Asalamualikum,

I'm taking a speech/communications 101 class and our assignment is to do an informative speech and the purpose is TO INFORM on really any topic we feel comfortable with and have enough knowledge.

So I thought that this would be a good dawah opportunity to educate non Muslims about true Islam and let them know something about our religion other than what they hear on mainstream media.

The speech time limit is 7 minutes which I wish was longer because this is a pretty complex subject. Especially when you have to clear up all the past brainwashing the media has done and remove the hateful thinking.

So I was hoping to receive your guys help in constructing this speech. Basically ideas on which ideas should cover because I can't cover everything in detail in just 7 minutes.

I was thinking of opening with my background as being an American Muslim so I can understand why they would feel negatively towards Islam, but at the same time, I know for a fact what Islam really is. I first have to make them comfortable to accept the information.

But the purpose is NOT to persuade, just inform (according to the assignment rules). So I don't want to get too emotional and begin trying to make them think that they are WRONG to hate on Islam or trying to convert them to Islam. I just have to inform/increase their knowledge.

I just want to give them information that they can easily accept as being reasonable. So some ideas I got from brainstorming would be... I wrote this down in my notebook which is not accessible to me so inshAllah once I get that, I will update this post. Meanwhile, I want you guys to put in your input on what I can add to this speech to give to non muslim college students of different age and ethnic background. Keep the time limit in mind so we need to filter down to the most important and impactful topics I should cover in the 7 minutes.

Salaam to you.

Not really an easy thing to do.... 7 minutes.... Here is a brief that is written by one of our 'mods' here (Insaanah). Read it as it is quite a nice summary. Perhaps you can elaborate from there.

All the best.

Greetings and peace be with you An Alien;

Seven minutes is good, it will keep you focused, speak of your own personal journey and how Islam affects you.

Why do you pray five times a day, more than other religions ask?
Why do you fast, how does it help you?
Why do you give Zakat?
Why do you think dressing modestly is good?
Islam and marriage
what good things does Islam inspire you to do?
There is no compulsion in religion.
Why Halal food?
Salvation.

Just some thoughts

Blessings

:ma:, I certainly agree this is a good da'wah opportunity.

7 minutes is indeed very short, so you have to be very precise in what to include. It won't be possible to go into detailed explanations, so the idea is to deliver a simple yet key message, an introduction to Islam, that will :ia: cause people to want to know more. I don't think it will be possible to go into misconceptions unless there is time for Q&A, in which case you will need to prepare the answers!

I think topics that must be included are: the concept of God/Tawheed, the Prophet Muhammad :saws: (and can include mention of Prophets in general), and the Qur'an. There should also be a summary of the purpose of life. Something like the first post here: http://www.islamicboard.com/discover...tart-here.html

You can browse websites which provide concise information like the leaflet posted earlier, to give you more ideas of how to deliver the information.

If there is time, then maybe there could be a page listing and addressing some of the top misconceptions? It will need more thought depending on the time available after you have put together the main part.
