Love of dunya leads to hate of aakhira, and attatchment to dunya leads to Detattchment of akhirah. And vice versa.

We are told to treat dunya as a traveller would a shade or pit stop on a long journey. We might gather provisions such as water, or some dates, and energy for the long road ahead. But a smart traveller wouldnt grow too fond or attatched to it because he knows he has somewhere to be and somewhere to go.

And as such we should gather the only provisions, that we will be able to carry in our journey, which is good deeds, and alhamdullilah there is no limit to the provision we may carry; as is the case with a traveller whose limit is how much containers he can carry/or how much money he has to spend.

But as to those who grow fond of their pit stop, and love what they find there (a bed that u dont own.. and the fruit tree you gather your food from). They are like those who spend all their time in the worldly affairs of buying the latest cars and most expensive shoes. Ofcourse it is not haram, but it makes about as much sense as the traveller who starts cleaning and shining the furniture in the hotel he is temporarily staying in. And calling it "mine"... He is then told he has come to the end of his stay (ran out of money/time), and due to his love of the hotel, he clings and they call the police and have him dragged out kicking and screaming.

So dear brothers and sisters. Do not be absorbed in clinging to what is not yours, and what is only temporary. Insted, pray that allah make those who use their stay wisely to gather provision and when their time of stay comes to an end, they leave peacefully; as they know that time was coming and they are ready with mountains and mountains of refreshment/light/and transportation for the long journey ahead to their final destination. Inshallah

Great post mashAllah.

Im just wondering...how do we know when we are becoming too attached to the dunya? I mean if we take account of our life right now, how can we say we live and act as travellers in this dunya and not like permanent inhabitants. Where do we cross the line of being materialistic?

How do you guys keep yourself in check ?

Self-evaluation sis. It is one of the most important tools that all muslims should possess, and that the sahabah had.

As we know, we were created on this earth to worship allah. There are many ways of worship (ibadah), and alhamdullilah even our eating and sleeping can be forms of ibadah if we have the right intentions (all actions are evaluated by their intentions). If you go to sleep early in order to wakeup for fajr, that is a form of ibadah and you are rewarded for it. If you take care of your health that allah gave you so that you may stay strong enough to worship allah in other ways that is ibadah...
If however, you try and take care of your health and body so that other people can notice you and like it, that is not ibadah and would more likely be a sin on your account. If you over indulge on food, that is also not ibadah.

So what i'm trying to say is, if you see yourself doing actions for worldly benefit and NOT to please allah or attain jannah, then you are growing too attatched to this world. If you are buying the latest fashions in order to fit in and have other people look up to you and admire you... Which seems to be the prevailing reason anybody does anything these days (even though we fight it and say "no im not doing it to get anybodies attention' but its not true.).

Do self evaluation before EVERY decision you make "why am I doing this? will this get me closer to allah?", and make dua that allah guides you to the right choice for your akhira. And be honest to yourself, don't let shaytan trick you into thinking your doing something for a reason other than the reason you are really doing it for.

As our brother said self-evaluation is important :)
http://www.islamicboard.com/general/...valuation.html

YOU can tell you are attached to this dunya when you are far from Allah When things in this life become more important to you then the pleasure of Allah when you can go out of your way to go to a movie a football game or to do anything we like to do but cant take 5 min to do the salah on time we can well in short when we go out of our what to do unnecessary things that dont help us our benefit us and the things we are here to do we make it sec Allah says And I did not Create the jinn and humans except they should worship Me.[Noble Quran 51:56] you can tell you are in love with this dunya when we exchange our after life for this dunya when what i mean is when we fear death not because of our accountability to Allah but rather we fear to leave this world life.
The Prophet (sas) said: "This life in comparison to the life hereafter is nothing except like that which one of you finds if he sticks his finger into the ocean and then sees what it brings back with it." (Muslim)
"Surely, this dunya is sweet and fresh. And Allah makes you the heirs of it and then watches what you do. So beware of this dunya and beware regarding women." ( Muslim)
"Verily this dunya is cursed and all that is in it is cursed except for the remembrance of Allah and all that goes with it and a scholar or a student." At-Tirmidhi
One of the things from which I fear for you after me is that which will be given to you from the flowers of this dunya and its ornaments." Muslim & Bukhari

Allah swt says
{This has been made beautiful to people: the love of the desires such as women, sons, piled up heaps of gold and silver, branded horses, cattle and land. That is the provision of this life but with Allah is the best place of return.} Aal-'Imraan:14
O people! The promise of Allah is surely true so do not let the life of this world deceive you nor be deceived by the Deceiver.} Faatir:5
And the life of this world is nothing but frivolity and playing while the realm of the hereafter is the true life if they only knew.} Al-'Ankabut:64
