Miracle and Karamah

Miracle

Allah Almighty gave miracles to HIS Prophets and Messengers. These were supernatural happenings for or by the prophets to prove their Prophethood.

We can observe the fact that miracles given to the Prophets were such that always surpassed the things happening at that time! The miracles challenged and defeated the prevailing knowledge and its developments!

The examples are:

The Prophet Musa (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) was originally given two miracles;
one was his stick which on throwing on the ground, used to become a huge and fast running snake/serpent. When he picked it up, it changed into stick again. The tafseer says that the snake was so frightening that many people in the palace of Fir’on (Pharaoh) had suffered injuries because on seeing it they pushed back in fear and fell down on each other! Fir’on, himself, also was in fear and said to his people that Musa and haroon (alaihima salaam) were magicians who wanted to expel them from their country by the force of their magic! It is said that normally a big snake moves slowly while a small snake like a viper moves very fast. According to the Holy Quraan the miracle stick-snake of Musa alaihi salaam had both of the qualities i.e. very big and very fast running! It was so big that when it raised its head, it was higher than the walls of the Fir’on’s palace! Along with that it used to run very fast!

Second was his hand which used to shine like the sun when he drew it out from his armpit!

At the time of Musa alaihi salaam, sorcery was greatly developed. So these miracles defeated the magicians of Fir’on. The magicians were so impressed by the miracles that they fell down in prostration to Allah Almighty and became so strong Muslims that they accepted very painful death from Fir’on but didn’t leave Islam!

At the time of the Prophet Eisa {(Jesus)(Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him)} the prevailing thing was the knowledge of hakeems. They had homeopathic type of knowledge which was so much advanced that they could diagnose a disease only from the color or pulse of a patient. Allah The Greatest gave to Eisa alaihi salaam (Jesus) such miracles that surpassed the hikmah of the hakeems. So he (alaihi salaam) could make a blind see by the permission of Allah, could make a leper healthy by the permission of allah and even could make a dead alive by the permission of Allah! He could perform all of these miracles by the permission of Allah Almighty!

The Final Prophet Muhammad (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) was also given many miracles like starting streams of water from his fingers when his companions were in need of water for themselves and for their animals during a journey. One of his great miracle is the Holy Quraan which is also in the hands of his salla allaho alaihi wa sallam Ummah. Thus we are very fortunate people that we have the miracle of the Quraan al Kareem in our hands and then many of us are very unfortunate because they have thrown this great miracle at their backs.

The miraculous verses of the Holy Quraan are now a challenge to the recent discoveries of science!!!
Then let us think about the Miracle of Mairaaj Shareef:
The Prophet Muhammad (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) was made to travel from Masjid al haram in Makkah to the Masjid al Aqsa in Palestine and then from there upward to the seven heavens , and even above them to the Thrown of Allah Almighty, The King of the kings! From there he (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) was brought back to Makkah on the earth, and all of that tremendously long journey happened in one night only!!!

At that time the companions didn’t know that the Ummah of Muhammad (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) will be given the blessings of cars, buses, trains, air planes and space ships etc. So they will be able to travel thousands of miles/kms. In a few hours and that they will be able to travel in the air and space etc. But we, now, can see all of these blessings that Allah The Akram ul Akrameen has given us!!! Now we can understand the Miracle of Mairaaj very well. That was to surpass all of the present sources of travelling!!! So the Prophet (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) had travelled from Makkah to Baital Muqdas and from there was taken up to such heights that none of the modern scientists can ever reach. And then he salla allaho alaihi wa sallam was brought back to Makkah in the same night!

Karaamat:

Kramah is given to very poise, practicing and God-fearing Muslims called awliya- Allah. Who are they? No one can claim that he/she is wali-Allah. Allah knows best. Allah said in the Holy Quraan: Allaho wali-ul-muttaqeen. (Allah is the Protector of those who are muttaqeen). Muttaqee is a Muslim who fears Allah at all times, obeys Allah’s Commands and guards himself/herself from any disobedience to Allah. In the first five verses of Suratil –Baqarah we find a few qualities of muttaqeen. Allah also said:

الله ولي الذين آمنوا ---
Surah Al Baqarah verse 257
(It means that Allah is the Protector of those who believe)

Regarding karamat we must remember two things:

  1. Karamat is not a permanent thing. It may happen suddenly and occasionally at the hands of a good and sincere Muslim and may never happen again. It is not in the hands of the person at all.

  1. A Muslim who is given karamah should keep it secret and shouldn’t declare it.

For karamah I can give the example of Umar رضي الله عنه :
Once, during his khilafat, the Muslim army was far away ( perhaps it was at the boarder of Faaras). One day when Umar rAa was giving a speech in the masjid, he suddenly said: “ Siriya, al jabal, al jabal”. People asked him about these words but he kept silent. Afterwards, when the army was back, the soldiers told the people that on such and such day they heard the words of Umar rAa and became attentive towards the mountain at their back. They found that the enemies were managing to attack them from the back by coming on the mountain. So the Muslim soldiers became alert and managed to fail the enemy.

This is the example of karamah, i.e. a supernatural happening. Allah The Greatest showed the enemy soldiers to Umar rAa from such a great distance and also made the Muslim soldiers hear his words from Madinah in Saudi Arabia to Faaras.

There are many other examples of karamah but time is too short to mention them.

There is a 3rd thing called istadraaj. This is a type of inspiration that happens even to the non-Muslims. The example given by the scholars is that all inventions happened due to inspiration and guidance from Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta’ala. Always it happened that a person said that he got such and such idea to make a new thing like an electric bulb or a steam engine, etc.
