In the Quran, there is a whole Surah dedicated to Abu Lahab. Wasn't Abu Jahal just as bad? He was also a polytheist who denied the Prophet (saw) and killed and tortured many innocents.

Yeah, he was called the "Pharoah of this nation" by Prophet Muhammad, just as Pharaoh oppressed the people of Moses.

Abu Jahl is criticized in surah 'Alaq. See;

Read ayah 8 onwards.

Peace,

Once Abu Lahab asked Muhammad: "If I were to accept your religion, what would I get?" Muhammad replied: "You would get what the other believers would get." Abu Lahab responded: "Is there no preference or distinction for me?" In which Muhammad replied, "What else do you want?" Abu Lahab replied back: "May this religion perish in which I and all other people should be equal and alike!"

Whilst the Prophet(pbuh) was praying, Abu Lahab threw entrails of a sacrificed goat over him. For being his Uncle he was really cruel and constantly in the Prophets(pbuh) face. The Surah came down to him, he had 10 years to prove the Surah wrong but he never converted to Islam lol.

I have an issue with this analogy that Abu Jahal had 10 years to prove the Surah wrong by faking to be a Muslim. Maybe it shows that Abu Jahal did not like to lie about being a Muslim and fake things? Its like saying this "I am on truth because I know that Perseveranze will never kill any human being." So would you kill someone to just prove me wrong? :S

Asalaamu Alaikum,

You mean Abu Lahab brother?

The problem is that Abu Lahab really hated Islam/preaching of the message. From his story it seems he would go through great lengths to stop the preaching of Islam. When the Surah came down, which said he was destined to go to hellfire, what if he had repent and reverted (since everyone can revert) and his sins forgotten, then wouldn't the people question Muhammad(pbuh) about his Prophethood, making Islam more difficult to preach? Maybe Abu Lahab wasn't so smart or maybe like you said he was "truthful(didn't want to lie about being Muslim) though I doubt the latter, since his character suggests him being very ruthless, evil and extremely determined to deter the message of God.

Here's an article on it -

Islamic Scholars say that Chapter 111 is one of the miracles of the Quran

Islamic Scholars say that if Abu Lahab (and his wife) would have embraced Islam the whole Quran would have been in question. Because Quran clearly dictated that Abu Lahab (and his wife) will dwell in the Eternal Fire in the Hereafter, and both Abu Lahab (and his wife) did not embraced Islam and died as being unbelievers.
It should be emphasized that Abu Lahab (and his wife) had the chance to do that for Ten years (= 365 X 10 days). This means that Abu Lahab had 3,650 chances if he, one day, would have said that he is a Muslim and he believes in Allah, Muhammad and the Quran. In this case, the Divine nature of the Quran would have been suspicious and the trustfulness of the entire Quran would have been questionable. Also, Abu Lahab's wife had the same 3,650 chances to prove that the Quran is not revealed by Allah.
Chapter 111 was revealed at a time when no one but Allah could say who will or will not become believers later on. Many of the most severe opponents in the early days of Islam became devoted followers in later days, but not this couple (Abu Lahab and his wife). They tried everything to oppose, ridicule, and disprove the Quran. One would expect that they would also pretend to become believers just to throw doubt on the accuracy of the Quran. But they did not apply this obvious strategy. The logic question is what prevented them; if not the knowledge of Allah who knows that they will never believe or even try to claim that?
Not only that but there were at least 1,200 opponents of Islam around Abu Lahab and none of them had proposed to or encouraged Abu Lahab and/or his wife to claim that they are believers.
This increase the chance to 10 years X 365 days X 1200 opponents = 4, 38 Million chances to prove that the Quran is not revealed by Allah and Muhammad is a liar. However, this never happened.
For this reason, this Surah contains a clear miracle from Allah. Allah revealed this Surah before Abu Lahab’s death and his wife’s death. He informed them that they would roast in the Fire, which necessarily means that they would never accept Islam. This is what happened, exactly as the Knower of the unseen, Allah, informed us!
