The Dates for the 9th & 10th of Muharram 2013


The 9th of Muharram is on Wednesday 13th November

The 10th of Muharram (Day of Ashura) is on Thursday 14th Nov.*

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said regarding the day of Ashura:

"It is a great day when Allah saved Musa (As) & his people & drowned Pharaoh & his people".(Muslim)*

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) also said: "Fasting on it expiates the previous year of sins." (Muslim)*

It is recommended to fast a day before or after the day of Ashura in order to differ from the Jews who also fasted on this day. Therefore we should fast either the 9th & 10th of Muharram (Wed 13th Nov & Thurs 14th Nov) or the 10th & 11th of Muharram (Thurs 14th & Fri 15th Nov). Alternatively one may fast on all 3 days.

Therefore let us make the best of this opportunity to fast on this auspicious occassion and to fulfill this Sunnah and gain immense rewards as well as a years sins forgiveness.

Surely we are all in dire need of as many good deeds as possible in our accounts before our imminent departure from this world which could be at any second.*

The Historical Significance of ‘Ashura



Ibn Abbas (RA) reports that the Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Sallim) arrived in Madinah and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ‘Ashura… They said:"It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Musa ('Alaihis-Salaam) and his people and drowned Pharoah and his people, and Musa ('Alaihis-Salaam) observed fast out of gratitude. And we also observe it." The Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim) responded:"We have more right, and we have closer connection with Musa ('Alaihis-Salaam) than you have"; so Allah’s Messenger (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim) observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashura) and gave us orders to observe it. [Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]


May Allah enable us to benefit from fasting on these days and make us closer to him throughout the year. Ameen

An entire year of sins wiped out


The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope from Allah He will expiate or remove the sins of the year that came before.*(Muslim)*

The Scholars have explained that the sins that are expiated are the minor sins. So all of our good deeds, that is the salah, each obligatory prayer, fasting the month of Ramadhan, and so on, all of these expiate the minor sins.*So inshallah, for fasting one single day, ones whole year of sins is wiped away. So it is really an amazing blessing from Allah.*

It is something we cannot afford to miss out on for we may not be alive to benefit from such a good deed again as life is uncertain and on the day of judgement we will beg each other for a single good deed for we will all be short of good deeds on that day.*

So Let Us grab all the good deeds we can now whilst we are still alive!*
