A good point, if one listens to music all the time. I don't, but I do have it on in the car when I am driving, mostly just for background noise. It certainly doesn't distract me from thinking about Allah though.

firstly many scholars say music with just singing and the duff (a type of drum) is permissible, examples of which are found in the life of he prophet.
I think one of the primary evidences is this hadith:
Abu Maalik Ash'ari (radhiyallahu anhu) says that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say: "Most certainly, there will be in my Ummah people who will make lawful fornication, silk, liquor and musical instruments." (Bukhaari)
I would like to say in my own personal commentary that music is always found where lewd behaviour is. there is no nightclub without music. the above hadith seems to link 4 things together fornication, liquor, music and wearing silk. which sounds eerily like a nightclub.
if you think about it, a prohibition on music prevents this happening altogether, no more clubs, raving, = removing the majority of fornication, drugs etc = no unwanted std's, pregnancies and ruined lives
also, if you listen to music you feel spiritually detached from Allah. this is the result of any haram action because it goes against the natural disposition.
also music is designed to influence your mood, emotions etc not something healthy - its artificial feelings - this is also how they get you to buy their products when u see ads and walk into shops etc
also i read a study in some magazine (non muslim) that like 90% of all songs throughout history have been related to love or sex in some way. - which again comes back to the hadith
And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quran) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire)". (Surah Luqman 31:6)
Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood used to swear that the meaning of idle talk was singing. This view was held by Ibn Abbas (RA) and other Sahabah as well. Ibn Mas’ood used to say that music is to the hypocrisy as water is to a plant. The scholars are agreed that when singing is accompanied with music, then the prohibition is even stronger.
btw ibn Abbas is considered the primary and most authoritative scholar of the quran by pretty much all scholars - he was one of the Sahaba - you can google him 4 general knowledge, its important to know these people in our history
