Poem 1

On a camels back
fastened arabian horse tack
ingenuous clothing
no time for boasting
apprehension that an unseen force is awaiting
what a complete bedouin
but still meekness better in
naturally veteran
regular visitations to the mountain top
wearing thorn prone flip flops
doubly orphaned
mentally deprived
just got by,fortunate
literary illterate
deep voice said 'Read'
'but i cant read'!
from the aurora
miraclously it was nothing to plethora
so he began to read
and learned the creed
remembring god through prayer and rosery beads
23 years of moral excellence
enjoined islamic jurisprudence
at the battle field led nations
his number one attribute was his patience
a black slave was the first save
womens rights he gave
many men did performe great miracles
but like always at his pinnacle persuaded 1000 mill people not to drink intoxicants...now thats a miracle!

Poem 3

Been alone in life
I've come to you in a strife

Used to look far and wide
Life has taken me on a ride

They all said I was cursed
But I never turned to you as I worsed

When I found you, I was in so much pain
People tried to distract me away, but it was in vain

Now im addicted to you,
Because I know u true

Before wereva I went, it was a dead end
Now you made my life on the mend!

They told me you wouldn’t listen to me, cos I was lazy
Now I've spoken to you, they all call me crazy

They pull me back and I feel like I'm fallin
But everytime I try so hard and come back to you crawlin

Now I just want my soul to betaken
Then I will truly waken

Because I hope, being under Your shade is in my fate
Till that day I work harder for you, because you're Allah the most great!

Poem 4

I seek the guidance, remembrance, and the pleasure
of The Wahid, Al-Ahad; The One that has no measure
I’m lost in a world full of confusion
Hiding away in my seclusion
Thoughts waver back to a painful past
Where sins and transgressions were really vast
Looking back, I was not one to pray
Deviant person, I pray that Allah forgives my ways
I dream of the days when life was so carefree
With a pure heart, had nothing bothering me
Now waking up from that so called delusion
Getting ready for the day I’ll leave this confusion
I want to change my reality for a better one
Don’t want get caught in this so called fun
Doesn’t matter if my life shatters
Like a glass in to a billion pieces and scatters
Cause I know, there’ll be someone to catch my fall
Help me up, and stand with me straight and tall
We’re all together in this community,
And there’s no strength greater, than that of Allah, and Islamic Unity

Poem 5

I sit here, day by day,
pensive, my heart captured by dismay,
I watch the world pass me by,
the howling wind, the rain falling from the sky,
The people I see, the people I hear,
many distant, only a few near.

I think to myself, what if I don't survive?
Where's my dedication; what happened to my strive?
Was I not the one who aimed high; And,
the one who always took a stand?

Again I fear I'm too late,
lost my perception, I fall for the bait,
As a bird that once knew how to fly,
now with broken wings, can only desire for the sky.

Reminiscing now, I try not to grieve,
consoling myself, I strive to perceive,
where I went wrong, how did I behave,
what seems to be pushing me towards that empty grave?

Awaken, I must, before its too late,
patiently, my desires I must sedate,
In between two swings of the pendulum I stand,
the past and the future; how can you fail to understand?

Rectifying the former, the latter falls into place,
regret plus resolve saves even the most wretched from disgrace.
A common destination, followed by two more,
life followed by death, followed by life evermore.

Now I can clearly see, my sights no longer blinded,
I can wait no longer, about my Lord, I've been reminded.
I soon have a meeting, one that I cannot delay,
it's either peace after that, or an eternity of decay.
This much at least, I must remember everyday,
I hear it one more time,: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, except for those astray?" {al-Hijr; 56}

Poem 6

she Shuts the door
she Closes her eyes

She holds back the tears
As she justifies every lie

She remembers the days
He use to cry

he’d never touch a girl
he’d never hurt a fly

she knows his heart
she wiped his tears dry

he would never smoke
it’s the neighbours that lied

My Sons Innocent…
She repeats..
As she continues to cry…

Poem 7

On the front porch she took her seat
Inhaling the cool breeze, she outstretched her feet.

Hoping somebody will come by
To keep her entertained, for only she was counting time.

No sooner than an eyes blink,
A Woman comes by beautified, quite stunningly.

She came to her, greeting with a warm smile,
The women was truly beautiful, although obviously quite senile.

Made up, perfumed and finely dressed,
On her body she wore an alluring diamond set.

Glistering and glittering in the sunshine
Their exquisiteness was making the girl seemingly blind.

Quite besotted by the jewels she was,
She began to devise her evil plot

Whilst with the shine of the jewels her eyes fought,
‘I must, I must make them mine,’ she thought.

‘Don’t do this; don’t get yourself into this mess’
A voice from inside warned, in a tone desperate.

Ignoring it, she pushed it with haste to the back of her mind
For in her a burning desire she began to find.

Determined to get her hands on the forbidden
Weakening was her common sense, and clear vision.

For since she craved what wasn’t hers,
Her sinful and blackened heart was now stirred

And amidst this commotion, appeared to her a handsome young man,
Smiling at her, he extended his trustworthy hand.

“I am a sincere advisor to you,” he began to say
“If you do this, I’m with you every step on the way.”

Listening attentively to his attractive deal
She returned her hand, for what she yearned, would be fulfilled.

And such was the evil pledge she was ready to make,
When again something shook her awake.

With a desperate tone, once again,
“Don’t do this,” it cried, with a tone full of blame.

‘But…’ she began to argue back quite irritated,
If she backed out now, in front of the young man she would be humiliated.

None the less she continued, her hand getting closer to his,
When the voice inside of her began to really persist.

Now worried, she knew something wasn’t right
Suddenly everything became as ambiguous as the cover of night.

Fearing the worst, she slowly withdrew her hand,
For now she felt trapped, as if she was sinking into quick sand

What, between the assurances of the promised deal,
The jewels would have been hers; she would have had her seal.

But amongst all this, deep down she knew she would be the loser
For indeed she knew that a guilty conscious needed no accuser.

A harsh remorse began to set in,
As she grasped the reality from within.

She turned her back away as tears began to well in her eyes
Dropping on one knee, to Allah she began to complain her sighs.

For she knew that it was He that was above all,
Since he sent this to her, then he was certainly in control of all.

Pleading, hoping, crying
Her weapon of Dua, she was furiously excising.

Asking Allah to make her soul upright,
To clear her heart, and hence clear her sight.

And with that she turned away from the women and jewles in much disgust
As she realized that despite with her age and beauty, even she would eventually perish and turn into dust

As for her jewels, she came to know,
That all that glitters was certainly not gold

And as for the handsome man, the ‘Sincere Advisor,’
She too realized that he was nothing less than The Deceitful Liar.

Armed with this knowledge, she pulled out her sword,
It was nothing much, nothing fancy, just the word of Refuge with her Lord

And with that he soon vanished,
and she continued with her day, with a heart newly polished.

Poem 8

Lessons learned before with time do fade
“Nisyan”, that’s how the insane was made

Pains and worry fill his heart and chest
He forgot that it could be a test

He says his life is all messed
He forgot how much he was blessed

So many problems he can’t even stand
He forgot that Allah’s holding out His hand

He says he’s never had any joy
He forgot all the fun he had when he was a boy

I don’t know why I’m getting this punishment he sighed
He forgot all the times he sinned, the many times he lied

Turning back in repentance he cried sincerely
He forgot how great is Allah’s mercy

Poem 9

Numbered are my Dayz
In humility I lower my Gaze
Hoping & Waiting for the Life Ahead
Where Allah in his glory will shed
Mercy upon those who strived
Willingly n voluntarily deprived
Demselves from the pleasures
Taking all the extra measures
To stay on the SiratulMustaqeem
Seeking refuge in Al-Kareem
From the Evil that Surrounds me
Trying 2capture me, won’t let em own me
There is no but or iffing bout it
I know I gotta truthfully Admit
That my youth at times trys to Deceive
Tryna show me, make me Believe
That I’m so young, why worry? Life’s just Begun
It whispers me, As Rasululah (s) reminds me, Prison
Is this Life for you oh Believer Keep on Believing
Your departure date has been confirmed, leaving
You are, oh beautiful believer, don’t let go
One day, you will be laid 2 rest, So Grow
Spiritually let your Imaan flourish
Let the light of the Quraan Nourish
You, Making the path ahead clear
Holding tightly to the Sunnah, I must adhere
For the journey ahead I will prepare
As I slip n Fall I will get back again
Oh Allah send me a mighty Rain
Wash me clean Ya Allah of my Sin
Ya Rab grant me your Forgiveness
The Angels are my only witness
Make me of those whom you saved
From a fire whos flames look so crazed
Keep me guided, Oh my lord Protect my Face
4rm the fire of Jahanam, Dont wanna die in Disgrace
Guide me, Shield me with your mercy, as you take me
Let the shahada be the last word in me.

Poem 10

Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception. (Surah Ale Imran: Verse 185)

What you going to say when the Angel of Death comes knocking on your door?
That I was too busy committing sins early in the morning at four?
Don’t you think it’s going to be too late to seek for forgiveness?
Too busy engrossed in your business, and now you’re helpless,
You had no time to even remember Allah’s name,
Played life as a game and now you’re hanging your head in shame,
Day and night, you continued making wealth,
Not even pondering upon your death,
Never did you think of obeying Allah’s commands,
Coming home everyday with tired hands,
Ramadhan would come and go,
But you never made the most of it and now you’re lying low,
You knew Hajj was fardh on you,
But in Islamic matters, money was always an issue,
You never once gave charity,
All you thought of was saving your money,
You’d often visit the pubs and sip your favourite wine,
Spending your time dining with women you thought were ever so fine,
Whilst your wife would be weeping away with pain and sorrow,
You were never there for her when she was critically ill and needed a pillow,
You want to try pleading with the Angel,
Can’t face Allah in this state, you’re too fearful,
Oh what you’d do,
If you had another year or two,
You missed your salah every day,
Always doing things in your own way,
You know Angels always carry out Allah’s demands,
Never do they act against Allah’s commands,
Face it, death is written for everyone,
Be it father, mother, daughter or son,
This is your last moment,
Soon you’ll be facing your judgment,
No time for tears now,
Not once for Allah did you bow,
You never thought of obeying your parents,
Never thought of giving a present or two to the infants,
Always ignored the call to prayer, the Adhan,
Nor did you take heed from the Quran,
Backbiting and breaking promises all your life,
Always ignoring the words of wisdom from your dear wife,
How many poor workers you underpaid?
Whilst you were too busy having “fun” with a housemaid,
You took pleasure in making money,
Not once did you think of feeding the hungry,
You’ve done enough wrong,
And to Jahannam you belong,
You never showed mercy to the poor,
Always ignoring them when they came knocking on your door,
And now there is no time for you to repent,
Cuz to hell fire you’ll be sent,
Tis true my friend; Jahannam will be your final destination,
And the pious will be the ones in heaven…

May Allah SWT make us amongst the pious and give us all a good death… Ameen

Poem 11

Have you seen the stranger – the unknown one?
That speaks not a word but silently gazes on.
That moves like a shadow escaping the light,
Ignored in the day and unseen by night.

Until the glare of the sun hurts the eyes,
And the shade becomes a refuge for the wise.
Like when the havoc of the world gets too great,
And you want to draw back before it’s too late.

That’s when you become aware of right and wrong,
And the silent companion that was there all along.
You learn to observe without taking part,
And it melts the ice that has hardened your heart.

You witness the damage and it makes you care,
And you feel for those who are still unaware.
Unaware of the pain that they suffer from and inflict,
And the vicious cycle into which they’ve been tricked.

That’s when you want to make them see,
To switch their lens and control destiny.
But how will you withdraw from the hurt that lives on?
Unless you too become an unknown one?

Jazakallah Khayr..I personally feel humbled by the votes..I honestly did not expect more than maybe 2 or at most 3 when I wrote it..I think some of the others were really more deserving of winning, especially the one I voted for - #11. But, Jazakallah Khayr :-[

What would you title it?

I just voted right now - good job I didn't read these last posts! It certainly was difficult to vote, then I looked at the discussion thread to see what crtiteria people were using.

Masha'Allaah, mubaarak to Abu Sayyad! :) I did not expect more than one staff member to participate!

P.S. One thing that made it difficult was the different lengths of the poems... some were powerful but a bit too short compared to others. Maybe next time give a guideline word limit?
