Salaam aleikom

when you're fasting voluntary, is it necessary to eat between maghrib and fajr? (Or between fajr and maghrib, I'm not sure which way you say it.)
Or is it permissible to eat any time you want if you still fast as many hours as there are between maghrib and fajr - as many hours as you would fast in Ramadan?

you fast exactly as you'd in Ramadan.
you abstain a good 10-20 minutes before fajr prayer and break your fast with maghrib prayer..
