. Thank you for your time.

MashaAllah sis! may Allah keep you upon the right path ameen!

Sis just a normal one that covers your chest along with modest clothes will do. Hijab is something that develops over the years along with your iman, so dont rush. Just make sure you are covering your awrah inshaAllah.

Sis i'm so happy for you subhanallah!

I agree with Nawal, Hijab is something that will develop along with your Iman so I suggest you concentrate on purifying your intentions and lifting your knowledge. Protect your modesty with suitable clothing and ALLAH SWT will look and your intentions in your heart and I pray that ALLAH SWT makes those intention PURE. May ALLAH SWT bless you with the beautiful Deen of Islam and grant you mercy on the day of judgement.

Assalam Alaykum Sister!

I'm sure many of our sisters here would be more beneficial in the Hijab staff than me..
What what I want to say NOW

Hurry up before Ramadan

why?
A muslim counts his life by how many ramadans he lived as a muslim. in Ramadan there is a night which is better than 1000 months..see how much you can get rewarded and forgived when you reach this night (laylat Alqadr) and all your Good deeds in this night will be X more than 1000

Sister! even if we are not approaching ramadan ,Allah said in the Quran:

وَسَارِعُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَغۡفِرَةٍ۬ مِّن رَّبِّڪُمۡ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرۡضُهَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ أُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ
the translation of the meaning :

Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous,― (133) Al-Imran

May Allah bless you and Grant you the COURAGE and the POWER for his sake.

There are several different styles and sizes of hijab out there. I wore square scarves almost exclusively for the first few years, because they're really simple. The normal size is 45x45 inches. I have a few that are smaller, and they don't really provide decent coverage.

If you have slippery hair, I'd look into getting a cotton underscarf as well. A lot of the fabric of scarves will make them slide back quite easily, and they'll hold a lot better against the cotton.

http://www.modestclothes.com/islamic...ijab-pins.html - scroll down to "underscarves" for shops that sell them.

Wow, ok thanks everyone!

The hijab (for the time being) would only be so that I can enter the mosque - I am not yet ready to wear it in everyday life.. I will have my hands full when I tell my family of my conversion (French-Canadian Catholics).

I think I may have to go shopping for some scarves then because the ones I have are pretty long but not wide (maybe 20" wide but about 4 ft long).

And I think I may have slippery hair so I guess I have to get a cotton underscarf. I hope they aren't too hard to find.

Welcome sister!

I noticed you live in Montreal so here are a few Muslim shops were you could find hijabs and underscarves.

If you have long ones, then I think 20 inches would be just about right. You wrap those differently from the square ones. I didn't wear them for the longest time, until I had someone show me how to wrap it. I'm not very coordinated :D

Just got home, tried something out with one of my scarves and it wasn't too bad (to my amazement). It is ok if I use a safety pin under my chin rather than the plastic covered hijab pin for the time being? It doesn't look as nice, but I am not sure I will be able to make it out to a store before I go to the masjid on Sunday.
