Yes, you should.

There's no difference of scholars on the issue. The Qur'aan itself has stated such meat to be Haraam.

First of all, there is zabiha and there is halal.

Zabiha is islamically slaughter meat. Much like Kosher is for jews.

Halal is what is permissible, including from the people of the book.

So meat slaughter by the people of the books is halal and permissible to eat.

But the thing is that nations like USA is so diversified that you do not know whether the person in the slaughterhouse is an atheist or a practicing christian or a hindu.

and then this:

“And eat not of that whereon Allah's name hath not been mentioned, for lo! it is abomination. Lo! the devils do inspire their minions to dispute with you. But if ye obey them, ye will be in truth idolaters” (6:121).

On the authority of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah said: “Allah the Almighty is good and accepts only that which is good. Allah has commanded the Faithful to do that which He commanded the Messengers, and the Almighty has said: “O ye Messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right..” (Quran 23:51). And Allah the Almighty has said: “O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you..” (2:172). Then he mentioned [the case of] a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and who spreads out his hands to the sky [saying]: O Lord! O Lord!-while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can he be answered!” (Muslim).

So you have to ask yourself, is that questionable meat more important to you or following the deen of Allah.

Meat of the Ahl-ul-Kitaab in Our Time:

Allaah Ta`aalaa says in the Qur'aan:

الْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ وَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ

"On this day, at-Tayyibaat (pure, wholesome things) have been made permissible for you. The food of the Ahl-ul-Kitaab (i.e. Jews and Christians) is permissible for you and your food is permissible for them..." [Soorah al-Maa'idah.]

In another Aayah of the Qur'aan, Allaah Ta`aalaa says:

وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا مِمَّا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّهُ لَفِسْقٌ

"And do not eat from that (meat) over which the Name of Allaah has not been mentioned (when slaughtering), for verily it is Fisq (sinfulness and transgression)..." [Soorah al-An`aam.]

The Qur'aan is understood holistically. Parts are not snatched out and misinterpreted. Parts of the Qur'aan explain other parts.

From these Aayaat, the `Ulamaa have said that during the time of Sahaabah-e-Kiraam, the meat slaughtered by the Ahl-ul-Kitaab was permissible for consumption by Muslims on account of the fact that those Ahl-ul-Kitaab (Jews and Christians) used to take the Name of Allaah Ta`aalaa when slaughtering the animals.

There is great danger in these times in eating meat slaughtered by people who claim to be Ahl-ul-Kitaab; it is best to avoid it and stick to meat slaughtered by Muslims. Then too, slaughtered in the correct manner.

Two primary conditions must be found for meat slaughtered by anyone - Muslims or the so-called Ahl-ul-Kitaab of today - to be considered Halaal:

  1. The animal is slaughtered by cutting the throat and oesophagus and letting the blood flow. If the animal is killed in any other manner, whether it be through strangulation, beating, electric shock, drowning, or any other method, the meat will be Haraam.
  2. The Name of Allaah Ta`aalaa must be taken when slaughtering, and no one else's name should have been taken. Meaning, if the slaughterer took the name of Jesus, for example, the meat is Haraam.

Dont risk eating meat from people other than muslims, as Brother Huzaifah explains above, especially since we know they dont say the name of Allah when slaughtering to make it halal.

Do the Christians of today regard themselves as ahle Kitab?

Are they slaughtering animals in the name of Allah?

Those are questions we cant answer in the positive with certainty.

Be very careful of where your meat sources come from. Make sure it is halal before eating it.

You should also ask yourself why you are going to ask such questions like this one. If you think that eating non-halal meat isn´t a big deal, you soon might ask yourself is it necessary to avoid other bad habits (sins). Be careful young brother with kind of thoughts and remember that its the Shaytan who puts kind of thoughts to people´s minds.
