Hadhrat Abu Zar (Radhiyallaho anho) narrates that once the Holy Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) came out of his house. It was autumn and the leaves were falling off the trees. He caught hold of a branch of a tree and its leaves began to drop in large number. At this he remarked,'O, Abu Zar! (Radhiyallaho anho) when a Muslim offers his solat to please Allah, his sins are shed away from him just as these leaves are falling off this tree." (Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: “For every thing there is a face and the face of your religion is prayers. So see to it that none from amongst you damages and disfigures the face of his religion.”
Biharul Anwar, Volume 82, Page 209

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: “Whenever the time of each prayer arrives, an Angel announces to the people: (O’ People!) Stand up and extinguish, with prayers, the fire which you have set alight for yourselves.”

Biharul Anwar, Volume 82, Page 209

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: “The example of the five (daily) prayers is like that of a clear-water river flowing in front of your houses in which a person washes himself five times a day – cleansing him from all dirt.”

Kanzul `Ummal, Volume 7, Tradition 18931

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) states that Allah, The Exalted has said: “I have made the five prayers obligatory upon your Ummah and have made a covenant with Myself that one who maintains his prayers with respect to their timings, I shall place him in Paradise. As for the one, who does not maintain the timings, I have no covenant (with him).”
Kanzul `Ummal, Volume 7, Tradition 18872

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said: “Prayer is the pillar of your religion and one who intentionally forsakes his prayer has destroyed his religion. And one who does not guard the times of the prayers, shall be made to enter ‘Wayl’, which is a valley in Hell, as Allah, the Exalted, has said: “So woe to the praying ones, who are unmindful of their prayers.”[9]
Biharul Anwar,Volume 82, Page 202

The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said: “The name of one who forsakes his prayer intentionally is written upon The door of Hell from which he shall (eventually) enter.”
Kanzul `Ummal, Volume 7, Tradition 19090

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said: “The most beloved of deeds in the eyes of Allah are: offering prayers at the stipulated times; (then) goodness and kindness towards parents; (and then) Jihad in the way of Allah.”

In a well known and very interesting hadith, the Prophet (alaihi al-salatu wa al-salam) is reported to have said:

“Made beloved to me from your world are women and perfume, and the coolness of my eyes is in prayer.” (Ahmad and An-Nasa ‘i)

To prevent your mind drifting off (whilst praying) try to learn the meaning of what you're reading in the language you understand best. Whenever you pray try to recall the meaning of each word and this will (Insh'Allah) keep your mind on the task in hand.

Make a special effort for each prayer:
  • Make wudu properly.
  • Remove all the distractions from the room.
  • Make sure you're covered properly.
  • Read the du'a before prayer and also after you finish.
  • Make sure the place you are praying on is clean.
  • Make du'a after you finish.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds." (Sahih Al Bukhari Volume 1, Book 10, Hadith # 506)

Cleanliness:
The ablution, which precedes the Salah, is a good habit to keep the body clean, for there can be no Salah without ablution. The Qur’an made it clear when saying:
“O You who believe, when you rise up for your prayer, wash your faces, and your hands up to your elbows, and rub your heads and wipe your feet up to the ankles. And if you are polluted, then wash yourselves… God does not wish to place you in a difficulty, but He wishes to purify you.” (5: 7)
“…And God loves those who purify themselves.” (2: 222)
Prophet Muhammad said: “Allah does not accept prayer without purification.”

One Hadith of Muhammad (Saw) is sufficient to achieve all the above.....It is called Hadith Jibreel (a.s)...regarding a Question posed by Angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad (saw) .."What is Ihsan ?" To which Messenger of Allah (saw) said "It is that you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him. For though you see Him not verily He is seeing you." (Muslim , Hadith # 9)

Ihsan in English means Perfection, and so it is to achieve Perfection in attaining piety, the basis of which is God Consciousness at most and all times....i.e Know that Allah (Swt) Sees you and that we should make this Hadith the basis of observing Salaah and InshAllah we will be able to achieve all the above...

This feeling of Presence of Allah will help us establish our Prayers well, but this Ihsan (perfection) should not only be at prayer times, but also when we're dealing with Friends, relatives, family, our social environment.... Since Ihsan can help us reach Perfection in Salaah, we should not restrict it only to Salaah....
