I like to go metal detecting. It's fun and you get to explore the earth. Is it haram?

One of the beauties of Islam.

The preponderant position according to the vast majority of the scholars (al-rajih `inda al-jumhur) is that in our Religion “the default in things is permissibility” (al-aslu fil-ashya’ al-ibaha) until proven haram.

And it could come useful for Arabs who still think that Dhul Qarnayns barrier still stands - go find it I say :D
