Hello, I am new to this forum, and also am new to the great religion of Islam. As of right now, I am Catholic, however, I want to convert to Islam (not sure how you do that). But I want to learn more about Islam, and so my question is: What would be the best English translation of the Holy Qur'an?

Dear that pleasing to hear that you decide to join the right religion Islam in your life. May ALLAH accept that intention. well as far as your question concerned you can easily get great translation by simply Google it. Google your query and you will get it. No buddy in this world is capable of changing the meaning or the word of Quran as it is guarded by ALLAH himself. So just go on and read it. :statisfie

Greetings Jody,

Welcome to the forum, Hope you enjoy ur stay here.

I am posting some links here which are good Islamic websites, so you can study.

Translation of Quran by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Ph.D. and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan

http://www.dar-us-salam.com/TheNobleQuran/index.html

Another good translation is by Saheeh International. In this link you will find translation of saheeh international also
and many other translations, but I advise you to choose translation by (DR.Hilali and khan) or Saheeh International.
If you like you can listen to recitation of Quran from this software also.It has both the translations I mentioned.

In this site there is section named " Quran" http://www.kalamullah.com/al-quran.html
(Here you will be able to find Translation of Quran also.)

http://www.islamhouse.com/ (many free Islamic ebooks)

http://www.qtafsir.com/index.php

In the end, I invite you to ponder and read the translation of Quran:

Home of Peace:

Allah calls to the home of peace (i.e. Paradise, by accepting Allah's religion of Islamic Monotheism and
by doing righteous good deeds and abstaining from polytheism and evil deeds) and guides whom He wills to a Straight Path.

Surah Yunus (Jonah) 10, ayah 25

The life of this world :

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and
rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth
is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw.
But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is)
Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world
is only a deceiving enjoyment.

Race one with another in hastening towards Forgiveness from your Lord (Allah), and towards Paradise,
the width whereof is as the width of heaven and earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His Messengers.
That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He pleases. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.

Surah Al-Hadid (Iron) 57,(20,21)

Way to forgiveness from your Lord:

And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as
wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2).
Surah Ale-Imran (The Family of Imran) 3, ayah 133

The final home:

Those who fulfill the Covenant of Allah and break not the Mithaq (bond, treaty, covenant);

Those who join that which Allah has commanded to be joined (i.e. they are good to their relatives and
do not sever the bond of kinship), fear their Lord, and dread the terrible reckoning
(i.e. abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which Allah has forbidden and perform all kinds of good deeds which
Allah has ordained).

And those who remain patient, seeking their Lord's Countenance, perform As-Salat (Prayer) (Iqamat-as-Salat), and
spend out of that which We have bestowed on them, secretly and openly, and defend evil with good, for such there is a good end;

'Adn (Eden) Paradise (everlasting Gardens), which they shall enter and (also) those who acted righteously
from among their fathers, and their wives, and their offspring. And angels shall enter unto them from every gate (saying):

"Salamun 'Alaikum (peace be upon you) for that you persevered in patience! Excellent indeed is the final home!"

Surah Ar-Ra'd (The Thunder) 13, ayat 20-24

Peace, Jody and welcome to the forum.

While there are good translations, there isn't really a best one, as none can capture the inimitable style, beauty, rhythm, and richness of meaning of the Arabic.

I agree with Brother Woodrow's advice in another thread, which is:

Until you can read it in Arabic it is best to use at least 3 translations.
Personally, I like a combination of Pickthall, Saheeh International, and the Noble Qur'an (Hilali and Khan).

You can read all three of those, (and a few more) here: http://quran.com/

When you choose a chapter or verse, be sure to tick the various translations on the left hand side.

Simply by believing firmly in your heart and saying with sincerity and conviction with your tongue, the shahaadah, the words of which translate into English as, "I testify that there is no God but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

"Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasooluh".

Please do ask if there is anything else at all that we can help you with.

Peace.
