So at our last youth group meeting, the Imam gave us homework. He told us that 1 in every 1000 will go to Jannah. The rest will go to Jahannam. So he asked us, is this fair? And why is this fair? The hint he gave was "Yajuj and Majuj." Any idea what he's talking about?

'Abdullah ibne-'Amr Radhiyallahu 'anhuma narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallain said:
Dajjal will appear in my Ummah and remain for forty; I do not know whether for forty days, or forty months, or forty years. Then Allah will send 'Isa ibne-Maryam 'Alaihis Salam resembling 'Urwah ibne-Mas'ud RadhiyAllahu 'Anh. He will seek out Dajjal and then destroy him. Thereafter, people shall remain for seven years without enmity even between two persons. Then Allah will send a cool breeze from the direction of Syria; whereupon none shall remain upon the face of the earth whose heart has the tiniest particle of Iman, except that his life shall be seized by this breeze. Even if one of you were to enter the innermost recess of a mountain, it (the breeze) would enter even there and seize him. Thereafter, only the most wicked people shall remain who are as unstable as birds (easily startled) with a tendency to wickedness with the intelligence of beasts of prey (who have little intelligence and show violence and anger), neither knowing right nor objecting to evil. Then Shaitan will appear to them and say: Will you not comply to my command? They will say: What do you command us? He will then order them to worship idols (and they will obey him). Abundant sustenance will be granted to them and apparently, they will enjoy a good and luxurious life.
Then the Trumpet will be blown; and everyone who hears it will bend one side of his neck, and raise the other, listening attentively. The first to hear it will be a man plastering a water tank for his camels. Then he will collapse senseless, and die and so will all the people with him. Then Allah will send down rain resembling dew, causing the bodies of the people to sprout like plants from the earth. Thereafter the Trumpet will be blown a second time, and the people will rise looking around. Then it will be said: O people! Hasten towards your Rabb! The angels will be told to restrain them for they are to be questioned. Command then will be given to bring forth those who are to go to Hell and when they asked what proportion is to be brought forth, they will be told it is nine hundred and ninety nine out of every thousand. That will be a day which will make children grey haired; and that is the day when the Shin will be bared. (Muslim)

In another narration it is stated: Hearing that nine-hundred-and-ninety-nine out of a thousand will he doomed to the Fire (of Hell), the Sahabah were deeply grieved and it showed on their faces. Then Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: Nine-hundred-and-ninety-nine will be from Yajuj Majuj (Gog and Magog) and one from you. (Bukhari)

so we have nothing to worry aboutl, right? out of 1000, 999 will go to hell adn they will all be yajuj and majuj and the rest of us (humans) will all go to paradise right? so we can relax and stop worrying since we are all going to heaven and its the yajuj and majuj who are going to hell right?

its not that easy. theres another hadith that says that Prophet Adam (AS) will be told to take out the portion from his offspring which will go to hell. He will ask Allah how much and he will be told, 99 out of every 100 are going to heaven.

If the Prophet (SAW) told his sahaba that 999 of those 1000 going to hell are from Yajuj and Majuj, and the one going go heaven are from "you" (that is, the sahaba), then i think was done to make them feel better because their faith was so strong that the fear would make them lose all hope and would harm them. but giving them the good news that thye were all going to heaven wouldn't harm them. that is, they wouldn't think that they had nothing to worry about and could relax since all the ones going to hell are yajuj and majuj. i think that the hadith is specifically saying that the ones going to heaven are the sahaba (that the sahaba compared to those going to hell are 1 out of 1000) and shouldn't be generalized for the rest of the times. most of the people at the time of the Prothet (SAW) were great muslims and were bound to go to paradise. most of the people of today should be worried about their fate as most people of today are bound for hell, judging from their deeds.

also the hadith may be giving the ratio of the sahaba to the yajuj and majooj. And Allah knows best.

so we shouldn't think we are all saved from hell since the dwellers of hell are all yajuj and majuj.

And why is this fair? The hint he gave was "Yajuj and Majuj."
I understand the point the imam was making however, I don't think it was wise to link the high numbers in hell with fairness/unfairness.

The fact is, those who go to hell, will go due to either disbelief or sin - these matters rests on the shoulders of the individual alone. If a person is to fail in that responsibility, he would have only himself to blame. To bring fairness into this issue implies the people going to hell did not do anything to deserve it when that is incorrect.
