Qaradawi, Shiites in Relations Thaw
By Ali Al-Halawani, IOL Staff
DOHA — An international conference on the occupied holy city of Al-Quds is creating an atmosphere conducive to a thaw in relations between prominent scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi and Shiite scholars and officials.
"Iranian Shiite scholars have not insulted the person of Sheikh Qaradawi," Hojatoleslam Ali Akbar Muhtashami, a senior Shiite authority and a former interior minister, told IslamOnline.net.
He criticized criticism leveled against Sheikh Qaradawi by an Iranian news agency as an agent of Zionism.
"This does not reflect the official stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran," stressed Muhtashami, who was close to Iranian Revolution leader Ayatollah Khuminie.
Mehr News Agency (MNA), an Iranian news agency affiliated to the Islamic Propagation Organization, has led a smear campaign against Sheikh Qaradawi, president of the International Union for Islamic Scholars, as an agent of Zionism.
This came after Al-Qaradawi criticized attempts by some Shiite groups and organizations to spread their teachings in Sunni countries.
Muhtashami stressed that those who link Qaradawi to Zionism are not Shiites but Zionist elements.
He noted that many news agencies that are not officially supervised or controlled by the Iranian state frequently attack Shiite religious symbols, Khuminie and even the person of the twelfth Imam himself.
Imamiyyah, largest Shiite sect, believes in the Imamite of Twelve well-known Imams from among the Prophet’s Household.
The sixth conference on Al-Quds, currently in session in Doha, also witnessed a warm exchange between Qaradawi and Ali Akbar Velayati, a top adviser to Iranian spiritual leader Ali Khamenei.
Velayati, who sat beside Qaradawi during a special reception, extended to him personal greetings from Khamenei and thanked him for hosting the conference in defense of Al-Quds.

Hojatoleslam Muhtashami warned against embroiling the Muslim ummah in the trap of madhhabi (school of thought) disputing.
He confirmed that it is lawful for a Shiite to worship Allah according to any madhhab which he/she thinks is right, be it a Sunni or Shiite school of thought.
The Shiite scholar also confirmed Khamenei's respect for Lady A’ishah, the wife of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), asserting Khamenei refers to her as "mother of the believers".
The wives of Prophet Muhammad are revered by Muslims and are referred to in the Noble Qur'an as mothers of the believers.
Muhtashami says Khamenei's stance on Lady A’ishah, which is criticized by some Shiite hardliners, is similar to that of late Ayatollah Khuminie who had authorized the killing Salman Rushdi over his insult to the Qur'an, Prophet Muhammad and mothers of the believers.
Muhtashimi urged both Sunnis and Shiites to refine their books of narrations and history and take out the weak narrations that smear them.
He cited as a case in point claims that Shiites visit the grave of Abu Lu’lu’ah the Magian who killed `Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Muslim Caliph.
According to Muhtashimi, the grave does not belong to the person who killed `Umar but rather to an Iranian poet named Abu Lu’lu’ who died about two hundred years ago and buried in the said grave.
"It was the British who circulated the rumors that the grave belongs to the killer of `Umar to cause divisions among Muslims in the spirit of the divide-and-rule strategy."
The senior Shiite scholars confirms that the Iranian leadership had ordered the closure of the shrine.
