I'm in the process of learning tajweed for the Qur'an, but I'm wondering how many of the same rules apply to standard (or classical) Arabic (ie, anything written which is not the Qur'an)? I know some rules like the assimilation of lam do apply, but what about other rules?

Good question. I once read standard Arabic with a bit of tajweed in my Arabic class, and the teacher said that doesn't apply to standard Arabic. You're right about assimilation of sun and moon letters but rules such as ikhfaa, the tarqeeq of ra, qalqalah, and the prolonged madds don't apply in spoken as far as I know.

Hope that helps.

EDIT; sorry meant tafkheem of ra
