I had a question about this verse.

“None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute
something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah hath power over all things?”
(Qur’an 2:106).

What are some major examples of these better revelations?

Thanks,
Jim

Thank you. In regards to the Mecca and Medina periods of Muhammad's life, what
Quranic verses abrogate each other?

Thanks,
Jim

Allah abrogated the confinement to secluded place for life for adulterers, and put in it's place stoning

The reason why we cannot find many examples of abrogated verses is because most of them were lifted up by Allah :swt: after the abrogation. So what we have now is the better replacements.

One such example is the duration of fast. In early days, Muslims were only allowed to eat between Maghrib and 'Isha (from sunset until approximately one hour). Later Allah :swt: revealed this verse which allowed us to eat and drink until dawn.

It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah , so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous. [2:187]

In some other cases, the ruling was abrogated but the verse was not, and we can find such verses in the Qur'an. One such example is the instruction by Allah :swt: to spend some wealth in charity before meeting the Messenger of Allah :saws:. Allah :swt: says:

O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [58:12]

This was abrogated later by the next verse,
Have you feared to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and Allah has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do. [58:13]

It has been narrated that 'Ali :ra: was the one who hastened to fulfill this instruction before its abrogation because he knew in hindsight that it will be difficult for the companions to fulfill it due to their financial conditions and Allah :swt: will abrogate it.

Something What I know about Quran and the Concept of Abrogation (Naskh):

Surah Al Kahf Verse 27

And recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge.

When referring to this Book i.e. The Holy Quran, Allah (swt) had made it plain and clear that there no changes can take place in regards to His words. Therefore many of us believe that no words of Al Mighty God revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu Alaihi Wassallam) were ever abrogated.

As for this Verse of the Quran in Surah Baqara Verse 106, it can also be translated as following:

Any message which we annul or consign to oblivion We replace with a better or a similar one. Do you not know that God has the power to will anything?

Or as you shared

The word that Allah (swt) used for 'Message' or 'Revelation' in Arabic is Ayah, which many of the translators and commentators have translated as 'Verse'. Taking this restricted meaning of the Term Ayah, some scholars concluded from the above passage that certain Verses of the Quran have been "abrogated" by God's command before the revelation was completed.

Muhammad Assad (formerly known as Leopold Weiss), the author of the Message of the Quran commented on The Above Verse 106 as follows:

"..there does not exist a single reliable tradition to the effect that the Prophet ever declared a verse of the Quran to have been "Abrogated". At the root of the so-called "doctrine of abrogation" may lie the inability of the some of the early commentators to reconcile one Quranic passage with another: a difficulty which was overcome by declaring that one of the verses in question has been "abrogated". This arbitrary procedure explains also why there is no unanimity whatsoever among the upholders of the "doctrine of abrogation" as to which, and how many, Quran-verses have been affected by it: and, furthermore, as to whether this alleged abrogation implies a total elimination of the verse in question from the context of the Quran, or only a cancellation of the specific ordinance or statement contained in it. In short, the "doctrine of abrogation" has no basis whatever in historical fact, and must be rejected...."

He continues....

"....On the other hand the apparent difficulty in interpreting the above Quranic passage disappears immediately if the term Ayah is understood, correctly, as "Message", if we read this verse in conjunction with the preceding one, which states that the Jews and Christians refuse to accept any revelation which might supersede that of the Bible: for if read in this way, the abrogation relates to the earlier divine messages and not to any part of the Quran itself."

The preceding Verse 105 clearly mentions Jews and Christians do not accept any one else should be recipient of Revelation except their own communities:

Neither those from among the followers of earlier revelation who are bent on denying the truth, nor those who ascribe divinity to other beings beside God, would like to see any good ever bestowed upon you from on high by your Sustainer; but God singles out for His grace whom He wills - for God is limitless in His great glory.

'would like to see any good every bestowed upon you from on high by your Sustainer' implies revelation, a Book, A new Message i.e. Quran.

When 106 is understood against the background of 105 then it makes perfect sense.

Welcome to the Holy Month of Ramadaan - the Month of the Quran :).

Hi Jim,

It will be necessary to know the real meaning of Abrogation The Arabic word is Mansookh is often translated as abrogation which probably isn't the exact meaning since it actually has some negative implications to it such as scrapping and quashing. Rather there is no exact equivalent word in English for 'Mansook ' of Arabic. .Who could give a better explanation of the meaning of abrogation except Allah swt himself as we see in this verse describing abrogation from the Noble Quran itself.

Noble Quran 2:106 "Whatever verse (Revelations) do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten but We bring a better one or similar to it."

So the Arabic word Mansookh though is translated as Abrogation but it means it does not throw away the previous verse but it actually brings a better verse than as per the above definition from the Noble Quran itself which refers to a sort of Timely substitution, instead . Also lets see Sahih Bukhari Book #60, Hadith #34 which shows and proves what does this word ' mansook' or so called and translated as ' Abrogation' really stands for ?

Narrated salama: When the Divine Revelation: "For those who can fast, they had a choice either fast, or feed a poor for every day, (2.184) was revealed, it was permissible for one to give a ransom and give up fasting, till the Verse succeeding it was revealed and abrogated it''. .

So does the word ' Abrogate 'in the above hadith of Salama, did it meant cancelling 100% or throwing the part of so called, abrogated verse 2:184 from the Noble Quran below ? No, that's clear from this verse which is read NOWhttp://quran.com/2/184 in the noble Quran as

Noble Quran 2:184 ''(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.''

Which means for those who can leave their fast on valid reasons which is allowed by substituting by feeding the poor but are still ADVISED and stressed by the next & last part of the verse (
so called verse of abrogation by Salama (raa)) that its still will be better if they fast than giving ransom . Which shows that They did not mean that the ruling of the earlier verse was completely replaced or annulled OR THROWN AWAY, but rather that it is no longer general but instead limited or contextualized in some way.

So Here, its Clearly proved that though it is termed as '' Abrogate '' But it really did not mean cancellation but replacing with something better as in the verse 2:106.

So let see
another form of abrogation ( Allah implementing a most difficult commandment for an ADDICT , step by step ) which is regarding the verses of alcohol and see how Allah swt uses it only for achieving better result with ease for the believers and for its successful implementation without pushing them into sin all of a sudden.

step 1) the first verses about wine started saying something like this that There are some benefits in wine but there are lossesas well but the losses are more than benefits,- so they were discouraged first ( Noble Quran 2:219)

step 2) verses said something like this, avoid drinking while you are going to pray or during prayer. This was a great diplomacy here because they could only drink at nights to bed because of 5 times prayer so the habbit was reduced by half(Noble Quran 4:43)

step 3) was completely made Prohibited - Haram .(Noble Quran 5:90-93)

So to quit anyone from a bad habbit is the very difficult thing and particularly Smokers or Drunkards are the top most difficult among them. But see how Allah ''THE ALL WISE '' easily removes in 23 years from the whole society of believers by the method of substitution (Mansook-Abrogation,) where it was believed for a millenium that the stockists, hoarders of the oldest wine at their backyards were the Most privileged ones and its said streams of wine flowing were seen in Medina after the verse of Prohibition was revealed.

So its in Allah swt's knowledge what and when to abrogate (Mansook - substitute )and those apologetics who criticize this is as issue have to understand that their feeble minds do not understand the great wisdom of the Creator, Allah behind what ever he does is in the interest of his believers and in their ease and his Selected Religion, Islam.

Not sure uf I saw any comments on this soecifically but in passing..

I take it slightly differently.. the Books and revelations has come with prophets before.. and the Quran refines those verses revealed in the other Books too?....
