Allah says:
وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَأَنْسَاهُمْ أَنْفُسَهُمْ
“And do not be like those who forgot Allah and thus He made them forget themselves ..” (Al-Qur’an)
He despises himself. He doesn't want to be alone with himself at any expense.
In fact, it could simply be a few minutes at the doctor’s surgery where he awaits his turn but even those short moments seem far too long.
He restlessly browses through the magazines stacked ahead of him, as if to say:
“I can’t be left alone with myself”
He aimlessly scrolls through his mobile phone contact list, as if to say:
“Give me anything! Just distance me from myself!”
He’ll examine the posters on the wall letter for letter, as if to say:
“This will do! This will do! Just don’t make me confront myself”
A miserable state, but what happened?
Ah, the demands of life had occupied him. Yes, he’d pray but only physically. Years and years passed till he’d eventually forgotten Allah .. so Allah made him forget his self.
Now, he has become his own arch enemy, unable to sit with himself in solitude for a mere moment .. to ask:
“Who brought me here?”
“Why am I here?”
“Where am I going?”
“What on earth am I doing with my life?!”
If the symptoms above apply, then let it be your siren.
