internet must be easy because you have to write down what the letters matches and try to remember the basics before getting onto the hardest bit.

The first thing you need to realize is that learning a new language takes time. You will need to have realistic goal of atleast 1 year of hard work. When I say hardwork I mean you study everyday for atleast 1 hour or 2. Then you should be able to after an year you should be able to understand some arabic. I would recommend Madinah University books 1,2, and 3. Also, a software called "My arabic teacher". Go through both of these programs together. My arabic teacher is good software because you can memorize bunch of essays and read short stories in arabic with word for word translation and the words are read out to you by a native speaker. The software is really good and anyone that wants to learn arabic should really consider buying the software. DO NOT waste your time or money on Rosetta Stone, Teach yourself arabic, and some other cheap softwares. Just stick to Madinah and My arabic teacher. Spend more time on my arabic teacher you should be able to learn a lot of arabic.

If you do not know how to read or write I would recommend Alif Baa arabic book. These three programs should be more then enough to get you started into your quest of learning arabic inshallah.

Madinah Arabic Books for english speakers is the best. Check at your local university. Sometimes they have evening Arabic classes arranged by the Islamic Society. It helps A LOT when you have a teacher going through the book with you.

I went to a Arabic course at mosque last weds but it seemed a bit advanced, words for things etc rather than alphabet first. So I am going to wait till next 3 month course starts there and in meantime I have just started Madhina Arabics website course, its free and broken right down, have just been sounding out alphabet, and mashAllah my kids have been copying me. I think we need to talk also with Arabic speakers but small steps will do it. May Allah improve ourknowledge of Arabic, Ameen.

^ Yeah, but it's not the same as a teacher answering questions you might have or explaining the grammar of something using examples if you don't understand first time.

I use to find and collecting Arabic loan words from my native language when I learned Arabic during my schooling time. The problem is only contextual meaning and grammar. Maybe you can adapt Arabic script in your native language once you grab the way to write it. That'll help your younger generation learning Arabic. For free Arabic lesson, actually you can learn it through Quran. You just need a teacher to teach you Quran and you already at the entrance of knowledges, everything begins from Quran (Words of G-d) : D

A really good way to break into the speaking of Arabic (Egyptian) is to use the Michel Thomas learning method. He makes it easy. It will give you a basic start and you will be confident that you can at least form some basic sentences. You will be surprised how much you can say after just a few hours.

I've studied other languages too, and Michel Thomas is the best for getting started in my opinion.

:sl: Sister Iris

I would highly recommend the following sites.
You start learning from the basics, you learn how to form sentences, verbs grammar etc
There are 3 books in total and the videos cover a class that studies these books.
The books are called Madina arabic books.
The first book is covered with 9 DVD's ( which you can order or download from the sites below)
The second book has 16 DVD's and the 3rd book has 23 DVD's.
It is very detailed.

http://www.lqtoronto.com/
http://www.lqtoronto.com/downloads.html

You can download the DVD's or order them but shipping out of Canada cost quite a bit of money.

http://www.lqtoronto.com/store.html#esa

Alternatively you can watch it on youtube.

The very guick method is to have freindship with an arabic speaking fellow.

Learn to Speak Arabic CDs are also available in market to teach arabic which I found very much helping.

But I will say again, learning arabic is very easy when you creat an arabic speaking environment around you.
