What's happen with this purple spinach ?

Few hours ago my wife bought purple spinach, but when she washed it, this purple spinach turned into dark green, and the water became purple.

What's happen with this purple spinach ?, is this normal or is this painted spinach ?

OOps, sorry, there was a misunderstood beween me and my wife. This purple spinach turned into green when it boiled, not washed.
I am panic because I found some cases, people do something bad with food, i.e soak white rice in tea water and sell it as red rice, or use artificial color for fresh fruit.
