Merits of Learning
By: Raakin Hossain & Rashad Abdullah

As knowledge is obligatory upon all men and women, it is knowledge which keeps one to his standing. A Muslim, for example, will be called a Muslim after he learns the Shahadah and the basic five pillars of Islam. For a Muslim, he is responsible to seek knowledge which he can perform the obligatory actions. Those who look further for knowledge, for them awaits a vast amount of honor and reward.

Learning has no age restrictions. One may learn at any age. Knowledge, however, is only known to the one who possesses it. For example, a jeweler will not understand the joy and merchandise of a grocer, while the grocer will not understand the knowledge behind jewelry. Thus, if an ignorant grocer were to sell his fruits and vegetables, he will undermine the value of the gems of a jeweler because he has no knowledge of it. That is also the difference between the knowledge of this world and the knowledge of the Deen. It is like oil and water. The knowledge of the Deen will always be above that of this world, for water evaporates and oil stains. The effect of knowledge is long lasting. One who learns has low possibility to forget of which he learned.

It is reported in Ibn Maja and Tirmidhi that “verily this world is accursed and accursed is what it contains, except the remembrance of Allah, that which Allah loves, and someone with sacred knowledge or someone learning it.” That emphasizes the piety of those who attain knowledge. Notice that the Hadith refers to “sacred” knowledge, so those who seek knowledge that has no relation with Islam is not part of the exception. As for the knowledge and objects of this world, a poet puts it beautifully to “move away from the world; seek not to wed her. For she is the one who slays her husband. Her favors never match her parts of fear; observe her; more often you will see offense.” Thus is this world and its useless knowledge.

Greetings,

Does anyone really believe that non-Islamic knowledge is completely useless by definition?

bro Rashad: (Ibn Maja and Tirmidhi that “verily this world is accursed and accursed is what it contains...etc")

this is a weak narration, scholars such as Abu Hatim and Dar Qutni have refuted many of it's chains, not to mention it's meaning is not appropriate, Allah created this world and what's in it, how then is it accursed? the prophet never spoke like this.

czgibson:this is the attitude some have unfortunately, religious as well as non religious knowledge are both as useful as the other, there is no indication to the contrary.
but given the state of civilization decline we suffer these days such sentiment is expected..

perhaps he meant knowledge of other religion's and so on?
