لسانك لا تذكر به عورة امرئ *** فكلّـك عورات وللناس ألسـن

وعينك إن أبدت إليك معايباً *** فدعها وقل : يا عين للناس أعينُ

Let not your tongue mention the shame of another
For you yourself are covered in shame and all men have tongues.
If your eye falls upon the sins of your brother
Shield them and say: "O my eye! All men have eyes!"

وَلَمّا قَسا قَلبي وَضاقَـت مَذاهِبـي
When My Heart Was Hardened & My Courses Constrained

جَعَلتُ الرَّجا مِنّي لِعَفـوِكَ سُلمـا
I Made My Hope A Stairway To Your Forgiveness

تَعاظَمَنـي ذَنبـي فَلَمّـا قَرَنُـتـهُ
My Sin Burdened Me Heavily, But When I Measured It

بِعَفوِكَ رَبّي كَانَ عَفـوُكَ أَعظَمـا
By Your Forgiveness Lord, Your Forgiveness Was Greater.

The Taabi'ee 'Ataa bin Abee Rabah رحمة الله عليه advised the king of his time Hishâm bin abd al-Malik with the following jewels..





...أتق الله في نفسك
...وأعلم أنك خلقت وحدك
...وتموت وحدك
...وتحشر وحدك
وتحاسب وحدك

Fear Allâh in regards to yourself,
Know that you were created alone...
...And that you will die alone,
Be resurrected alone....

Virtue of Silence


I found my silence to be a transaction so I adhered to it
If I don’t find a profit, then I am not a loser
And silence in men is not but a transaction
And its trader is elevated above every other trader

صَدِيقٌ لَيْسَ يَنْفَعُ يَوْمَ بُؤْسٍ * قَرِيبٌ مِنْ عَدْوٍّ فِي القِيَاسِ
وَمَا يَبْقَى الصَّدِيقُ بِكُلِّ عَصْرٍ * وَلاَ الإِخْوَانُ إِلاَّ لِلتَّآسِي
عَبَرْتُ الدَّهْرَ مُلْتَمِسَاً بِجُهْدِي * أَخَا ثِقَةٍ فَأَلْهَانِي التِمَاسِي
تَنَكَّرَتِ البِلاَدُ وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا * كَأَنَّ أُنَاسَهَا لَيْسُوا بِنَاسِ

A friend who does not benefit at the time of hardships,
Is close to an enemy on the scales,
The friend does not remain, during all times,
Nor does the brother, except for consolation.
I searched the days, with all my strengths
for a brother to trust, but my search was fruitless,
The lands and those who live them were barren,
As though its people were not people [I wanted them to be]

Accompany the best of people wherever you find them
The best of companions are those favourable & nice

I don't know who the author of this incredible piece is, but have a read insha'Allah, it's really good:

ضحكت فقالوا ألا تحتشم = بكيت فقالوا ألا تبتسم
بسمت فقالوا يرائي بـها = عبست فقالوا بدا ما كتم
صمت فقالوا كليل اللسان = نطقت فقالوا كثير الكلم
حلمت فقالوا صنيع الجبان = ولو كان مقتدراً لانتـقم
بسلت فقالوا لطيشٍ به = وما كان مجترئاً لو حكم
يقولون شذ إذا قلت لا = وإمعة حين وافقتهم
فأيقنت أني مهما أرد = رضى الناس لابد أن أذم

I laughed and they said 'Won't you have some shame!'
I cried and they said 'Won't you smile?'

I smiled and they said 'He only shows off!'
I frowned and they said, 'What he hides has come out'

I was silent and they said 'Incoherent'
I spoke and they said 'He talks too much!'

I bore patience and they said 'What a coward
And were he to have power he'd surely punish!'

I was brave and they said 'He strikes with it
And were he to rule, he'd surely be reckless!'

They say 'wierd!' when I disagree
And call me 'opportunistic' when I agree

So I became certain that whenever I wanted to please people,
I am to be criticised.



As they say: رضى الناس غاية لا تدرك - "pleasing people is an objective that can never be attained."

سان و هو يريد ضيرك

"And from misery is that you love, and (the one) who you love, loves other than you,
or that you want good for a person, and he wants to hurt you".

Now this piece is amazing!

The Poem of Ibn Zaydoon

Ibn Zaydoon was a 4th century Andalusian poet. He was what they call رجل عصامي - someone who started life off on a low footing (poor and of low status) but worked their way up in society until he became one of the wuzaraa’ (ministers) and was respected by even the Amir.

Because of this and his ability to compose poetry very well, he was envied by many. The Amir at that time, al-Mustakfee had a daughter named Wallaada who was the attention of all the poets, but she was beginning to show some inclination towards Ibn Zaydoon. His close companions out of jealously turned to plotting against him and lied saying to al-Mustakfee that Ibn Zaydoon was planning to marry Wallaada and take Imarah (i.e. became the Amir).





As a result, al-Mustakfee imprisoned Ibn Zaydoon and below is a breakdown of a poem that he wrote whilst in prison, to his close friend Abu Hafs:




مـا على ظنيَ باسُ يـجرح الدهر وياسو
There is no doubt in my mind
That time wounds and yet cures


ربـما أشرف بالمر ء عـلى الآمال ياسُ


Perhaps it is despair that
Towards hope, a person it lures

Ibn Zaydoon is saying here that sometimes, despair itself pushes a person towards hope just as fear drives a cornered animal to attack & survive.



ولـقد يُنجيك إغفا لٌ ويـرديك احتراس
And indeed obliviousness may save you
And cautiousness destroys you





Looking too much into details and trying to read in to what’s not there may at times be a cause for our destruction whilst innocent obliviousness sometimes saves us from trouble.



والمحـاذير سـهام والمـقاديـر قيـاس


The perils are arrows
But Fate is the bow

No matter how much we try to avoid harm, perils and trouble, at the end of the day they are only arrows fired from the bow of Qadr. “…What has passed you by, was not going to befall you and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by…” [al-Tirmidhi]. In this line of the poem and the ones following, Ibn Zaydoon reflects on his imprisoned state and the ultimate fate he met - he may have held high positions, but it’s an established law that people are raised and lowered, and the Dunya is nothing but a garment of enjoyment that we wear.



وكذا الدهـر إذا مـا عـزَّ ناسٌ ذل نـاس
And surely, that is time
If it exalts one set of people, it only lowers another





نلبَـسُ الدنـيا ولكنْ متـعةٌ ذاك اللـباس
We clothe ourselves with the Dunya
But only an enjoyment! That is its garments






أنـا حيـران ولـلأ مـر وضوح والتباس
I am in a state of confusion


The matter is clear and but yet so murky





Here, he reflects upon what happened - he’s confused because his friends were the cause of his imprisonment, people he trusted proved to be treacherous. Yet the matter is also clear because of their jealousy and confession.



ما ترى في معشر حا لوا عن العهد وخاسوا
What then do you think of such a group


Who turned back on their promise and then betrayed






أذؤبٌ هامت بلحمـي فانتهاشٌ وانتـهـاس
Wolves, roaming and scavenging by my flesh


Ripping with their teeth and biting





He describes them as wolves, eating his flesh - alluding to the backbiting and slander that they took part in. He then says فانتهاشٌ وانتـهـاس - amazing usage of language! ‘Intihaash’ means to bite with the molar teeth whilst ‘intihaas’ means to rip and bite with the front teeth and canines - a picture is formed of wild beasts really digging into their prey (Ibn Zaydoon)



كلهم يسأل عن حـا لي وللذئـب اعتساس
They all seem to ask of me


And wolves only seek to patrol





The treacherous poets constantly ask about Ibn Zaydoon, whether he’ll be out soon or whether they’ve gotten rid of him for good. Ibn Zaydoon likens them to a pack of wolves and he uses the word i’tisaas - wolves that go out at night, patrolling the area, seeking news of further prey.





إنْ قسا الدهر فللمـا ء من الصخر انبجاس
If time proves harsh


Then water in stone will only gush forth





Pressure and hardship are what cause water to suddenly gush from stones, just like the pressures and hardships of life mould a person and cause him/her to flourish.




ولئن أمسيتُ محـبو سـاً فللغيث احتبـاس
If I continue to be a mere prisoner


Then the rain does remain imprisoned





He further consoles his friend (and himself) by saying that imprisonment is virtuous and sometimes only the best are imprisoned (when it’s done wrongly), just like the rain (ghayth) is with-held. Ibn Zaydoon uses the word ‘ghayth’ which is the rain that comes after a very long period, mostly after a drought and harsh seasons.






فتأمل كيف يغشـى مقـلةَ المجدِ النـعاسُ
Contemplate then, how sleep seems to weaken


And cover over the very eye of glory





Indirectly, Ibn Zaydoon calls himself ‘muqla al-majd’ i.e. core of honour and glory, and ’sleep’ in this context is the imprisonment. Hence, the Amir and those responsible for his imprisonment only bring humiliation upon themselves by covering over (imprisoning) the glory of their land (i.e. Ibn Zaydoon)



لا يكن عـهدُك وَرْدَاً إن عـهـدي لك آسُ
Don’t let your trust become a mere flower


Indeed my trust in you is as a myrtle





Very few people proved loyal to Ibn Zaydoon, one of them is Abu Hafs to whom this letter was addressed. He reminds him of the trust of friendship and tells him to strengthen it and make it like a myrtle which is a flower known to last long unlike other flowers.






واغتنم صفوَ الليالـي إنما العيش اختـلاس
Take advantage of the clear nights


Indeed life is only a short instant





By clear nights, Ibn Zaydoon alludes to happiness and clarity of affairs, when people don’t betray and when matters are clear without confusion.




وعسى أن يسمحَ الدهرُ فقـد طال الشـِـماس
Perhaps time will soon permit


For imprisonment has drawn long…

Abu Tayyib al-Mutanabbi:

مَن يَهُن يَسهُل الهَوان عليه *** ما لِجُرح بميتٍ إيلامُ
Whoever accustoms himself to degradation, degradation accustoms to him
Indeed, there is no pain for the corpse when it is wounded

- Here al-Mutanabbi likens the person who is passive to humiliation & degradation (i.e. is weak and does nothing to defend and protect himself etc) to a dead person - a wound does not further harm a corpse just like verbal abuse and humiliation does nothing to such a weak person.

أدعوك ربي كما أمرت تضرعاً*** فإذا رددت يدي فمن ذا يرحم
إن كان لا يرجوك إلا محسن***فمن الذي يرجو المسيء المجرم
مالي إليك وسيلة إلا الرجا*** وجميل عفوك ثم أني مسلم-

-Oh my lord if my sins are great in multitude, then I know your forgiveness is greater
I call on you lord as you have commanded in humility, so if you reject my hand who will have mercy on me?
If only the righteous have hope in you, then in whom should the transgressing criminals hope in?
I have no path to you except hope, and your beautiful forgiveness, and that I am a Muslim.

مع أهل الطاعة

قال الشافعي رحمه الله

مَا أحَدُ إلا وَلَه مُحبّ ومُبْغِض, فَإنْ كَان لابُدّ مِن ذلك, فلْيَكُنِ المرءُ مَع أهْلِ طَاعَةِ اللهِ عَزّ وجَلّ

With the people of obedience

“There is no-one except that he has a lover and a hater. So if that must be the case, then let a person be with the people of obedience to Allaah, ‘azza wa jall.”

واصْنَع كَماشٍ فوقَ أرضِ الشّوكِ يَحْذَرُ ما يَرَى
لا تَحْقِرَنّ صغيرةً إنّ الجِبالَ منَ الحَصى

Abandon sins - big and small: that is Taqwa...
And be like a person walking one a land of thorns, cautious about what he sees...
Belittle not the small sins,

Indeed mountains are made up of small stones....

One Sided Love

A great calamity is to love,
and not be loved by the one you love.
He'd turn his face away from you,

نظروا فيها فلما علموا * أنها ليست لحي وطنا
جعلوها لجة واتخذوا * صالح الأعمال فيها سفنا

Verily, Allah has intelligent slaves * They abandoned the dunya, and were cautious of its tribulations;

They looked to it, and when they realized * That it is not an abode for those who are truly alive;

They made it a transitory station, and took * Righteous actions as a vehicle.

So he advised me to leave off sinning

And informed me that knowledge is a light

And that the light of Allah is not bestowed upon a sinner

The Poem of Imru-Ul-Quais

MU'ALLAQAT *

Stop, oh my friends, let us pause to weep over the remembrance of my beloved.
Here was her abode on the edge of the sandy desert between Dakhool and Howmal.

The traces of her encampment are not wholly obliterated even now;
For when the Sonth wind blows the sand over them the North wind sweeps it away.

The courtyards and enclosures of the old home have become desolate;
The dung of the wild deer lies there thick as the seeds of pepper.
***
On the morning of our separation it was as if I stood in the gardens of our tribe,
Amid the acacia-shrubs where my eyes were blinded with tears by the smart
from the bursting pods of colocynth.
***
As I lament thus in the place made desolate, my friends stop their camels;
They cry to me "Do not die of grief; bear this sorrow patiently."
***
Nay, the cure of my sorrow must come from gushing tears.
Yet, is there any hope that this desolation can bring me solace ?



This is the 1st part..I dont like the rest of the poem, it seems to be pre-islamic....go figure...Although I havnt really checked to see if it is.

wa nahjū dhaz’zamāni bighayri dhanbin
wa law naţaqaz’zamānu lanā hajānā

labisnā li’l khadāýi maśuĥa đa’anin
fa waylun li’l mughīri idhā atānā

We find fault with the world, while the faults lie in our own selves.
The world is not at fault; except that we are full of flaws.
We make fun of the world for no reason,
But if others spoke about us, we were no better than be mocked at.
A wolf does not eat the flesh of another of its kind,
But we eat the flesh of each other knowingly
We have worn the sheep’s clothing to deceive the people;
But woe unto the wild animal if it strays by us!
We have reduced religion to mere show and formalities.
And thus, we deceive those who look at us

fa inna shamātata’l aádā balā’u
wa lā tarju’s samāĥata min baqīlin
fa mā fi’n nāri li’ž žam’āni mā’u

wa rizquka laysa yunqişuhu’t ta’annī
wa laysa yazīdu fi’r rizqi’l ánā’u
idhā mā kunta dhā qalbin qanūýin
fa anta wa māliku’d dunyā sawā’u

wa man nazalat bi sāĥatihi’l manāyā
fa lā arđun taqīhi wa lā samā’u
wa arđu Allāhi wāsiátun wa lākin
idhā nazal al-qađā đāqa al-fađā’u

daýi’l ayyāma taghduru kulla ĥīnin
wa lā yughnī áni’l mawti’d dawā’u



Let time pass by, and do as it wishes;
Be strong when the decreed is delivered to you.
Wail not for your afflictions in the night
For, worldly miseries are not everlasting

When calamity strikes, face up like a man
And let your traits be that of forgiveness and fidelity
If your flaws are plenty and are manifest
And your wish is that they be concealed

Know, that forgiveness hides every fault
And how many flaws are veiled by generosity!
Neither does agony abide, nor happiness
And neither bad-times nor times of joy and comfort

Never should you seek to humiliate your enemies
Because the desire to disgrace them is in itself a malady
Do not expect forgiveness from a miser,
The parched do not quench their thirst from fire

Your sustenance will not diminish by neglect,
And it will not increase by exertion or by more toil
When you have a heart that is satisfied, content -
You will be like the one who owns the whole world

And those who have entered the sphere of death
The earth cannot hide them nor heavens
Surely, the land of Allāh is vast, but -
When misfortune strikes, the air becomes stifling

Let the world betray and deceive every moment -
No matter what; there is no escape from death.

إلَيكَ إلـهُ الخَلْـق أرْفَــعُ رَغبَتِي *** و‘نْ كُنتُ يَا ذا المَنّ والجُودِ مُجْرِما

‘To You, the Creator, I raise my longing,
And even if I am, O possessor of kindness and generosity, an evildoer, a criminal

ولمَّا قَسَـا قلبي وضَـاقت مَذاهِبي *** جَعَلتُ الرَجـا مِني لِعَفوكَ سَلِمــا
When my heart became constricted and my paths became narrow,
I took my hope in Your pardon and forgiveness as an opening and an escape

تعَاظَمَنـي ذنبـي فلمَّـا قرِنتـُـهُ *** بعَفوكَ ربِّي كَانَ عَـفْوكَ أعْظَمــا
My sins seemed very great to me but when I compared them to Your forgiveness,
I found Your forgiveness to be much greater

فمَا زِلتَ ذا عفو عَن الذنْبِ لَمْ تَزُلْ *** تَـجُـود وتعـفو منةً وتَكَرُّمـــا
You are and still remain the only One who can forgive sins,
You grant and forgive out of Your benevolence and generosity

فلولاكَ لَـمْ يَصْمُـدْ لإبلـيسِ عَابدٌ *** فكَيفَ وقدْ أغْوَى صَفْيَك آدِمـــا
Were it not for You, then a servant could never defy Iblis
And how can that be when he mislead Your friend Adam

فيَاليْتَ شَعْــرِي هَل أصَيرُ لِجنة *** أهنـــا؟ وأمَّـا للسَّعِير فأنْدَمــا
If only I knew! Will I arrive at Paradise that I may take delight
Or at Hellfire, that I may regret?

فللّهِ دَر العَـــارِفُ الـنـدبُ إنَّه *** تَفيض لفرْطِ الوَجْد أجفانُه دَمَّـــا
How capable is Allah! For the one acquainted with lament,
blood almost flows from his eyelids due to the excess of his emotions (lament)

يَقيـمُ إذا مَـا الليلُ مَدَّ ظَلامَــه *** على نَفسِهِ مِن شدَّةِ الخَوفِ مَأتمـا
He stands when the night extends out its darkness
Stands against himself out of extreme fear, sinful

فصِيحاً إذا ما كـانَ في ذكْـرِ رَبِّه *** وفيما سِوَاهُ في الوَرى كان أعْجَمـا
Eloquent when he makes mention of his Lord
And in the mention of others than Him, he is speechless

ويَذكُرُ أيَّامـاً مَضَـتْ مِن شَبَابـه *** وما كان فيها بالجَهَـالة أجْرَمـــا
He remembers days gone by of his youth
And what was in it of ignorance, he was a criminal

فصَارَ قَرينُ الهمِّ طُولَ نهَـــارِه *** أخا السَّهدِ والنجوى إذا الليل أظلمـا
And so for the whole of his day, the companion of grief has become
the brother of sleeplessness and secret conversation when the night darkens

يقول: حَبيبي أنـتَ سُؤلِي وبَغيتي *** كفى بكَ للرَّاجـيـنَ سُؤلاً ومغنمـا
He says, ‘My beloved, You are what I request and desire
You are enough of a longing and benefit for those who have hope

ألـسْتَ الذي غذيْتني وهَــدَيْتني *** ولا زلتَ مَنـَّانـا عليّ ومُنعِـمــا
Are You not the One who has provided for me and guided me
And You have not ceased being gracious to me and full of favours

عسَى مَنْ لَـهُ الإحْسَانَ يَغفِرُ زَلتِي *** ويَسْترُ أوْزارِي ومـا قـدْ تقدَّمــا
Perhaps the Beneficent One will forgive my mistakes
And cover up my crime and what has gone forth

تعاظمَني ذنبـي فأقبلتُ خاشِعــاً *** وَلوْلا الرِّضَـا ما كنتُ يَاربِّ مُنعَمـا
My sins seemed very great to me, so I turned (to You) in humility
Were it not for my contentment in you, I wouldn’t, O my Lord, have seen any comfort at all

فإنْ تعْفُ عَني تعْفُ عَـنْ مُتمَرِّد *** ظلوم غشــوم لا يَـزايَـلَ مأتمـا
So if You forgive me, You would have forgiven a sinner,
A rebellious, oppressive tyrant still sinning

فإن تنتـقـِمْ مِني فلستُ بآيـسٍ *** ولو أدخلوا نفسي بجـُـرْم جَهَنَّمـا
So if You were to seek revenge from me, I would not despair
Even if they entered my soul into Jahannum, due to the sins

فجُرْمِي عَظيم مِن قديم وحـَـادِث *** وعفوكَ يَأتي العَبْـدَ أعْلى وأجْسَمــا
For my crimes are great, past and present
But Your forgiveness comes to the servant, more exalted and more great

حوالي َّ فضلُ الله مِن كلِّ جَانِـب *** ونورٌ مِن الرَّحمـَن يُفترش السَّمــا
The bounty of Allaah surrounds me from all sides
And Light from the Most Merciful has spread in the sky

وفي القلبِ إشراقُ المحب بوَصْلِه *** إذا قارب البُـشرَى وجَازَ إلى الحمى
And in the heart is the radiance of the beloved when he is reunited
And when glad tidings draw close, it becomes feverish

حوالي إينــاس مِن الله وَحْـدَه *** يُطالعَني فِي ظلـمـةِ القبرأنجَمــا
Exhilaration surrounds me, only for Allaah
It overlooks me in the darkness of the grave, apparent and clear

أصُونُ وَدادي أن يُدنّسـه الهَوَى *** وأحفظُ عـَهْدِ الـحُبِّ أن يَتثلمــا
I protect my love, lest my desires should pollute it
And I preserve the contract of love, lest it be defiled

ففي يَقظتِي شَوْقٌ وفي غَفوَتِي منى *** تلاحـِقُ خُـطوَى نـشوَةً وترنمـا
In my wakefulness is yearning and in my slumber is destiny
That’s pursuing my footsteps in ecstasy

ومَن يَعْتصِمْ بالله يُسَلم مِن الوَرَى *** ومَن يَرْجه هَـيْهَاتُ أنْ يَتندُمـــا
Whoever holds fast to Allaah, he is protected from men
And whoever hopes for Him, then never will he regret

ما في المقام لذي عقلٍ وذي أدبٍ----------من راحة فدع الأوطان واغترب

سافر تجد عوضاً عمن تفارقه----------وانصب فإن لذيذ العيش في النصب

إني رأيت وقوف الماء يفسده----------إن ساح طاب وإن لم يجر لم يطب

والأسد لولا فراق الأرض ما افترست----------والسهم لولا فراق القوس لم يصب

والشمس لو وقفت في الفلك دائمة ً----------لملها الناس من عجم ومن عرب

والتبر كالترب ملقي في أماكنه----------والعود في أرضه نوع من الخطب

فإن تغرب هذا عز مطلبه----------وإن تغرب ذلك عز كالذهب





There is no peace of mind for the one with intellect and sophistication in remaining stationary - so leave homelands and and go to foreign fields,

Travel! You will find a replacement for what you have left. Crash out! The sweetness of life is in crashing out,

I have seen that standing water stagnates, if it flows it nourishes, and if it doesn't run, it doesn't nourish,

If the lion doesn't leave his den he can't hunt, and if the arrow doesn't leave the bow it won't strike,

If the sun stood still in its course then people, Arab and non-Arab, would become bored,

Gold dust is as the earth thrown in its places, and oud is a type of firewood in its ground,

If one travels this, his ambition is honoured. If one travels this, he is honoured like gold.

This is from the poems that used to be hung on the kaabah from pre-Islam? These were the best of the best poems of the time though, speaking in literary terms. I think at the end of the day, poetry is poetry, some of our greatest scholars (from the early generations too) wrote poetry that I would say are only fitting to be posted in the private gender specific rooms. Amazing poetry though nonetheless. Please keep them coming!

تنـامُ عينـكَ والمظـلومُ منتبـهٌ * يدعـو عليـكَ وعيـنُ اللّهِ لم تنـمِ

Never oppress if you are in a position to do so
For oppression, its field only leads to regret

Your eyes may sleep, but the oppressed one is attentive
Cursing against you while the Eyes of Allaah do not sleep

Take taqwa as your provision, for you do not know
When the night darkens, will you live until fajr?

For how many of a youth laughs by morning and evening
And his shrouds have been weaved, and he does not know.

And how many of young ones are expected to live long
But their bodies are made to enter the darkness of the grave.

And how many of a bride have they beautified for her husband
And their souls have been seized on the night of decree.

And how many of a healthy one dies without an illness
And how many of an ill one has lived for a good time

So whoever lives for a thousand and more
He must one day, make his way to his grave

Treat this by realizing that those who achieved(affluence)
did so only by exhausting themselves over long perioids of time,
thus finally accumulating what they sought.

[Treat miserliness by also recognizing] the disdain shown to misers,
and the hatred people have for them-even [hatred] amongst [misers]

O eye! Weep and do not feel disgusted ... Mourning for the chief is thy duty.

What (joy) in life after the loss of the friend! ... And when decoration of the assemblies is in the shrine,
I wish! all of us had met death together ... And all of us had been with that guided person.

This poem was said by Hazrat Ja'far Radhiallahu Ta'aala Anhu just before he was martyred.

يَا حَبّذَا الْجَنّةُ وَاقْتِرَابُهَا
طَيّبَةً وَبَارِدًا شَرَابُهَا
وَالرّومُ رُومٌ قَدْ دَنَا عَذَابُهَا
كَافِرَةٌ بَعِيدَةٌ أَنْسَابُهَا
عَلَيّ إذْ لَاقَيْتُهَا ضِرَابُهَا

How wonderful Paradise is ... I can see it approaching with its sweet and cool drink.
The time for the punishment of the Romans is drawing near ... Those unbelievers are not related to us in blood.
I must fight the Romans whenever I see one of their Warriors.

كَمَا قَدْ رَدّكُمْ فَلّا شَرِيدًا ... بِغَيْظِكُمْ خَزَايَا خَائِبِينَا

Many a woman will ask of our fight
Had she been there she would have seen we were steadfast.
We were steadfast trusting in Him;
We saw nothing equal to God in the hour of our danger.
We have a prophet, a true helper,
By whom we can conquer all men.
We fought an evil disobedient people
Fully prepared in their hostile attack.
When they came at us we struck them blows
Which dispatched the precipitate.
You would have seen us in wide long mail which
Glittered like pools in the plain;
Sharp swords in our hands
By which we quench the spirit of the mischievous.
Like lions at the gap in the trench
Whose tangled jungle protects their lairs.
Our horsemen when they charged night and morning
Looked disdainfully at the enemy as they wore their badges
To help Ahmad and God so that we might be
Sincere slaves of truth,
And that the Meccans might know when they came

That God has no partners,
And that He helps the believers.
Though you killed Sa'd wantonly,
God's decrees are for the best.
He will admit him to goodly gardens
The resting-place of the righteous.
As He repulsed you, runaway fugitives,
Fruitless, disgraced, despite your rage.
Disgraced, you accomplished nothing there
And were all but destroyed
By a tempest which overtook you
So that you were blinded by its force.

O Worshipper of the Two Holy Masjids!
Had you witnessed us in the battlefield
You would have known that, compared to our Jihad,
Your worship is child's play.
For every tear you have shed upon your cheek,
We have shed in its place, blood upon our chests.
You are playing with your worship,
While worshippers offer your worship
Mujahideen offer their blood and person (life).
The smell of nice perfume of is for you,
And our perfume is the dust and dirt (which is more pure),
And it has reached us from the sayings of our Prophet,
The martyr is not dead,
This is a true correct saying, in which there is no lie.
The dust of the people of Allah is never equal,
To a thousand men, whilst the smoke is climbing.
This is the book of Allah between us,
The martyr is not dead - and this is no lie

لا تأمن الموت في طرف و في نَفَسٍ *** و لو تمنعت بالحجّاب والحرس

“Do not feel safe from death neither in a blink nor in a single breath
Even if you were concealed and well-protected by guards


واعلم بأن سِـهَـام الـمَــوتِ قاصِدَة *** لِــكـل مدّرع مـنا و مـتّرس

And know that the arrows of death are aimed
At every shielded and armoured one from amongst us


ترجو النجاة و لم تسلك مسالكها؟ *** إن السفينة لا تجري على اليبس

You hope for salvation, yet you haven’t taken to its path
Indeed, the ship does not sail on dry land."


Upon hearing this, it is said that Haroon al-Rashid fainted and passed out.

‘Ali ibn Abee Taalib (radhi’Allaahu ‘anhu) one day saw his wife Fatimah (radhi’Allaahu ‘anha) using a siwaak to brush her teeth. He constructed the following lines of poetry on the spot!

قد فُزتَ يا عودَ الأَراكِ بثغْرِها
ما خِْفتَ يا عودَ الأراكِ أراكا
ولو كُنْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِ القتالِ قتلتُكَ
ما فازَ منِّي يا سواكُ سواك

You have seized her mouth of ‘uud of al-Araak.
Were you not afraid O ‘uud of al-Araak that I would see you?
Had you been from those who I could fight, I would have killed you.
No one has been able to defeat me O siwaak, except you.


Quick Explanation:
The lines play upon the fact that Ali - may Allah be pleased with him - is jealous that this Siwaak has access to his wife's mouth - may Allah be pleased with her. In a sense, the Siwaak is depicted as another man, who Ali - may Allah be pleased with him - would surely kill if he could. But the fact remains that the Siwaak is only a Siwaak - you can't kill a Siwaak! So by being this jealous from the Siwaak for merely being in mouth of his wife, Ali - may Allah be pleased with both of them - is raising the status of the his wife's mouth to something very precious, very elevated, and more importantly, very beloved to him. If her mouth is that precious, how precious do you think "his wife" is to him? See where the flirting comes in? :)
This sort of flirtation attained by raising the status of the beloved through jealousy is not a new thing exclusive to Ali - may Allah be pleased with him. Many Arab poets did the same. I recall hearing a line in which the poet was jealous from the gentle breeze touching the skin of his beloved.

It is said that Maalik ibn Dinaar (rahimahullaah) once went to the graveyards and said:

أتيتُ القبور فناديتها *** أين المعَظَّمُ و أين المُحْتَقِرُ
و أين المُلَبِّى إذا ما دَعا *** و أين العَزِيز إذا ما افتَخِرُ
و أين المُدَلّ بِسُلْطَانِه *** و أين القوِِّىُّ أذا ما قدَرُ

“I approached the graves and called out to it
‘Where is the exalted one and where is the debased?

Where is the caller when he did call out
And where is the powerful when he did boast

Where is the one who was arrogant in his reign
And where is the strong one when he did gain power?’

فسمع صوتاً يقول له

تفَانوا جَمِيعاً فما مُخْبر *** و مَاتوا جَميعاً و ماتَ الخبرُ
تروح و تغدو بنات الثرى *** فَتَمْحُو مَحاسِنَ تلك الصُوَر
فيا سائِلى عن أناسٍ قد مَضَوا *** أمَّا لك فِيما تَرى مُعْتَبِر

So he heard a voice say:

All have fleeted, so there is no informer
And all have died and so did the news

The daughters of the rich come and go
So they wipe away the beauty of such a picture

So O questioner of a people who have gone by
Is there not in what you see, a lesson indeed?

فَأَجَابَهُ بِقَوْلِهِ :
الدَّارُ جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ إنْ عَمِلْت بِمَا يُرْضِي الْإِلَهَ وَإِنْ خَالَفْت فَالنَّـارُ
هُمَا مَحَلَّانِ مَا لِلنَّاسِ غَيْرُهُمَـا فَانـْظُرْ لِنَفْسِك مَاذَا أَنْتَ مُخْتَارُ

A man wrote to Saalih ibn ‘Abd al-Quddoos:
Death is a door that everyone is passing through
O if only I knew! What homes lies there after the door
So he replied to him saying:
The Home is Everlasting Paradise if you’ve done that which pleases Allaah
And if other than that, then it is Hell-fire
They are two places, people have none other than them
So look for yourself, which one will you choose?

It is said that Imām Shāfiýī was asked a question and he was silent for a long time. He was asked again whether he would answer it or not. He replied, ‘I am yet to decide what is better: to answer or to keep quiet’.

mā ana ádimu’l jawābi walākin

Lovely thread, too bad I found this thread later after I had done my A'Level Arabic in my country, I had problem and slept when answering poetry questions because I have no reference at that time concerning Arabic poetry. Alhamdulillah I passed the paper although learning High Arabic for only seven months. Now I wanted to memorize all of these poetry, Insya-Allah I can see that they are very useful, not merely beautiful words.

'Qasidah Nuniyyah' (on the Description of Jannah) Recited by Abdul Aziz Al-Matrafy. Qasidah Nuniyyah being the Arabic for, 'A Poem, all the verses of which end with the letter Nun. Trays of gold and cups will be passed round them, (there will be) therein all that the one's inner-selves could desire, all that the eyes could delight in, and you will abide therein forever. This is the Paradise which you have been made to inherit because of your deeds which you used to do (in the life of the world). Therein for you will be fruits in plenty, of which you will eat (as you desire). (Al-Quran, 43: 71-73) Abu Hurairah Narrates that the Prophet said, Almighty Allah says, 'I have prepared for my pious servants that which no eye has seen and no ear has heard and neither has the thought occurred in any persons' heart, so recite if you wish'. 'No soul knows what pleasures are hidden for him' (Al-Qur'an, 32: 17)





I wanted to ask if anyone got the full english translaton to this poem because it sounds awesome,and whats the importance of having "Nun" at the end of the line?

What do you think of the poem? :-[

A poem of hassan bin thaabit radhiallahu anhu after the killing of ka'b ibn ashraf and sallaam ibn abul huqayq.


لِلّهِ دَرّ عِصَابَةٍ لَاقَيْتهمْ ... يَا ابْنَ الْحُقَيْقِ وَأَنْتَ يَا ابْنَ الْأَشْرَفِ
يَسْرُونَ بِالْبِيضِ الْخِفَافِ إلَيْكُمْ ... مَرَحًا كَأُسْدٍ فِي عَرِينٍ مُغْرِفِ
حَتّى أَتَوْكُمْ فِي مَحِلّ بِلَادِكُمْ ... فَسَقَوْكُمْ حَتْفًا بِبِيضٍ ذُفّفِ
مُسْتَنْصِرِينَ لِنَصْرِ دِينِ نَبِيّهِمْ ... مُسْتَصْغَرِينَ لِكُلّ أَمْرٍ مُجْحِفِ

What a fine band you met, O Ibnu'l-Huqayq,
And you too, Ibnu'l-Ashraf,
Travelling by night with their light swords
Bold as lions in their jungle lair
Until they came to you in your quarter
And made you taste death with their deadly swords,
Seeking victory for the religion of their prophet
Counting their lives and wealth as nothing

ولما قسـا قلبي وضـاقت مذاهبي....جعلت الرجـاء مني لعفوك سلمــا
When my heart hardened and my ways narrowed
My hope of your forgiveness towards You was my approach

تعاظمني ذنبـي فلمـا قرنتــه.........بعفوك ربي كان عـفوك أعظمــا
I greatened my sin, yet when I compare it with your forgiveness
My Lord your forgiveness was greater

فما زلتَ ذا عفو عن الذنب لم تزل......تـجـود وتعـفو منة وتكرمـــا
Yet, You forgive sins and still
Generously and gracefully bestow and forgive

فلولاك لـم يصمـد لإبلـيس عابد.........فكيف وقد أغوى صفيك أدما
Were it not for You, no worshipper would withstand Satan
How and he already has lured your chosen Adam

فيا ليت شعــري هل أصير لجنة.........أهنـــا؟ وأمـا للسعير فأندما
Alas! Would I be lead to paradise then I am a fortunate
Or a remorse to hell I am lead

فإن تنتـقـم مني فلست بآسي........ولو أدخلت روحي بجــرم جهنمـا
Indeed not despaired if You avenged me
Or into the core of hell You brought my soul


فإن تعف عني تعف عـن متمرد....ظلوم غشــوم قاسي القلب مجرما
And if You forgive me, a mutinous You forgive…
A wrongful unfair pitiless criminal…


ويذكر أيام مضت من شبابه...........وما كان فيها بالجهالة أجرما
He remembers the past youth days
And what crimes of ignorance were committed

يقيم إذا ما الليل مد ضلامه........على نفسه من شدة الخوف مأتما
Then, when the dark spread out
Fearfully he mourns himself

يقول حبيبي أنت سؤلي وغايتي.....كفى بك للراجين سؤلا و مغنما
Saying my beloved You are my request and wish
Sufficient You are for the hopeful to ask and gain

ألست الذي غذيتني و هديتني...........ولازلت منانا علي ومنعما
Were not You who fed me and guided me?
And still, You give me generously and bless me

عسى من له الإحسان يغفر زلتي......ويستر أوزاري وما قد تقدما
May You, to Whom my charity belongs, forgive me my faults,
Pardon my sins and what came before.

There wasn't any translation, I hope mine is ok

لن يبلغ العِلمَ جميعاً أحدٌ *** لا ولو حاولهُ ألف سنه
إنما العلمُ عميق بحرُهُ *** فخذوا من كل شيئٍ أحسنه

No one will obtain all of knowledge
Even if they tried a thousand years
Knowledge is deep like the ocean
So take from everything the best (of it)

Abu Tayyib al-Mutanabbi:

مَن يَهُن يَسهُل الهَوان عليه *** ما لِجُرح بميتٍ إيلامُ

Whoever accustoms himself to degradation, degradation accustoms to him
Indeed, there is no pain for the corpse when it is wounded

- Here al-Mutanabbi likens the person who is passive to humiliation & degradation (i.e. is weak and does nothing to defend and protect himself etc) to a dead person - a wound does not further harm a corpse just like verbal abuse and humiliation does nothing to such a weak person.

إذا شئت أن تحيا غنيا فلا تكن *** على حالةٍ إلا رضيت بدونها

If you wish to live richly then do not- get used to something but that you can live without it

And this one was by Abu Bakr, I'm not really sure if he said this at the time of the Prophet's illness or if the beloved was someone else. Maybe some one can clarify.

مرض الحبيب فعدته *** فمرضت من حذري عليه
فأتى الحبيب يعودني *** فبرئت من نظري إليه

My beloved was ill, so visited him- and fearing for his sake i became ill
so my beloved came to visit me- and looking at him healed me (?)

as time disciplines me- it shows me what i lack in brains (reasoning)
and if i don't increase in knowledge- [time] continues to teach me through my ignorance (?)

يا رب إن عظمت ذنوبي كثرة*** فلقد علمت بأن عفوك أعظم
أدعوك ربي كما أمرت تضرعاً*** فإذا رددت يدي فمن ذا يرحم
إن كان لا يرجوك إلا محسن***فمن الذي يرجو المسيء المجرم
مالي إليك وسيلة إلا الرجا*** وجميل عفوك ثم أني مسلم-

-Oh my lord if my sins are great in multitude, then I know your forgiveness is greater
I call on you lord as you have commanded in humility, so if you reject my hand who will have mercy on me?
If only the righteous have hope in you, then in whom should the transgressing criminals hope in?
I have no path to you except hope, and your beautiful forgiveness, and that I am a Muslim.

ذات يوم التقت وردة جميلة رائعة الجمال شذى الرائحة جذابة الألوان

One day, a brilliantly beautiful and fragrant flower with attractive colors met

بلؤلؤة لا يبدو عليها شيئاً من هذه الصفات فهي تعيش في قاع البحار...

... A pearl that lives far in the bottom of the sea and has none of these characteristics.

تعرفا على بعضهما

Both got acquainted with each other.

فقالت الوردة: عائلتنا كبيرة فمنا الورد ومنا الأزهار

The flower said: our family is large; roses and flowers are members of the family

ومن الصنفين أنواع كثيرة لا أستطيع أن أحصيها

And there are many other species that are various and countless.

يتميزون بأشكال كثيرة ولكل منها رائحة مميزة وفجأة علت الوردة مسحة حزن!!

Each has a distinctive scent, appearance …etc. Suddenly, a tinge of distress appeared on the flower.

فسألتها اللؤلؤة: ليس فيما تقولين ما يدعوا إلى الحزن فلماذا أنت كذلك؟!

Nothing accounts for sorrow in your talk; so why are depressed? The pearl asked.

ولكن بني البشر يعاملونا باستهتار فهم يزرعوننا لا حبا لنا ولكن ليتمتعوا بنا

Human beings deal with us carelessly; they slight us. They don't grow us for our sake but to get pleasure from

منظرا جميلا ورائحة شذية ثم يلقوا بنا على قارعة الطريق أو في سلة المهملات

... Our fragrance and beautiful appearance. They throw us on the street or in the garbage can

بعد أن يأخذوا منا أعز ما نملك النضارة والعطر...

... After we are dispossessed of the most valuable properties; brilliance and fragrance.

تنهدت الوردة ثم قالت للؤلؤة : حدثيني عن حياتك وكيف تعيشين؟؟

The flower sighed and then said to the pearl: speak to me about your life! How do you live?

وما شعورك وأنت مدفونة في قاع البحـــار...

How do you feel it? You are buried in the bottom of the sea.

أجابت اللؤلؤة: رغم أني ليس مثل حظك في الألوان الجميلة والروائح العبقة

The pearl answered: Although I have none of your distinctive colors and sweet scents,

إلا أني غالية في نظر البشر فهم يفعلون المستحيل للحصول علي!

... Humans think I am precious. They do the impossible to procure me.

يشدون الرحال ويخوضون البحار ويغوصون في الأعماق ليبحثوا عني

They go on long journeys, dive deep in the seas searching for me.

قد تندهشين عندما أخبرك أنني كلما ابتعدت عن أعين البشر ازددت جمالا ولمعانا ويرتفع تقديرهم لي...

You might be astounded to know that the further I lay, the more beautiful and brilliant I become. That's what upraises my value in their thought.

أعيش في صدفة سميكة وأقبع في ظلمات البحار

I live in a thick shell isolated in the dark seas.

إلا أنني سعيدة بل سعيدة جدا لأنني بعيدة عن الأيدي العابثة وثمني غالي لدى البشر...

However, I'm happy and proud to be in a safe zone far from wanton and mischievous hands and still the humans consider me highly valuable.

أتعلمين من هي الوردة ومن هي اللؤلؤة ؟؟

Do you know what the flower and the pearl symbolize?

وسوف تجدين أنهما

You will find that

الوردة هي المرأة المتبرجة

The flower is the unveiled woman (who shows her charms)

و اللؤلؤة هي المرأة المتحجبة

... And the pearl is the veiled woman (who conceals her beauties
