Since the dawn of time, the lure of material wealth has had a devastating impact on the human soul and society. The gap today between the world’s richest and poorest is at an all time high. The economies of the world are built upon an inherently unjust and unnatural riba-based system of wealth creation from nothing and exploitation of the poor. Unislamic and generally unethical and dishonest business practises such as cheating permeate even Muslim communities. The plethora of social ills that result from destructive and unjust economic practises have motivated many— including Muslims—to attempt alternative financial products and services less damaging to society.

This panel will discuss some of these social ills and critically evaluate the successes and failures of attempts to provide less harmful, halāl alternatives.
