It seems to be the Western conception that heart is depicted as such in popular media and folklore. At least Muslims should not accept that. And I would expect a religious gathering to not subscribe to Western ideals.

Just my criticism of the poster.

It seems to be the Western conception that heart is depicted as such in popular media and folklore. At least Muslims should not accept that. And I would expect a religious gathering to not subscribe to Western ideals.

Just my criticism of the poster.

To me, yes it does. It shows me that the organizers (perhaps the Poster designer?) are influenced by Western conceptions and ideals. This means they might not be the best people to learn Islam from. Anyways. I'd still give them benefit of doubt that it could be the fact taht since they are addressing Western Muslims who were born and influenced by the West, its necessary for them to talk to this specific audience in Western ways in order to penetrate the hearts and minds.

If you read again what I wrote you will see that I talked about Western ideals and conceptions. Is English language in any way humanly imaginable related to "conceptions" and ideals? Language is a language, based on sounds, words, meanings, grammar. It has nothing to do with beliefs, ideals or conceptions. Words in English language might be created based on Western ideals but words themselves are NOT ideals. They represent ideals as majority of people have come to accept the meaning of each and exact word.

And I've already explained why it matters. Western beliefs and ideals are devoid of Islamic thought. So are "Eastern" ideals and beliefs. Islam no where tells me that the heart looks like that or should be shaped like that.

Its just that majority of people have to come to accept that symbol representing heart. I am just questioning that why a Muslim gathering should be using that .... specially when this symbol is heavily representative of the disgusting Valentines day. This symbol is also used on some medical tools that I've seen ... but medicine is not Islam. Medicine is a human endeavor but Islam is not.

Quran is in the language of Arab kaafirs. But does Quran use images of the Arab kaafirs in its pages? Especially those images which do not even represent the truth? I'd take a pen image to represent pen because pens do look like the images we are so used to see. But does this heart symbol look like a real heart?

And to end it off, I have no personal liking for the English language. I am using it here on these forums or in real life because I am forced to. The Muslim world I was born into deemed it necessary for them to teach the language to us as they just had begged out of slavery of the Western colonialism, more specifically the British/English imperialism. My university teaches in English. Businesses use English language. If I'd have it my way, I'd use a more sophisticated language and I actually do when I talk to friends and parents. Anyways.

I guess I just wanted to start an argument tonight no matter how trivial. :p

The question of if it originated by trying to represent a real human heart is irrelevant. The fact is that in pop culture it represents a heart, just as greek symbols/alphabet, astronomical symbols, etc. are used to represent things like male, female, etc.
The bottom line is that it is a symbol which has no religious meaning, therefore I cannot see your argument. It is one thing to say that you are personally averse to it but to indirectly question the validity of the lecture and put doubts in peoples minds is another.

Abu Abdis Salam

Abu Abdissalam Muhammad Nabeel was born in the central English town of Coventry and was raised in London. Graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the City University in London, his zeal for knowledge led him to give up a subsequently lucrative career in the computer industry to join Dar Al-Hadith Al-Khayriyyah in the blessed city of Makkah and obtained a degree in Islamic Studies specialising in Hadith and it's Sciences.

During his time there, he studied under many of the prominent scholars of our time. He is currently in the final year of his degree at the Darul-Hadeeth, Makkah.

During the course of his studies he has acquired ijazas for all of the six major books of Hadith (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Na'sai and Ibn Majah). In addition, he also has ijazas for the Sharh of Aqidah Tahawiyyah of Ibn Abdil Izz al-Hanafi, Shaykh Muhammmad Amin al Harari's Sharh of Muqadimmah of Muslim and Nuzhat An-Nazr Sharh Nukhbat al-Fikr of Ibn Hajar.

Abu Abdissalam has translated a number of Islamic texts from Arabic into English for the benefit of the English speaking Muslims around the world. He is actively involved in many spheres of Da’wah in the UK and has numerous notable achievements. These include establishing the Islamic Network, a non-profit organization that provides a common platform for various da’wah efforts to work collectively in the UK and abroad.

Abu 'Abdissalam also appears regularly on Islam Channel, a UK-based satellite channel which is currently broadcasting two of his series: 'Heavenly Pearls' and 'Stories of the Prophets'.
