No one is Safe from Hypocrisy!

It was reported that Ibn Abee Mulaykah (d. 117h) said:


أَدْرَكْتُ زِيَادَةً عَلَى خَمْسِينَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسِولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مَاتَ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلاَّ وَهُوَ يَخَافُ النِّفَاقَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ


"I met more than 50 of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace), and not one of them died except that he had (always) feared falling into hypocrisy."

It was reported that al-Hasan al-Basree (d. 110h) said about hypocrisy:



مَا خَافَهُ إِلاَّ مُؤْمِنٌ وَلاَ أَمِنَهُ إِلاَّ مُنَافِقٌ


"No one other than a believer is afraid of it, while the only one who feels safe from it is a hypocrite."



It was also reported that he swore by Allaah that:



مَا مَضَى مُؤْمِنٌ قَطُّ وَلاَ بَقِيَ إِلاَّ وَهُوَ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ مُشْفِقٌ؛ وَلاَ مَضَى مُنَافِقٌ قَطُّ وَلاَ بَقِيَ إِلاَّ وَهُوَ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ آمِنٌ


"There is no single believer who lived in the past or who lives today except that he was/is afraid of hypocrisy; and there is no single hypocrite who lived in the past or who lives today except that he felt/feels safeguarded against hypocrisy."
