do you watch movies with background music?

    Report bad ads?

    salam u alaycum,

very old subject but ive been rethinking my views on this recently.

Personally i dont watch movies or tv of this nature, i even try to avoid shops where there is music playing. but ive been hearing alot of sheikhs talking about movies theyve seen and it strikes me to be odd that im more strict than them

i think there is agreement that music when it is the focus is haram, this thread is not about that. but is background music in movies haram?

Re: do you watch movies with background music?

Why is music/movies considered sinful? I can understand some lyrics etc are rather bad, if relating to sex etc. But not music contains such lyrics nor are all movies/tv shows pornographic. I am still very new to Islam and don't recall anything in the Qur'an specifically saying not to listen to music etc (of that time anyway). about the only thing about music I heard referred to in one of the many videos I have watched by various notable brothers (Sheikhs) saying it distracts from thoughts of Allah. A good point, if one listens to music all the time. I don't, but I do have it on in the car when I am driving, mostly just for background noise. It certainly doesn't distract me from thinking about Allah though.

I may not have encountered the reasons as yet..or maybe I answered myself, it distracts from being mindful of Allah...

firstly many scholars say music with just singing and the duff (a type of drum) is permissible, examples of which are found in the life of he prophet.

I think one of the primary evidences is this hadith:

Abu Maalik Ash'ari (radhiyallahu anhu) says that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say: "Most certainly, there will be in my Ummah people who will make lawful fornication, silk, liquor and musical instruments." (Bukhaari)

I would like to say in my own personal commentary that music is always found where lewd behaviour is. there is no nightclub without music. the above hadith seems to link 4 things together fornication, liquor, music and wearing silk. which sounds eerily like a nightclub.

if you think about it, a prohibition on music prevents this happening altogether, no more clubs, raving, = removing the majority of fornication, drugs etc = no unwanted std's, pregnancies and ruined lives

also, if you listen to music you feel spiritually detached from Allah. this is the result of any haram action because it goes against the natural disposition.

also music is designed to influence your mood, emotions etc not something healthy - its artificial feelings - this is also how they get you to buy their products when u see ads and walk into shops etc

also i read a study in some magazine (non muslim) that like 90% of all songs throughout history have been related to love or sex in some way. - which again comes back to the hadith

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quran) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire)". (Surah Luqman 31:6)

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood used to swear that the meaning of idle talk was singing. This view was held by Ibn Abbas (RA) and other Sahabah as well. Ibn Mas’ood used to say that music is to the hypocrisy as water is to a plant. The scholars are agreed that when singing is accompanied with music, then the prohibition is even stronger.

btw ibn Abbas is considered the primary and most authoritative scholar of the quran by pretty much all scholars - he was one of the Sahaba - you can google him 4 general knowledge, its important to know these people in our history

Re: do you watch movies with background music?

Thank you very much for these two vids tango. They have answered my question quite clearly. I will also look up these scholars to increase my knowledge. One thing I have come to understand in Islam, there is always more to learn about the Holy Qur'an and its message.

I have not had problems listening to music. Movies would be boring to watch without background music.

Re: do you watch movies with background music?

Asalamu ALaykum Wa Rahmut Allahi Wa Barakatu,

I think it is haram, it doesnt matter if it distract you from Allah Subhanu WA Ta'Ala at the moment, but in general. I would stay away from music in general, doesnt matter what the lyrics say, because its the instruments that matter. Music puts you in a trance, that has been proved by science, it distracts you and makes you lose focus, that is why 'That song is stuck in my head!' is a VERY common phrase. Some lyrics or beat can come in your head at random times, and you feel like you want to listen to it again and again, just like nicotine or dr#gs. It is an addiction. It should be avoided, so I try to avoid it in games, movies, stores, etc. As a muslimah, Jannah is far more important than some random movie. Alhamdulilah. like it was said: "Music is the ALCOHOL to the soul." - Ibn Taymiyyah

If music is bad then why did Allah create song birds? Why did Allah create music?

Asalamu Alaikum wa Rahmut Allahi wa Barakatu,As I said, musical instruments are haram (birds don’t have that, they’re a living creature and singing is permissible in front of mahrams) and by your logic, we can also ask: why did الله Subhanu Wa Ta’Ala create wars? Hunger? Why did He create alcohol if it is prohibited? If by The Law of الله Subhanu Wa Ta’Ala it’s haram, IMPERMISSIBLE. Then we cannot do it, let’s not justify haram acts akhi, May الله Subhanu Wa Ta’Ala bless you, Ameen.
