'All over the world Muslims have begun their holiest month of the year by fasting from dawn until dusk each day, broken each evening by large, communal meals. The start of Ramadan is earlier each year because it is calculated based on the sighting of the new moon, which begins the Muslim lunar month. Muslims use the time to reevaluate their lives through the scope of Islamic doctrine.'

In pictures: Ramadan in Gaza's old quarter

At night time, when prayers are optional, the interior of the Omari Mosque is used exclusively by women, whilst men pray outside in the courtyard.

Abu Yusuf Murtaja runs this stall, selling dates and spices. He says, “Ramadan is better than all other months for us, partly because of the fasting
and piety, but also because this year, since Ramadan has begun, we’ve experienced no bombings.”

Thirteen-year-old Basil spends his days at the Omari Mosque. "Look at these arches. This place is really old and beautiful," he says marvelling at the architecture. For Basil, Ramadan teaches him patience. "I'm really thirsty, but everything we do is before God."

Traditional Ramadan lanterns, or fawanees, decorate the streets, shops and homes throughout the month.

As Muslims around the world mark the holy month of Ramadan, Gaza's old quarter comes alive as shoppers explore the markets in search of traditional Ramadan foods, in preparation for the breaking of the fast.

Abstaining from food and drink from dawn until dusk, Muslims stream through Gaza's narrow alleyways in search of dates, hibiscus, carob and spices, as well as traditional sweets filled with syrup and nuts.

Some of these pictures are heart breaking wala 7wala wla qiwta illa billah.. children receiving rations and when they shouldn't be fasting anyway. Parishioners pushing against Zionists pigs and in their own homeland to be able to make prayers.. and the injection of the 'temple' everywhere Al Aqsa has to be - even a topic regarding Ramadan and Muslims has to involve Zionists anyway..
May Allah SWT hasten those kaffirs' demise ameen ya rabb

It is a small world. Sheikh Hassan Saeed Al-Sakandarany is the founder and manager of dar altahfeez (school that teaches Quran recitation and memorizing) that I attend! The dar, called "Dar Al-Ihsan", was founded in 1996 and is one of the best in Alexandria, Egypt and is under the supervision of Al-Azhar University.

Little known is that the zionist have detained the imam of the al-aqsa masjid. Anyway, its sad indeed that they need to have permission from the israeli police and army to pray in al-aqsa.

May Allah(SWT) free the muslim world from the oppressors, the hypocrites and the infiltrators. Ameen

That is very true... there are many emotions involved in these pictures. The ones from Palestine are almost like a story, even though just a window, of the lives of the Palestinians. On the one hand there are images of strength, unity and celebration of Ramadhan as in other places, but then there are also images of oppression, conflict and struggle. It is a daily battle for them and yet they still smile and carry on.

There were many pictures of the Israeli checkpoints but I only included some - I may add some more later Insha'Allah. I found the two showing support for Syria particularly powerful messages of solidarity. And all the images of the poor, particularly children in refugee camps, are heartbreaking indeed. It is a reminder for us to make du'a for our Ummah as much as we can.

Another thing that stuck out for me was the emphasis on Qur'an - SubhanAllaah, people were reading it in the extreme heat of the sun under cover of prayer mats, the young and old are all studying it, and even the guard on duty was reading it. Seeing all our brothers and sisters exerting their efforts in this noble endeavour despite all their suffering and hardship is a big encouragement for us to strengthen our relationship with the Qur'an.

Edit: Added more pictures among the Palestine ones.

These photographs have truly added to the splendour of Ramadhaan for me, to see so many of our Brothers and Sisters around the world fasting, reading Qur'aan during this month, praying in congregation... Alhamdulillah. What a wonderful sight!!!

Patiently waiting for more to come, Insha'Allaah

Wa iyyaakum. It certainly is uplifting to see Muslims all around the world performing these acts of worship, as well as the unity, striving and generosity. May Allaah (swt) help all Muslims wherever they may be, accept our deeds, unite us all in this life and in the Hereafter unite us in the highest place in Paradise, Aameen.
