Mr.Sariban - Cleanliness hero from Bandung
There is "Car-Free Day" that held every Sunday (06-10 AM) on the street in front of hospital where my wife is hospitalized.
This morning, as usual, the patient's families were ordered to leave the rooms when the time for patients bath, and cleaning service clean up the rooms. So, I used this time to visit the Car-Free Day event.
There were many people on the street, but my eyes saw an old man with yellow clothes who was busy to picking up trashes which dumped carelessly by visitors, using a metal clamp. I knew him, he is Mr.Sariban, a volunteer in city cleanliness.
I looked at him for a moment, and then I thought, why don't I clean up the street too?. So I started to picking up the trashes with my hand and put those trashed to the nearest trash can. Suddenly I heard
"bagus, bagus!" (good, good). I turned and saw Mr.Sariban smile and gave me a thumb up. "Yes, this is the good example of Bandung citizen who care to cleanliness", he said.
Then he approached me and whispered with showed his metal clamp "it's better if you buy a clamp like this, it's cheap and make your hand still clean". I smile and told him "may I borrow your clamp?". So, I used his clamp to picking up trashes until he said he would move again.
Back to the hospital, I was still trying to pick up trashes although only with my hand. What Mr.Sariban has done remind me to a hadith "Cleanliness is half of iman". Insha Allah, I will buy a clamp to picking up trashes, and will more care to my environment cleanliness.
Mr.Sariban is a popular figure in Bandung due to what he is doing everyday, traveling around Bandung city on his bicycle to picking up trashes and remind people to not littering trashes, but throw it to nearest trash can. And he is also active to unplug spikes mounted on a tree by the person who put up the illegal billboard. "Don't use spikes! it will hurt the trees, you know?!", that's what he often said.
Mr.Sariban was born in Magetan, East Java. He came to Bandung when he was 20 in 1963. He became a bum in the railways station before he worked in a stall. In 1972 he was accepted to work as temporary cleaning service man in govt own Cicendo Ophthalmology Hospital. Although he was just a temporary employee, his boss gave him a bicycle as an inventory vehicle. He rode that bicycle to go an back to the home, and on the way he was always picking up trashes he found on the street. He did it simply because his love to cleanliness and his responsibility as God's creature.
1980, finally he was accepted as regular govt employee in sanitation govt. He was very grateful for this. And his beautiful moment happened when Cicendo Ophthalmology Hospital won award as the cleanest hospital in West Java province.
His dedication toward cleanliness made him got a number of awards. From Bandung city major at 1987 and 2001, from West Java governor at 1989 and 2002. Even he got award that given directly by Minister of population and Environment, DR.Emil Salim, beside some awards from other parties.
In 1999, Mr.Sariban pack retired from his job as govt employee, but it didn't stop him to always work to clean up Bandung city, voluntary. He is only retired from sanitation dept, but he does not retired from his dedication on cleanliness.
Now if you visit Bandung city, maybe you would see an old man in yellow clothes who rides old bicycle and picking up trashes or unplug spikes from the trees. He is Mr.Sariban, an environmental hero from Bandung city.
