:sl:
I was reading something on Muhammed ibn Abd al Wahabb and he wanted the structure on top of the Prophets grave destroyed.
Should structures above graves be razed and if so would that include the structure built above the grave of the Prophet Muhammed(SAW)?

Shukran in advance for any replies.

Islam forbids erecting structures over graves, and commands that any such structures should be knocked down. But it is permitted to put a marker on the grave so that the family and friends of the deceased will know where it is. However, this marker should not be a structure or anything else that is not allowed in sharee’ah.

Thanks for the reply but what i'm wondering then is why there is a structure above the Prophets grave or is his case somewhat different?

The same applies to the Prophet's (SAWS) grave...

The prophet SAW grave is different because it is inside masjid nabawwi.
The structure actually works sort of a fence surrounding the graves of prophet SAW and Umar r.a. and Abu Bakar r.a. to separate it from the masjid instead of something to glorify it.

without the fence structure, the graves would have been integral part of the masjid and openly accessible to everyone, which would have undoubtedly invited all kinds of shirk activities from the pilgrimage. That would have been much greater mudarat.

even as it is now, many pilgrims would try to do things to/with the grave structure which is borderline shirk. Thankfully, the guards are always vigilant and rebuke them.

The grave of the prophet has been outside the masjid for a long time and was included only due to modern upgrades and enlargements that most scholars at the time told the sultan they shouldn't be made. Islamic khilafa went through periods where there were Khalifas who did not abide by the Sunnah, and times when Shia empire ruled, so out of glorification King Qalawoon built the dome above the grave and upgraded the masjid 1300 AD (678 Hijri).

Technically speaking the structures above the grave need to be removed, they were innovated anyway centuries after the prophet's passing.

Every innovation is a misguidance and every misguidance is in the fire.

Ya Allah protect us from everything that is outside the fold of the purest of religions, which is the religion of al-Islam.
