5 things to do on Laylatul Qadr

So valuable is this Night of Qadr that the Quran devotes a special surah to it “Lailatul Qadr is better than a thousand months” [97:3]

This one night surpasses the value of 30,000 nights. The most authentic account of the occurrence of the Night indicates that it can occur on any one of the last ten, odd numbered nights of Ramadan, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29.

We should strive to stay up at least on the odd numbered nights of the last ten days. If we can't manage that then let us pray at least on the 27th night. If one prays on all of the last odd numbered nights then there is more chance that one may have caught this most powerful night and the reward is of over 83 YEARS OF WORSHIP! Subhanallah! Most will not even live up to that age!

It is a night that we CANNOT miss out on so here is how we can maximise this blessed night:

1. Recite the Qur’an abundantly

Az-Zuhri used to say upon the coming of Ramadan, “It is only about reciting the Qur’an and feeding the poor.”

Abdur-Raziq said, “When Ramadan came, Sufyan Ath-Thawri (Ra) would give up all acts of (voluntary) worship and devote himself to the recitation of the Qur’an.”

Laylatul Qadr is the night the Qur'an was revealed so we should spend much of the night reciting it for we will gain 700 hasanah (good deeds) or more by reciting each letter!

2. Strive to gain forgiveness

One should strive and do their utmost to gain the mercy of Allah especially in the odd numbered nights of the last ten days. If one leaves Ramadan without gaining the mercy of Allah then surely they are the most unfortunate ones and are the biggest losers in this world and the next.

The main Dua for Laylatul Qadr is the following:

Aisha (Ra) said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.'

"Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee" (Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi).

Gaining forgiveness on Laylatul Qadr:

Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger said: “Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul Qadr while nourishing his faith with self-evaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim).

We should sincerely repent for past and present sins with the intention of not repeating them again and ask of Allah to help us prevent ourselves from doing them again and ask Allah to perfect our characters and to help us improve ourselves in everyway possible.

3. Do much Supererogatory Prayers (Nafil)

Rabi'ah ibn Malik al-Aslami (Ra) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: "Ask (anything)." Rabi'ah (Ra) said: "I ask of you to be your companion in paradise." The Prophet said: "Or anything else?" Rabi'ah (Ra) said: "That is it." The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to him: "Then help me by making many prostrations (i.e., supererogatory prayers)." (Muslim)

The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Whoever draws near to Allah during it (Ramadan) with a single characteristic from the characteristics of (voluntary) goodness, he is like whoever performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever performs an obligatory act during it, he is like whoever performed seventy obligatory acts in other times.” – Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 1887.

In this most blessed month of Ramadhan all good deeds are multiplied by 70 or more. Every Nafil one prays one will gain the reward of a Fard Salaah and every Fard Salah is the reward of 70 Fard Salaah. Subhanallah what other time of the year is this possible? NONE! So let us make the best of these precious seconds and pray as many Nafil prayers as is possible!

Here are some Nafil prayers we can pray during the last 10 nights:

1. Two Rakat after performing Wudu (Ablution)

Abu Hurayrah (Ra) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to Bilal (Ra): “Tell me about the best of your deeds (i.e. one which you deem the most rewarding) since your embracing Islam because I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise.” Bilal (Ra) replied: “I do not consider any act of mine more rewarding than that whenever I make ablution at any time of night or day, I perform Prayer for as much as was destined for me to do.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)”

2. Tahajjud

Imam Abu Sa'id al-Khadimi (Ra) said,

"There is scholarly consensus (ijma`) that among the best of virtuous acts is the night vigil prayer." [al-Bariqa al-Mahmudiyya Sharh al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya]

The scholars derived the following in regards to Tahajjud from the Qur'an and prophetic hadiths:

1. The minimal night vigil prayer is 2 rakats. [Hindiyya, quoting Fath al-Qadir]

2. Its optimal recommended amount is 8 rakats, because this was the general practice of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions). [Hindiyya, quoting Fath al-Qadir]

3. Lengthier recitation is superior to a larger number of rakats prayed. [Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar]

4. It is recommended to start the night vigil with two short rakats, because of the hadith of Abu Hurayra (Ra) that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, "It you get up for night prayer, start with two short rakats." [Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawud]

Ibn Mas`ud (Ra) was asked, "I cannot pray at night." He said, "Your sins have prevented you."

4. Increase in Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

We should glorify Allah night and day, especially in the last odd nights.

Here are some easy and very beneficial Dhikr and glorification we can do throughout the last ten odd nights:

1. Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee

2. Subhanallah

3. Alhamdulillah

4. Allahu Akbar

5. Laa ilaha ilallah

6. LA HAWLA WA LA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAH

7. Asthaghfirullah

8. SUB-HAN'ALLAH HIL AZEEM WA BI-HAM'DIHI,

9. Subhāna-llāhi, wa-l-hamdu li-llāhi, wa lā ilāha illā-llāhu, wa-llāhu akbar. Wa lā hawla wa lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi-l-aliyyi-l-azīm

10. Lā ilāha illā-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamdu yuhyi wa yumītu wa huwa ḥayyu-llā yamūtu abadan abada, ḏū-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām, biyadihi-l-khayr, wa huwa alā kulli Shay-in qadīr

Or the shortened version:

11. Laa ilaaha illal-laahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shay-in qadeer

One can also recite the durood that one recites in one's Salaah or a Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallim

5. Make much Dua

We should be very busy in Dua as much as we can especially in the last 10 odd numbered.

Allah Almighty says in the Qur'an:

"When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me." [2:186]

The place of duaa is so high to Allah, that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallim) had said: "Nothing is more honourable to Allah the Most High than Du`a." [Sahih al-Jami` no.5268].

He also said: "The most excellent worship is du`a." [Sahih Al-Jami` no. 1133]

It is a good idea to write down the things most important to us that we want to ask of Allah in our Dua's. That way we will not miss out asking of Allah anything important. Therefore let us devote much of the night of Qadr in Dua asking of Allah for his mercy and forgiveness for all of our past sins and making firm intentions to Allah that we will change for the better and strive to become closer to him as well as make our Deen a FULL part of our lives and not just a little part of our life as Allah says:

Allah tells us In the Qur'an to enter fully into our Deen and not partly:

O believers enter into Islam completely and do not follow the footsteps of shaitan, surely he is your clear-cut enemy.... (Surah Al-Baqara, Ayah 208-210)

So then will we not make Islam a FULL part of our lives? This is our best opportunity and if we don't take it and death comes to us then surely we will regret it for ETERNITY!

May Allah enable us to make the best of these blessed nights and to keep us away from sins and distractions and may he enable us to find Laylatul Qadr and give our best performance in it. Ameen

When is Laylatul Qadr?

There is great difference of opinion about this, because it is of the matters whose certain knowledge has been lifted by Allah Most High from this Ummah, for the wisdom that people strive to seek it:

In general, it is agreed that it is most likely to be in the last ten nights of Ramadan, with the odd nights being more likely. Of the odd nights, the night of the 27th (which is the night before the 27th of Ramadan, for the Islamic day starts with nightfall) is most likely. Imam Shafi`i said that it is most likely to be the 21st, then the 23rd, then the 27th. Imam Nawawi followed the position of Imam Muzani and Imam Ibn Khuzayma that it moves around within the last ten nights. [Nawawi, al-Majmu` Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, 6.488]

Therefore let us pray everynight including 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th for it could fall on any of those nights.

And Allah knows best in all matters

Gabriel descending with a group of Angels on this night

Anas ibn Malik (RA) related that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallim) said: When Lailat al-Qadr comes Gabriel descends with a company of angels who ask for blessings on everyone who is remembering Allah, whether they are sitting or standing (Baihaqi).

Tonight and any of the remaining nights could be Laylatul Qadr so let us make the best of these blessed nights as they could be worth 83.3 years of worship.

They could also be worth mercy and forgiveness for all of our sins.

They could also be worth salvation from the torment of the grave and the fire of Hell and they could also be worth enrty into Jannah!

Best of all they could be worth closeness to Allah!

Request to please remember me in at least ONE of your dua's tonight and in the remaining nights of Ramadan!!!

May Allah give us all the ability to gain his mercy and forgiveness before Ramadan finishes. Ameen

The Chance to Change Our Lives Forever!

Have you ever felt like having fresh new start again in life? Have you ever wished that all of your past sins were wiped out like you were a new born baby?

Have you ever felt like you just have not done enough for the hereafter and that you have an empty good deed account that needs filling?

Have you also ever wanted to really get closer to Allah and to renew & strengthen your imaan (faith)?

Well the next few days are the perfect opportunity for us not only to have a fresh new start again in our lives but to have our entire lifetime sins wiped away like a new born baby and to have our good deed accounts filled!

This opportunity for us is on the Night of power:

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul Qadr while nourishing his faith with self-evaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim).

A night better than a 1000 months:

So valuable is this Night of Power that the Quran devotes a special surah to it “Lailatul Qadr is better than a thousand months” [97:3]

This one night surpasses the value of 30,000 nights. The most authentic account of the occurrence of the Night indicates that it can occur on any one of the last ten, odd numbered nights of Ramadan, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29.

Worship on all odd numbered nights:

Therefore we should strive to stay up at least on the odd numbered nights of the last ten days. If we can't manage that then we should at least search for this night on 27th.

Surely if we really want to find this most blessed night then we should pray on all of the last ten odd nights of Ramadan and gain forgiveness of an entire lifetime of sins and rewards of over 83 YEARS OF WORSHIP! Subhanallah! Most of us will not even live upto such an age!

This could be our last chance!

There is NO guarantee we will be alive next Ramadan. How many of us know of muslims who have passed away this year and did not make it to Ramadan? How can we guarantee that we will be alive next year to see another Ramadan?

So CANNOT miss this one opportunity to change our lives forever. If we ever wanted to have a fresh start and get ALL of our sins wiped out then this is our chance.

If we ever wanted to gain immense rewards to fill up our good deed accounts then this is our chance.

If we ever wanted the chance to renew & strengthen our imaan (faith) and get closer to Allah then this is our chance!

So we CANNOT afford to miss this opportunity for we may never get this chance again!

When are the odd numbered nights?

In the UK: 21st night has already gone.

23rd Night is on Monday 22nd August from Maghrib until Suhur.

25th Night is on Wednesday 24th of August.

27th Night is on Friday 26th of August.

29th night is on Sunday 28th of August.

So we should make a commitment to worship on all of the odd numbered nights with full hope of mercy and forgiveness from Allah and the hope of reward.

We should also make a firm commitment to Allah that we will change ourselves for the better forever.

If we walk towards Allah then he will run towards us!

May Allah enable us to make the best of the last 10 days & nights of Ramadan and may he enable us to gain the maximum rewards from this auspicious night. Ameen

Some misconceptions on the Night of Power

Does Laylatul Qadr start after Midnight?

It is a big misunderstanding that Laylatul Qadr is in the middle of the night. Laylatul Qadr starts from Maghrib up until the beginning of fajr.

Tahajjud prayer at night

Regarding the Tahajjud prayer then it is a minumum of 2 rakat upto 12 rakat. It is recommended to do at least 8 rakah.

In in Tahajjud prayer we should try to recite as much Qur'an as we have memorized possible for there is more reward reciting Qur'an in Tahajjud than on its own. What i find is a good way of praying Tahajjud is to darken the room which will help one pray with full humility.

One should imagine Allah infront of them and watching them pray. One should try to overcome oneself with emotion and even cry. One can recite any surah constantly. Some pious predecessors used to recite Surah Ikhlas again and again or a certain verse that they found powerful.

So when is Laylatul Qadr?

Regarding when Laylatul Qadr is then most scholars agree it moves around within the last ten nights of Ramadan particularly the last odd numbered nights. Therefore if we want to catch it for sure then we should pray EVERYNIGHT in the last ten nights. If not then at least the last ten odd nights. If we can't do all the odd nights then as many as we can. If we still can't manage that then at least on the 27th night.

The reason why it is hidden in the last ten nights is because Allah wants us to search for it by worshipping him sincerely in ALL 10 nights. The more effort we make to try to search for this night by worshipping as much as we can in the last ten nights then the more reward we will gain.

So lets search for it and not just pray just on one night!

Those of us who search for it properly in the last ten nights and pray therein with full sincerety hoping for reward can expect an entire lifetime of sins wiped out and over 83 years of worship reward. Subhaanallah! How generous is Allah?

So let us not become complacent! Let us worship in EVERY night from now until the end of Ramadan or at least as many nights as we can. We should try not to sleep in the night in these last ten nights but if we have to then we should sleep and wake up at least 2 hours before Suhur ends. The best time for dua and prayer is the time just before Suhur ends.

May Allah enable us to make the best of these blessed remaining nights. Ameen

JazakAllah Khair
Asalaamu Alaikum,

This is a matter differed upon by the jurists of the four Sunni Schools of Islamic law. The Hanafi School does not permit reciting from a copy of the Qur’an (mushaf) during Salat, with Imam Abu Hanifa of the opinion that one’s Salat is invalidated should one do so. The other Imams have allowed this practice, but one should be cautious in terms of making too many movements whilst carrying the Mushaf, since it may invalidate the prayer according to them as well.

The blessed night of power could be on any of the nights of the last ten nights of Laylatul Qadr but according to many scholars it is more likely during the last 7 nights. Tonight is the 23rd night which is the first of the last 7 nights recommend above. So we should all aim to do as much worship as possible in the last 7 nights InshAllah so we can catch the night where we can gain 83 years of worship reward and an whole lifetime of sins forgiven. It is a night after which we can have a fresh start and change our lives FOREVER by making the hereafter our main concern and wanting to do everything to please Allah and get closer to him.

Make quality Dua's not quantity:

It is not necessarily quantity or length of Dua that is important but it is the quality of one's Dua which really matters most. Quality in that one makes Dua to Allah like a slave and begger in humility and meekness asking of ones Lord and master most high and honoured whereas we are most low and insignificant.

We should concentrate and be mindful of Allah whilst doing Dua and does not let his mind wander. We should also try to imagine him in front of us and listening to make Dua for him. Also that we are most sincere whilst in Dua and it is far better if we cry out of meekness and humility and are most remorseful of our sins past and present and that we resolve never to repeat them again. We should cry for the salvation of ourselves and our parents and families and those of our families. We should cry like sincere beggers and slaves to the master of the Universe. We should cry for the state our Ummah is in and for our brothers and sisters being oppressed. But if we cannot cry then we should at least make our face like we are crying.

I also recommend that we make a Dua list right now so we can refer to it whilst in Dua so we do not forget what we must make Dua for. We should try to mix our worship so we do not feel tired or bored. Therefore we should devote much of the night to the Qur'an and make much Dhikr and Dua in between. We should also pray Tahajjud and make Dua after it and Dua is also readily accepted just before Fajr begins.

So let us make the best of tonight as we will NEVER get this Ramadan back again once it is gone!

The Majority of scholars believe Laylatul Qadr will fall on the 27th Night

"Verily this month has come to you where there is a night better than a 1000 Months. Whosoever is deprived of it, is deprived of all good; and none is deprived of its good except a totally unfortunate person ”. (Ibn Majah)

"Whosoever stands up (in prayer) on the Night of Power out of faith & hopeful of reward, all his past sins will be forgiven." (Targhib)

How unfortunate is the person who misses out on such a blessed night where on can gain over 83 years of worship reward which is more than an average lifetime and an entire lifetime of sins forgiven!

The Majority of scholars believe this night will fall on the 27th night of Ramadan. The night comes before the day so the night will be from Maghrib on the 26th day of Ramadan until Fajr.

So let us not miss out on worshipping Allah on this blessed night lest we be of the unfortunate ones who will be in utter regret for eternity!

What a bargain!

When it comes to a bargain sale on in a retail store we make sure we prepare for it by getting there early so we can get the best bargains. But much of the time those bargains are taken by someone else. Such items are temporary and will only benefit us for a short while.

But the bargain from Allah is endless and is available to all. This bargain will not only benefit us in this world but will benefit us for eternity. This bargain is unlike any other as it is from our creator who is free from miserliness and is so generous that it is impossible to comprehend. Therefore if we were to miss out on this bargain then we are not only so unfortunate but truly foolish.

Therefore let us GRAB THE BARGAINS as time is now short and there are only a few days left. This bargain only occurs once a year but we may not be alive to make it for the next one.

Subhanallah. WHAT A BARGAIN!

Assalamu-alaikum,

Last night was our 27th night.
The masjid was over-flowing - for both men and women - no place to park outside the masjid, no place to stand within the masjid.

While for 2 weeks prior to this, it ran at half capacity.

Our imam sent out an important message, which I wanted to share with everyone.

He asked (para-phrased):

'Where has everyone been over the last 2 weeks?
How sad is this ummah that we remember the masjid only for ONE MONTH of the year.
But how much worse is that ummah, who can not even do this - but only bothers on ONE day of Ramadaan!

While there are ahadith that mention that the night of power may be on the 27th night......what about all those ahadith that make mention of the other odd nights?
Are we not to seek out this great night on ALL of the odd nights?

He went on to mention the virtues of extra ibadaat during Ramadaan as a whole.....not just on one night of the month.
And how do we reconcile coming in late for the fardh prayers of Esha?
And leaving early....without taking full benefit of the rewards of taraweeh?'

Something to reflect on insha Allah....

May Allah (subhanawtaála) make all our intentions sincere this Ramadaan and for the rest of the year.
Ameen

the 5 things we can do at the night of Qdr are
1.offer our esha salat then tarabih then salat of Qdr
2.recit Quran which is the best thing to do at that night
3.Zikir
4.seek forgiveness from Allah again and again
5.inspire our family members and neighbors to do the same.

The following are 11 Dhikr, supported by Hadith that we can recite throughout last 10 nights:

Note: We should try & aim to recite each of these 10 Dhikr a 100 times each which makes a total of 1000 a day minimum.

1. Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee - Recite this abundantly during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

2. Subhaanallah

3. Alhamdulillah

4. Allahu Akbar

5. Laa ilaaha illallah

7 Steps to Maximise Laylatul Qadr:

1. Open fast (eat light) and pray Maghrib on time (In congregation for men - Walk to the Masjid)
Pray 2 Sunnah and as many 2 Rakah Nawafil as you can manage.

2.Recite Dua of repentance constantly from Maghrib to Fajr:

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee

'Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.'

3. Pray Isha and Taraweeh (In congregation for men until imam finishes - walk to Masjid).

4. After Taraweeh recite some Quran - even a page - with its meanings - as every letter could be worth over 30,000 good deeds tonight.

5. Give charity - each pound could be worth over £30,000 tonight.

6. Have Suhoor and leave 20-30 mins for sincere Dua, feeling remorseful, asking Allah to forgive all your sins, and make a firm commitment to stop your major sins that are destroying your imaan and connection with Allah. Then inshaAllah all your sins will be forgiven!

The Prophet (Sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "And whoever spends the night of Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” [An-Nasa’i]

7. Pray Fajr on time (In congregation for men - Walk to the Masjid).

Then make Dua for Allah to accept your Worship and Dua's. Please also pray for me, my family and the entire Ummah!

Do prayer more. Dua all the night. Help needy people and try to give them needy things. This will help you a lot in the judgmental day. Prayers for all
