The Treasure Hunt

by Nadia Khan

Every year a visitor comes among us silently
laden with copious Bliss and profuse Mercy
bringing us tears of Fear and Hope
Though he announces that he has unlimited gifts and presents in store for us
that will last both of our lives
but he hides them under the tree of our beings for us to discover
and impels us to start on the spree of "Treasure Hunt"
So we toil, and till the grounds of our existences,
indulge in physical and mental purging of our selves
cry tears of 'Fear and Hope'
Abstain from the worldly desires that make us fall to the ground
Spending each moment of our lives for the pleasure of Someone Up Above
And soon enough, we begin to sense the new aura exuding from our beings
a new light emanating from our hearts
and a new mission taking shape in our minds
We encounter a self which is free from the "Self"
a fertile heart from which gushes forth the fast growing tree of our Iman
a rejuvenated soul which is impregnated with the seeds of 'Fear and Hope'
But just when we are beginning to bathe in the glory of our rejuvenation
our visitor packs up his things and leaves as silently as he had come,
this time leaving us in tears of gloom and desolation,
Our frivolous hearts skip a beat and stop pumping for a second
Who knows if we will get to see him next year?
Who knows if we will be agile enough to go on the Treasure Hunt?
Who knows if we will be able to fast during the day and pray during the night?
But then suddenly a consolation seeps in.
It is fine if we cannot see him next year
We will just spend each day and every night of our remaining lives
hunting for the Pleasure and the Treasure
toiling relentlessly to gain the Favor of Someone Up Above
digging the earths of our beings and selves
While hoping that we get to see Ramadan once again...
