As-Salāmu `Alaykum (السلام عليكم):

Is a marriage license required?

In many parts of the world the Imam marries the couple and they are acknowledged as husband and wife.

In Islam a woman maintains her identity and name.

In Western and developing countries a marriage license is required.

What evidence in Islam validates or invalidates this?

In many countries a marriage license is required for the following:

1. Health benefits for spouse
2. To secure maintenance if there is a divorce
3. Death benefits
4. Inheritance
5. Taxes purposes
6. Requiring permission to start a business (Belgium is one example)

Any contribution based upon Islam is invited.
