Salaam,

Are there any formal procedures such as cleaning yourself or the like before reciting the Quran? Should one sit in a certain position towards Mekka?

Wa alaykum salam

One has to be in a state of ghusl and wudhu to be able to recite Qur'aan (in Arabic and from a text). If you are not aware of what these mean, it is best that you ask about and learn from a teacher in real life. :)

As the brother mentioned, you need to be in the state of ghusl and wudu. As far as the position is concerned, it is not required to towords Mekka, wAllahu ealem.

Quran is our Holy book. For its respect you should have to ablution before holding Quran. Then Kiss the Quran recite 'In the name of ALLAH the most merciful the most beneficial' then open the Quran and recite it. Always keep Quran at a high place from your foot.

Kissing and putting the mushaf above the foot is not based on any authentic narration; hence, if someone does not do that does not become a sinner. It is narrated that Ikrime ibn ebi xhehl did kiss the pages of mushaf; however, that does not mean that we should make it a tradition to kiss it every time we want to read it. Allah knows best
