The victim's leg was bitten off above the knee in the tragedy near Port Elizabeth.

The 23-year-old man had been surfing with a friend who brought him to shore following the attack.

Paramedics were alerted and the victim was then airlifted to hospital where he was in a critical condition.

Spokesman for the National Sea Rescue Institute Craig Lambinon said: "He was later declared dead after all efforts to save him were exhausted."

It was not known what species of shark was involved in the incident.

The man was attacked while surfing at the seaside village of Glentana in between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

Let me see, man goes surfing, an activity which is known for inviting shark attacks, in waters known to be infested with sharks, and is surprised to be attacked by a shark.

Do the words "Asking for trouble." seem obvious.

man all these death treads seem to be getting boring now.. not saying that I don't care, but its pretty much everywhere now,

This puts me in mind of the other thread where it was stated that no animal strikes without warning, this case pretty much prooves it untrue, also similar cases featuring crocodiles
