^ i think that would be a bit difficult on the sister erm if you buy the battery online and take your computer and the battery to any pc shop they'll replace it they might even do it free of charge it only takes 5 minutes to do.

It seems both the problems are related. In fact, the second one is causing the first. When the date is not properly set, Outlook or any other secure site fails to recognize the security certificate. It either shows as expired or invalid.

The solution for this problem is to change the CMOS battery, as suggested by br. zÂk. You can google "How to replace the CMOS battery" for detailed procedure.

hmmm that's the reason I did not get the notice when I first fixed the date and then checked mail. Today , when I try to check mail first , I get the notice again :(

Abdullahii : take your computer and the battery to any pc shop they'll replace it they might even do it free of charge it only takes 5 minutes to do.

Ok , I have to be a nagging wife now and will make life miserable for my husband till he does something about it. Either do it by himself or take pc to any shop.

cat eyes : ...is it second hand computer?

My computer is 6 years old. Any suggestion how to keep him/her more active ?

It is on the motherboard when you open the pc casing (usually right near the bottom). There is only one battery on the whole board so you can't put it in the wrong place (just be sure to put it the right way around, and turn off the mains before you start poking around in there with a screwdriver :p).

How can i extend my laptop's battery life?

1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work – less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

2. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.

4. Cut down external devices – USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.

7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

8. Take care of your battery – Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)

9. Hibernate not standby – Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.

10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.

11. Set up and optimize your power options – Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).

12. Don’t multitask – Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!

13. Go easy on the PC demands – The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge – pick your priorities wisely.

14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.

15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ – Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.

Turn off the autosave function. MS-Word’s and Excel’s autosave functions are great but because they keep saving regular intervals, they work your hard driver harder than it may have to. If you plan to do this, you may want to turn it back on as the battery runs low. While it saves battery life in the beginning, you will want to make sure your work is saved when your battery dies

Lower the graphics use. You can do this by changing the screen resolution and shutting off fancy graphic drivers. Graphics cards (video cards) use as much or more power today as hard disks

i can help you with that...its simple,

one way of doing it is emptying the charge on the battery fully and then charging it fully that way you program the battery cells to function better and be more efficient...however some battery experts say you dont need to discharge completely to start charging fully they say that at about 30% of charge left you should charge fully.

I would personally say that if you discharge your battery completely and only then you start charging fully if you keep up with this routine you can program your battery to hold more charge.

When it was new, it used to run for a long time but now after having been fully charged it only runs for 15 mins. It's sony vaio vgn-fe21b. How long will it run for if i attempt the above?

sister i think the battery is getting to its end but maybe if you reprogram it that might help

things to do

1. if it has any charge now discharge it until its over finish finito!

2. now that its fully discharged charge it until it becomes full

3. repeat this process and you should see some improvements inshAllah

That used to be the case with the older batteries but its really bad for li-ion batteries. If you continually discharge them completely they start to fail quickly.

It's time for a new battery. When you get the new one, only use it when you need it. If you're plugged into a charger all day then remove the battery. Only put the battery in the laptop when you need to move away from the charger. You can usually remove and replace the battery with the laptop on mains power (saves you having to turn the laptop off and on again).

If i keep it plugged in (which i do) will the battery still die out as in stop functioning one day? The new one costs £77.

i would say keeping it on ac power this wont damage ur lithium battery because these batteries are quite advanced compared to the good old batteries in the past but i would suggest that you do processes 1 to 3 twice monthly just to keep those cells programmed well.

All batteries eventually die out. If you are on a/c power then why not remove it? It takes 2 seconds and it will definitely last longer. This will be due to 1) not being constantly topped up by a/c power and 2) not being constantly exposed to heat - which can get quite high when doing some tasks.

got this mail today about a florida woman and her computer , browse and found the link . Don't know if this is a true story or not.

And you thought YOU had computer problems!!!

TECH SUPPORT 'Hello, technical support, how can I help you?'

LADY: 'Last night my computer started making a lot of hissing noise at me so I shut it down. This morning when I turned it on the computer started hissing and cracking, then started smoking and a bad smell, then nothing.'

SUPPORT: 'I will have a technician come over first thing this morning, just leave the computer just like it is, so they can find the problem and fix it, or change it out with another computer. Give me your address; phone number and the technician will be there just as soon as they can'

When the technician got there, the lady showed the technician where the computer was, told him what happened to it and this is what the technician found wrong.
Take a look at the pictures...!

The technician told her it must have been after the mouse! The woman didn't think it was very funny at all.

or try this: Dont open the file directly.. Open the MS word first and then click File>Open>Open the File

Try checking your task manager to see if it is already running, if so than end it and relaunch word. Rebooting also helps if you had ur pc on forever.

Find out the native resolution of your monitor (I assume its an lcd), and then if you use windows right click on desktop and then properties. Go to the settings tab and there you will find the resolution settings.

Hmm 1024x768 is not particularly high so should be fine. You can try 800x600 if you keep getting the message but it won't be very nice to use. How about the refresh rate in Hz?

No ! No ! don't ! :skeleton:

Realtek is the driver of your sound system, if you delete it => No sound in your PC.
It has nothing to do with Realplayer. You can delete RealPlayer but NOT RealTek.

to reduce the disk space, you can delete temporary (internet) files, cookies, unnecessary files. Anyway, when you click on the "low space message", it will give you the list of temporary (not needed) files you can delete. Then you can delete some software YOU INSTALLED and YOU DON'T NEED.

If after all that the message is still coming, just ignore it. And if you have another disk partition, try to use it.

I don't really know what's the exact use of Max Reader, but if you never used it, you may delete it.
I think Winzip is useful to open compressed files that you may recieve by internet and it helps reduce the size of files by compressing them (may be you're using it without you know). I think you'll want to keep it, unless your disk is critically full.
format_quote Originally Posted by Muslim Woman

That's because when installing a software, if you don't specify the destination of the installation, it will automatically put it in "C:\" ("C:\Program files\Install_directory").
So when installing a new software, you may want to customise the destination install folder in another partition (drive) , for example : "D:\My_Folder".
(Now you can remove some programs and reinstall them in other partitions)
You can also move your files (not programs) like images or videos, from C:\ to other partitions. That will keep the C:\ partition "relaxed" ;D.
hope it helps.

I have a question and I am looking forward to find an answer here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R which is powered by Intel i3 processor which is clocked at 2.13 GHz and I have an old desktop which is powered by Intel Pentium 4 which is clocked at 3.06 GHz. Now the question which comes to my mind all the time is, "Isn't my desktop is faster than my laptop? And if it is, why did I get a slow processor on laptop even though I bought it recently. On the contrary if i3 is faster than Pentium 4, on what basis?"

Please anyone answer.

Thanks in advance.

I would only uninstall Power DVD. Office is usually a very commonly used program, and I don't think you can completely remove Internet Explorer anyway so the most it will do is downgrade.
How big is your c:\ drive? How much is free? What have you installed since last time you posted? Your space seems to go very quickly.

7.81GB is kinda low. Is this how you've partitioned it or is the physical drive that size? Have you considered buying a new hard drive? I don't think they are very expensive. Here in the UK 1TB (1000GB) is about £50. You don't need that much, even 250GB should enough for you.

Next time you format, make c:\ 30GB and d:\ whatever is left. Unless there is a good reason you have so many partitions. Or just make it all into c:\
Net speed is down to your broadband package so upgrading the pc won't make much, if any, difference.

Well you i3 processor has 2 cores so your effective speed is 2.13 + 2.13 = 4.16 and It is not only grater than 3 GHz but since it has two cores it can do better multi-tasking (i.e the two core processors act like a team and share work to make it faster than a single processor of 4 Ghz)

You are using Internet Explorer, right ?

Go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Security Tab. Here select "Internet".

Now select "Custom Level" button.

Here go to Miscellaneous --> display mixed content and select "Enable" option as shown in the below screen shot.

With this done, you will not be prompted anymore.

I was just reading through the old comments and how times have changed. It went down to £60 for about 2TB recently, but since the floods in Thailand hard drive prices have rocketed to like £150 for 2TB. Hope everyone's ok for storage ;)

Use Mozilla Firefox instead. It's faster, more simple, and more secure than IE.

That's very unusual.
Maybe you can uninstall your firefox, then download and install the latest version (firefox 8): http://download.cnet.com/mozilla-firefox/?tag=mncol;3

Hmm I've found the opposite. Chrome is lighter, faster, more stable, and less hassle since it updates itself. I guess everyone has their own preference, so trying each one is the only way to know for sure.

Chrome is from google, which means you can bet everything you are searchiing is being added to your profile they have built of you. Which is why it's better to not have gmail or use chrome or even google if possible. Other email servers like yahoo allow the FBI to look in your inbox for a certain fee but they also delete back up from servers after some time. With google, everything stays in their servers forever. If you are concerned about privacy then open source software, like firefox, is the bet way to go.

Everything you do is being tracked, unless you are using multiple proxies and then it's possible to be tracked.

True, there is no absolute privacy online. But still, some privacy is better than none. Would you rather have blinds on your windows so others can't see in your house or have nothing and say "just don't go in front of the windows"

It is important that you uninstall your current firefox. It might have unnecessary add ons which slow it down. Restart your computer before you downloading/installing the new firefox.
If you install the new firefox without uninstalling the old one first, the new one will only import everything you have on your current one, including all the add ons.

What do you use your netbook for? If it's just surfing the net, you could try Lubuntu; it's really fast on lower powered machines (far lower than yours, so it should fly).
Or if you want Windows I guess try a clean install, since if you've never done that before there will probably be a lot of bloatware from when you bought it.
(and add another gig of ram if it's Windows 7 and you feel particularly adventurous).

May be if you make a fresh reinstall of IE it resolves the problem.

Clear your temporary files and prefetch files.

> WinKey + R
> Type %temp% press Enter
> Ctrl + A
> Shift + Delete

You are done with temporary files. It may resist deleting some files, ignore them and try deleting all other files.

Same goes for Prefetch files just replace point 2 with following:
> Type prefetch press Enter

good tip on the temp folder brother tilmeez,
hope i don't arouse bad feelings from a supermod for the second part though!
because the prefetch folder is apparently useful to load pages that you use most as quickly as possible.
some claimed performance tests have been run to check this and it apparently shows slower load times after deleting prefetch
but maybe if things are badly corrupted and the prefetch log is messed up - it can probably be a good idea to delete.

some sites and magazines say it's a good thing but others have said it's a no-no

XP systems have a Prefetch directory underneath the windows root directory, full of .pf files — these are lists of pages to load. The file names are generated from hashing the EXE to load — whenever you load the EXE, we hash, see if there’s a matching(exename)-(hash).pf file in the prefetch directory, and if so we load those pages. (If it doesn’t exist, we track what pages it loads, create that file, and pick a handful of them to save to it.) So, first off, it is a bad idea to periodically clean out that folder as some tech sites suggest. For one thing, XP will just re-create that data anyways; secondly, it trims the files anyways if there’s ever more than 128 of them so that it doesn’t needlessly consume space.
So not only is deleting the directory totally unnecessary, but you’re also putting a temporary dent in your PC’s performance.

another great benefit of prefetch is that XP uses .pf files to create and update the layout.ini file. XP’s disk defragmenter then uses layout.ini to optimize the placing of certain boot and application files on the outside of your hard disk. It does this each time you run disk defragmenter manually and also automatically in the background no less often than every third day. This causes your computer to boot up and load applications faster.

a good way of doing it if you need to delete prefetch is:

You can delete it if you made big changes otherwise the layout.ini will have a lot of old data.1. Delete all the files in the folder2. Turn on the Task Schedule service to automatic and start it if it isn’t already.3. Open a cmd window and type or paste this:Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks4. The folder will be rebuilt with the current apps and drivers.Also:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParametersdword value = EnablePrefetcher0 = Disable,
1 = App launch prefetch
2 = Boot Prefetch
3 = Both (recommended)My recommendation for the prefetcher is based on the amount of RAM that you have:128MB – Disabled (reg value 0)
256MB – Boot only (reg value 1)
512MB or more – Both (reg value 3)

this is all based on research of others though as i have not run any tests myself,
will be happy to edit if corrected,
peace

check the bottom of your netbook to ensure it has the product key sticker and all the 25 characters are still clearly visible, if so - i would advise you to put a piece of sellotape over it in order to keep it laminated.

if your key is there, you can reinstall windows 7 using your original product key, i can send you a disk (free) if you require one.

however if you're not too familiar with re-installing - the best option to check for is a recovery partition,
click on
"start" icon (bottom left)
"all programs" bottom left of pop up.
folder with the name of manufacturer on it (acer/vaio/dell) etc.
see if it has a "recovery" folder,
back up all documents and pics etc - run the clean install.

if your pc has a clean install of windows and still doesn't like the weight of the o.s,
you can slim it down,

your windows 7 netbook has an ssd:
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/wind...ed-tweaks.html

(xp only)
i found this to be quite a useful guide for turning genuine xp into a customized "performance edition" if your pc can do with a slimmed down edition:

No way for bad feelings akhee, partially because I never went too deep, just knew often prefetch keeps pf files for EXEs we have removed ages ago. And partially because they are nice to members only and very rough to staff :(

phew :phew at least i didn't get in trouble (only joking) :)
dunno - this is third hand knowledge but apparently it only keeps 128 files,
though it seems as if it's a good idea to clean it at least once in a blue moon and then rebuild

Btw if you have an ssd you should disable prefetch and superfetch because it decreases the life of your drive and is unnecessary. I also disable it on normal installs; I'm willing to take a small performance hit as long as I don't have to listen to that awful random paging of the hard drive it does every 5 mins ;)

I bought a new hard disk, Seagate 1 TB some months back. it's pretty new, with about 150 days of power on time. and for about a week now it's started making sounds, screeching and grinding sounds. It's worrisome to me as i have collected huge data overtime... I tried defragmenting the drive and performed filesystem check. What else i can do...? :exhausted

The power-on hours for my HD is 24x7 as opposed to barracuda's usage profile 8x5.

I am sure it started since i used virtualbox and created huge files (about 8GB fixed-sized images), that might be the reason for it? the head had to travel a long distance to read the scattered file? is that even possible?

I have another hard disk Maxtor 80 GB, old one with about 2.4 years of power on time and it's working smoothly with one bad sector. :p please advice.

Check the SMART status of it, and back everything up. It might be about to die.
I hate Seagate btw. I was forced to buy one recently after WD prices shot up to triple what they were, but Seagate had not then gone up.

I would say no because that is their purpose. Company servers thrash such drives 24/7.

what did you use for smart monitor? and have you tried hard disk sentinel?
you can also run a complete repair with hdat2 and if it's not too bad - it should isolate all those bad sectors and not show up second time.
it's all on hiren's boot cd v15

http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

i've also cushioned mine with sponge mat and put twin 12v fans from a broken xbox and an old cut 12v router adapter on top of it to ensure it doesn't burn out.
you could possibly pull one out of an old desktop and tape it to blow air outwards, and either hook it to your internal 12v pins or an external adapter.

lookee here what i made for water cooling with ice!

i used a low power fish tank pump and a metal bottle, some copper sheet and plastic pipe and heat resistant sealant.
throw the ice pack into the bottle, draw that to the pipe going to the bottom of the green cpu bottle with the bottom cut out and joined to the copper with a rubber phone case as a washer, the warm water rises and comes out of the pipe near the top,
into the graphics cooler box, and back into the ice packed water bottle.
can also add another one for the hdd but wanted to keep it simple.
a bit impractical but i just wanted to make it with no heatsink or fans involved.
totally silent and super cool - and i think it can take an e8400 at 4ghz easily

the crude radiator can be added on the way back to the ice, but will need more twists.

That's quite impressive - a watercooling kit you made yourself... although I think you should have just bought a waterblock (it'll look nicer than a big bottle and perform better :p). Btw why did you add the icepack? The icepack temp. cannot be maintained for even an hour with all that heat. Post up some temps (after an hr and 2 hrs)!

The ice packs are in the fridge so I can always replace them if I see hazardous heat.
Will post temps when I get new desktop board (damaged mine.....with water - last one didn't work, used solder instead of heat sealant and the thin points gave way, this works, tried it on the laptop).
Just had to make it - am a bit persistent.

what did you use for smart monitor?
I used Ubuntu's native disk utility to monitor SMART.
I would try another just to be sure,
The link to the disc I sent you is bootable and works in dos - os independent,
I have managed to save a few dead hdd's with hdat2 after getting detailed spin up history and sector details with hard disk sentinel, I'm sure it can help
It also has live graphical mini Xp in it so you can have disk management and command lines etc for windows pcs

the boot cd works with ext4, dunno how hard disk sentinel works with it though as i've never seen that sort of display - this is the usual dos diagnostic on a fault:

if you're getting a clean bill of health then i would assume it's the file structure and layout, what happens if you rar your files?

oops - just noticed - you're getting 4 bad sectors on the maxtor 6V080E0,
i'm pretty certain hdat2 can back them up and isolate them automatically in an efficient manner (better than the likes of chkdsk anyway)
you have to be patient with it though, i made the mistake of wondering why it's taking so long on the first few and damaged them beyond repair by pulling out in the middle of repair,
now i use a separate pc and leave it overnight if necessary, no user input is required once the process has started, but a fan is strongly recommended.
they can get hot.

if you split them up into rar and delete/move the main files that you use least to an external - do you get the same screeching sound?
(those new large 8gb files you mentioned)

No, I havent tried that. Those large files i mentioned, are now purged, I deleted them. I was using them for some testing purpose. Those iso images and rar files were there before the hard disk started making sound, so i am now confused.

tell me one thing, bro, the SMART status says that the HD is healthy and now should i stop worrying for my HD is making sound? I am least worried about Maxtor whihc has 4 bad sectors because i dont have any important data in it. :hmm:

if both the tests are showing 100% there shouldn't be any cause of worry,
but if my disk was sounding like you described i would still have my hair on end,
have you scanned it for spyware/bots etc?
i also found this quite useful for feeling familiar with what's taking up what:
http://www.diskanalyzerpro.com/

again - if they say they're healthy, i'd believe they were but still be concerned about longevity,
why not backup onto different smaller drives and dban the thing and write complete zeros?

dban is also on that iso disc along with other wiping tools

^ Well, i dont use windows on my 1tb hd, so there is no chance of spyware or bots. also i cannot run certain disk utilities on my linux hd. i will try diskanalyserpro and hdat2 on my maxtor hd.

dban is a linux environment program.

http://www.dban.org/about

with or without dban, wiping the drive on a low level or even on a simple format would probably tell you if the scratching was file based

To give an opposite view; I think you should either leave it or run a program like spinrite for a few days on the drive. You already know there are no bad sectors, and those you have on the other drive cannot be repaired by dban - if it see's a bad sector it won't even touch it; you'll just get an error after like 30 hrs or however long your option takes.

^ but if after he backs up the one with no errors (the 1tb) and formats it, he can be assured that that it's a folder organisation issue and it should stop grinding, then he can put his files back on in a more organised structure (coz i know how stressful it is to hear your drive grind away - it feels like your heart's being torn out. ;D
the maxtor can be repaired with hdat2 though and there'll probably be no need for wiping

we had a customer come in the other day and her xp had failed, instead of backing up and making her buy a new drive and then reinstalling os + drivers, i repaired it with hdat2 unattended in 1 and a half hours (80gb) it fixed 2 bad sectors, and it booted into her o.s perfectly. she's happy, i'm happy.

Anyways I'll try backing up the files and formatting the HD again and repair the 80gb with hdat2.

let us know how it goes, i like to hear success stories.
(remember to be patient with hdat2, it can take time on bad sectors.
choose the first option (the top one), "check and repair bad sectors".

you have a program running in the background,
you can stop unnecessary programs from starting up by using msconfig

xp:
start
run
msconfig
startup programs.
UNCHECK THE PROGRAMS YOU DON'T NEED (DO NOT STOP ANYTHING YOU DON'T RECOGNISE AND DO NOT STOP YOUR ANTIVIRUS)
click apply/ok
a reboot is required

VISTA/win 7:
start
msconfig (in the search box)
continue with same as above

(depending on what you use)
i normally stop programs like win live messenger, real player etc,

removing startup programs won't prevent them from working, it'll just prevent them from starting with windows and slowing down your pc unnecessarily, you can click on their respective icons on the desktop / start menu to access them normally.

if your computer has a product key sticker with 25 characters, you can activate with that, or there are other ways,
also, did you install from a corporate disc or an oem?
are you online now?

This might be difficult to guide you through the process of finding out your keyboard model.

Only because we don't know what operation system you are using to provide a step by step
view of your devices. You have to keep in mind that you have very knowledgeable forum
members. But translating that knowledge into providing technical support which is a
process gets lost in translation.

Go to the start on your task bar, locate control panel, locate hardware, view devices
installed, locate keyboard.

Yeah do this:

go to Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager > expand Keyboards > Double click the keyboard listed and click update driver.

Or for a quicker way.

Click Start > in the search box type devmgmt.msc

I dunno if this can be posted here in this thread, but did anyone here use two operating systems at the same PC? Did that slow down your system performance?
I would like to have a Linux based OS like Ubuntu or Fedora installed along with windows 7 that I already have now.
I have i5, 2.30 GHz. RAM is 4 GB.....will that be okay with 2 OSs?

Any good links for the steps to do that will be appreciated. I wanna have tried steps, I'm so busy to go around from site to site to find good, clear steps.

:wa:

Maybe the file that you have is a powerpoint slideshow file. To open that, first open a blank MS Powerpoint document by clicking Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Powerpoint. Once a blank presentation is opened, click on File -> Open and browse to your saved slideshow file. Then you can save this file as a .ppt file.

To post a screenshot, save the image and upload it on any image hosting site such as imageshack.us and paste the link here in this format:

Wa'alaykum Salaam.

I use Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP on my computer. My Hard disk layout is totally different from what your might be. I have installed windows XP on an 80 GB hard disk and Ubuntu 10.10 on a 1 TB hard disk.

You should always install windows first in you are trying to use GRUB as default bootloader.

anyways coming to installation of Ubuntu on your computer, download the Ubuntu iso image and write that to a CD.
Open your computer and insert the CD and the CD will prompt you to run the Wubi (windows installer for linux)
Follow the instructions, allot some space for the Linux partition and install it on that allotted space.
Configure the bootloader and you will have ubuntu entry in the boot options.

P.S. Considered you as an advanced user.

I dont personally recommend virtualization if the processor does not support hardware virtualization. Can you find vmx flag in the processor's instruction set?

She has an i5 with 4GB of ram, which is more than enough.
Better to try out a new OS, rather than formatting and reinstalling everything only to find you don't like it or prefer a different flavour of Linux. Also, being able to access both at the same time will be more comfortable.
Definitely give virtualbox or vmware a try. Great idea from Islamica.

Nice observation, didn't read the specs sis Dana posted,
I have been looking into VMware tutorials over the past month and found it can be very useful, especially for making custom OSs in pre-installation environments without having to constantly reboot.
I'm trying to make os discs with programs such as vlc, security essentials, Skype, Firefox/ chrome etc all preinstalled so I can save a good few hundred hours a year spent installing program's, but have only messed with nlite and usb multiboot before,
Will pm you if I get stuck ;)

Thank you all for your suggestions and links. I checked my Hard disk condition and found that I forgot to allot hard disk when I bought the laptop few months ago. I tried to do that yesterday but I couldn't find it under the options there, is that becuz I suppose to do that when I firstly got the PC? (I guess that might be the case) becuz I have done that process many times in the past for other PCs that was newly used or just getting formatted, but its not working with my PC now.
Will leaving the hard disk un-partinoned will affect installing another OS?

And how to get the GRUB bootloader? or is it already there?

hidemyass.com is a useful route too, you can just do your search from there and it will get routed through their constantly changing ip,
it is claimed that it blocks your ip from coming up at the source:

here's an example of a result, you'll notice that the website address is gibberish:

Just a couple of more questions; I was searching for an IP changer on Google and some of them you have to pay for it while others are free to download.... How would you know which one are reliable fast and free of virus and ads??

If I use hidemyass.com will I still get the same results on google as I would have done without using this route?

Do you have to use a gmail id to do this? I'm not sure but someone was telling me ages ago about changing your privacy setting and that way google wouldnt be able to store your searches? :?

Usually this is due to cookies. Either delete them or get an add-on.

apologies for not responding earlier sis, didn't check the thread,
hidemyass.com is a little different in that you have to input the website you want to go to rather than a normal search,
like instead of youtube, you have to put youtube.com

forefox has some free extensions that can change your ip and let you choose different countries' ip addresses which i feel is better than deleting cookies,
because of the fact that google has proven itself to be a spying machine with endless amounts of backup storage, i don't think deleting cookies will help much since you're going through their servers, and the servers can keep a log of your ip along with search histories without having to touch your pc.
you can also find a few free limited ones on cnet.com
but they only give you a few ip choices.

please bear in mind that even remote ips aren't always safe since the spooks can set some up and give them publicity in order to snoop specifically on those who choose privacy,
i came to the decision to just be open about what i say and not anything against the laws of Islam as far as i am able.
another thing you can look at is tor networks, but again, bear in mind that nothing is safe if they control it and own all the bouncer routers since they can log your ip as the first point of contact.

please do not let this make us over paranoid and deter us from speaking the truth, the Prophet's of old didn't have tor networks and had to speak openly, despite some being beheaded, they didn't give a darn.
and the more people get vocal, the less chance of them stifling the "odd few", so let's invite every one to help us speak the truth.

i have circled the ic in question and provided far shots for location,
the chip i need is "XZ", WHICH IS BETWEEN "XY" AND R100:

It is a good idea, but HD prices have skyrocketed. :p

I was planning to buy a portable HD but then I decided to buy a laptop itself rather than spending a large amount on just a HD.

true, i'd be paying double, yeah, better to find an ic for now or somehow get hitachi to replace this one, but then they'd demand my old one first.
think it would be wrong to but a new one and swap the controller board then return the new one since mine is still under warranty and they'd have to replace it anyway?, or back up to the new one and just get the old one replaced, but again, that would mean having 2 crappy hdds

Call them and explain the situation to see if they can send you just the board and you can send yours.
If they say no, and you don't know what the IC does, then the only thing you can do is buy the same disk again.

they wouldn't take any responsibility for it for sure, no one does unless they're crazy and want to risk getting sued.

and even if they agree to replace just the board, i don't want to risk sending them 5 years of stuff with no secondary backup and it getting misplaced or lost in the post.

i have emailed them and waiting to see how they'll resolve it.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting our Hitachi Technical Support.

Unfortunately, we do not supply hard disk components,
we only replace complete units. I also do not recommend
swapping the controller board with this device as it is
most likely not gonna work. Modern hard disks are somewhat
"married" to the controllers on a software level and
require specific programming that we do not support.

Please contact a data recovery service if the data is indispensable.

Best regards,

If I would have replied to a client in the way he did, I would have received a warning letter from my manager. ;D

And, yes, you can try contacting the data recovery service. But it is highly unlikely that replacement of the chip wont work (at least that's what I think). You can still try to replace the chip imho.

lol, that's how i speak with my customers, very casual personal level, including words like crap and dumb, but in a nice way in way of advice about economic viability :)
can't help it, it just comes naturally and is usually quite good for communication purposes, dunno about writing "dunno" in a professional email though, but i believe his expertise is valued.

it has something to do with the fact that the disk health, sector, mapping etc info is written into an eeprom somewhere on the controller board,
i could still get the board and change the burnt ic, that way all the history stays intact.
gonna try it insha Allah and let u know how it goes,

lolol if you were amused at that email, check this one from a few years back :)

Might be the network manager (old issue but I didn't get it). Try:

sudo mv /etc/rc6.d/S35networking /etc/rc6.d/S15networking
sudo mv /etc/rc0.d/S35networking /etc/rc0.d/S15networking

You can name them back if it doesn't work.

Light reading? You mean about the five lights below 'Ubuntu' on the splash screen?

Yes, I've noticed that they glow and run normally until a certain point when only one of them would glow red (the first one) and it seems the shutdown process is frozen then and after that the first two'd glow red and it seems the shutdown process has been frozen again and after sometime they resume to run normally and the computer would shutdown. Man, just now i've checked and it is taking 50 seconds to shutdown...:( :crying:

I also see a performance degradation after the update...:(

And the renaming of files didn't work it is still taking a long time to shutdown. I feel like i am using a Windows machine...:p

One more issue with the Fn keys. I cant get all of them to work. I tried searching the internet and asked about it on Ubuntu Forums with no luck. :|

Fn+Esc - Mute/Unmute - Working
Fn+F1 - Lock - Not working
Fn+F3 - Suspend - Working
Fn+F4 - Hibernate - Not working
Fn+F6 - Brightness Increase - working
Fn+F7 - Brightness decrease - working
Fn+F8 - Switch on/off wireless - not working
Fn+F11 - activate numberpad - working
And some of the functions, I dont even know about them.

I was using Thunderbird to manage all my email accounts and used IMAP for Gmail and Yahoo and POP for Live and Hotmail (both are the same but with different domains). And the emails from Live and Hotmail were synchronized and downloaded to my hard drive, the worst part, the profiles of Live and Hotmail were accidentally deleted and the mails were not on the inbox either. When emails are synchronized through POP it downloads mails to hard drive and then deletes them from the server. It had some important emails...:cry::cry: about my certification exams from IBM. Is there anyway to recover them,,,,? :exhausted

IMAP works like a charm but aargh! why don't Live does not support IMAP. One more good reason to hate Microsoft.

Hoping I can get some help from the experts here.

My computer is a desktop Advent (PC World own brand) running Windows Vista 64-bit, purchased in early 2009. On my old PC, I had sound recording software downloaded and installed (that records any sound from your computer), and they worked fine, but none of them work on this one. Apparently it seems there was some problem with the sound cards (or maybe drivers, I'm not sure) on the early Vista 64 bit computers. I read on one website that you need to upgrade to service pack 2, to be able to search for and download updates to the drivers or new drivers. I've updated today to service pack 2, and searched for new drivers, but it says there are no updates available. So how do I get round this?

This is what I have under sound, video and game controllers in device manager:

IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI

I really want to be able to record for Ramadan.

Jazaakumullah khayr for any help anyone can offer.

If so its most likely your audio device settings thats causing the issue.

I didn't know about Sound Recorder. Jazaakallah khayr for that. I was using downloaded ones.

Even with this one, I get the message "an audio recording device cannot be found."

It's not a problem with my settings as such, but a problem that affected either the soundcards or soundcard drivers of the earlier Vista 64 bit systems.

And I need help in how to solve it/get round it. I tried installing SP2 which was supposed to help locate drivers/updates, but hasn't. There are other things on the net, people talking about the same problem on different makes of computer, but they are very technical and I don't understand what's being said.

I don't think any sound recorder can work til the sound card/driver issue is fixed, and I need help with that.

Jazaakallah khayr.

What sound recording software have you installed?

:sl:

Sound recorder, which comes pre installed with Windows, which gives the error message above.
Free Hi-Q recorder, which worked fine on my old pc. They've now put a message on the website saying it won't work with Vista 64-bit and apparently they've developed a paying version that is supposed to work with Vista 64-bit.
Free Audio Recorder, which gives advice on things to try if you have Vista 64 bit, which I've tried and don't work.
Wavepad sound editor, which also doesn't work.

I've tried every combination of settings for recording device and output device, but until I know how to solve this problem of the soundcard/driver not being recognised, I'm pretty sure nothing will work.

I have no problem with playing any kind of sound, either on a media player, or youtube or live streaming.

It is the recognition by any kind of recording software that seems to be the problem, or either the souncards/drivers themselves.

Jazaakallah khayr.

What do you have under "Other devices"?

3) In control panel what do you have listed under "Sound" and the "Recording" tab?

I can't see an "Other devices" option anywhere, either in control panel itself or on the device manager.

The Stereo Mix is enabled rather than disabled, and I have selected show all disabled and disconnected devices.

Or did you mean that third sound tab, which is sounds applied to events in windows and programmes, such as beeps and the like?

Things to try (I like to number things ;)):

1) Double click the microphone option under the "Recording" tab from the screenshots you posted (or right click and "set as default"). If recording still doesn't work change it back.

2) Try this app: http://camstudio.org/ (I assume you want to record internal sound (ie sound from your pc) as opposed to external (ie you talking)).

3) These are the latest drivers for your soundcard so update if needbe - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...G45ID&lang=eng

Jazaakallah khayr for your help.

I did number one, set the microphone as the recording device, and tried Sound recorder and Hi-Q recorder - they didn't record anything. Sound recorder has a help button, which I clicked and was reading, and it had hints on using it, and then a troubleshooting guide if you couldn't record, and that gave the option to run an audio recording troubleshooter, which I did. It said it found a few problems but I couldn't tell if it had fixed them. I thought I'd set things back to the sound card and try again, and noticed that it the troubleshoot had set it back to the sound card already. So tried sound recorder and to my amazement, subhaanallah, alhamdulillah it worked, so I tried Hi-Q recorder, that I haven't been able to use for over 3 years, and that worked, tried audio recorder, and that worked as well, alhamdulillah. And so did Wavepad. This is nothing short of a miracle for me, but one brought about by finding out about Sound recorder in the first place, as per Br IbnAbdulHakim, and following number one that you'd suggested. Jazaakkumallah khayran katheera in this world and the hereafter, without limit, ameen thumma ameen.

Does anyone have the problem of Adobe flash player crashing/freezing on Firefox?

I do all the updates regularly, and a few days ago got a Firefox page the other day showing all the plug-ins/add-ons that needed updating, and I updated flash player from there as well, but apart from the first few hours, the problem still persists. Whenever I go to a page that has an embedded video, Firefox freezes while it loads, for quite some time, and eventually only after some time can I scroll through the page or watch the video, but very often, it freezes for up to five minutes at a time, and where the video was embedded, it is greyed out, and it says Adobe flash player has crashed.

The Imams of the Haramain thread is a nightmare to visit because of this, even though I like to read it, and I know I'll be stuck there for ages.

Anyone have any ideas?

Mazameer For Me Is The Same. If I Visit The Mazameer Muadhin Forum And Click The Main Thread Which Contains Dozens Of Videos On The First Page - Internet Suddenly Slows Down And I Have To Force Close The Tab As It Cant Take It.

wa'alaykum assalaam,

I was having similar problem a while back. I disabled the flash from the extensions and waited till a new flash upgrade came in from adobe and that seemed to solved the problem.

I've sent a Test PM to you. If you are not receiving it, use another computer. If you are still not receiving, the problem is not in your computer.

It has nothing to do with the user computer.
May be you just need to remove some old messages to free space.

Check the 'spam' folder.
Your email provider could enlist IB in the spam list.

Oops, I thought what she mean with mail account was PM folder in forum, not email. That's why I disable my PM notification because I wanted to know would I receive notification or not if I disable it.

Then probably your email provider is even silently rejecting emails from IB.

Actually it become a major problem and requires to reconsider registration policy for new users, because to activate an account, one need to receive confirmation email. When i was registering, it came to the spam folder as well.

This is not necessarily due to the evil intentions of your email provider, such filtration may happen on many stages, ie updated antispam software, which checking hostnames for abusive words and someone added 'Islam' in to the list, many reasons can be.

Btw, do you receive any emails at all?
