Just what is patience? It's not necessarily waiting in line to buy popcorn and a Coke before the movie starts or waiting in the waiting room at the doctor's office. It's more than that.
Both the Quran and the Bible talk about the importance of patience and how patience can be the key to success. But if patience is staying sane at the movie theater or waiting room, then why are these Books placing so much emphasis on this character trait we claim we have?
It's because we don't know what true patience is.
To know this "true patience", take a look at all the countries hit with natural disasters; the main ones in the news being Haiti, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
Haiti was hit with an earthquake, cholera epidemic, and a tropical storm.
A volcano erupted in Indonesia and left behind devestation.
Areas in Pakistan are still underwater after the devestating floods hit.
Think about these affected peoples, these Haitians, Indonesians, and Pakistanis. Can you imagine what kind of horrors they must have gone through and might still be going through.
People lost their homes, friends, spouses, parents, children, relatives, things and people they've known for so long.
Think of the pain they've gone through, emotional and physical. How many of us can claim we can stay sane and not fall into depression when we lose everything?
But it's the patient ones, the true patient ones, who can get through. Accepting what has happened. Turning to Allah for help. Not losing faith in Allah.
Maintaining that connection with Allah and not letting go no matter how hard things become on you. Finding comfort in Allah, Who said He wouldn't burden us with more than we are capable of. Who said He will remember those who remember Him.
If we turn to Allah no matter what, then Inshallah He will reward us in this life and in the Hereafter.
