Salam alaykum,

In the silent prayers, do you have to recite the fatiha and the rest that you don't hear or do you just stand in qiyam position and do what the imam does?

Wasalaam..

The prayers done in the day, Zuhur and Asar are the silent ones. Yes, you do have to read on your own silently as the imam silently reads his.

Peace.

Jazak Allahu khayr. Is it wajib or sunnah to do that?

I can't answer that as I have no knowledge on this specifically. But if I am not mistaken, there are several items that are wajib in performing of the solat. The 'niat', Takbirratul ihram (is that the correct term? when we say "Allahu akhbar") Al Fatihah, the tashahud and the salaams. Everything else is not compulsory.

Hence it is safe to say that it is wajib to recite the al Fatihah regardless of which prayers you are doing - the daylight silent ones or the night not silent ones. In the day you recite it silently and in the night, you recite it after the imam finishes his recitation (when he reads the second surah).

Peace.

:salamext: brother,

Some acts of worship, like prayer, can be divided into pillars (arkaan), obligatory parts (wajibaat) and recommended (sunan). For a detailed breakdown of what each of these mean and which parts of the prayer belong in which category, you can read this link (but be aware that there may be some variation depending on which maddhab you follow): http://islamqa.info/en/65847

Reciting al-Fatihah falls in the category of a pillar - it cannot be missed out. However, for prayers where the Imam recites out loud, scholars differed as to whether the people behind him need to recite it. There is some discussion about this here: http://islamqa.info/en/10995

And Allaah :swt: knows best.
