Important: Fasting 9th & 10th Muharram (Ashura) on Fri 23rd & Sat 24th Oct 2015
Important Reminder: Fasting 9th & 10th Muharram (Ashura) on Fri 23rd & Sat 24th Oct 2015
The sacred month of Muharram:
Allah's sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein … " (Al-Qur'an 9:36)
Abu Bakarah (Ra) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Waallam) said:
"The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Sha'ban." (Al-Bukhari, 2958)
The Day of Ashura (10th Muharram) a great day:
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said regarding the 10th of Muharram (The Day of Ashura):
"It is a great day when Allah saved Musa (As) & his people & drowned Pharaoh & his people" [Muslim]
"Fasting on it expiates the previous year of sins." [Muslim]
Fasting the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th of Muharram:
It is recommended to fast the 9th & 10th of Muharram. If one does not fast the 9th then the 10th and 11th. This is in order to differ from the Jews who only fasted on the day of Ashura & because the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) intended to fast the 9th & 10th of Muharram.
The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Muharram:
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) also says, "The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is prayer at night." [Muslim 1163]
We should make the best of the immense rewards available for optional fasting during this sacred month and fast on the Sunnah days of fasting which include each Monday and Thursday as well as the white days in which it is Sunnah to fast the 13th, 14th and 15th of each Islamic month. The 13th, 14th and 15th of Muharram will fall on Tuesday 28th (13th), Wed 29th (14th) and Thurs 30th (15th) Oct.
We should not miss out on such opportunities to gain immense rewards and forgiveness of sins because on the day of Judgement we will beg one another for a single good deed even our own Mothers but NO ONE will give us any because we will all be in need on that day so we must grab whatever we can of good deeds now before it is too late!
May Allah enable us to act upon this and fast on these days in order to gain the good deeds and forgiveness of sins that come with it. Ameen
