95, Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad from Ibrahim that Alqamah ibn Qays and al-Aswad ibn Yazid said, 'We were with ibn Mas'ud when suddenly it became time for the prayer. So he stood to pray and we stood behind him, but he made one of us stand on his right and the other on his left and then he stood between us. When he finished he said, "Do it like this when you are three." When he bowed he placed his hands together, palm to palm, and he prayed without the call to prayer or the iqamah saying, "The iqamah of the people around us suffices us.

So he said, 'Do you forbid me to recite behind the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam)?' And they quarrelled until that was mentioned to the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam). ...yikes I been doing it wrong forever!

I always wash thrice.

At least it does not say, with one glass of water.

No, you are doing it right. Washing thrice is the Sunnah. Washing at least once is fardh.
Washing twice is when you already have wudhu and you want to do it again for the next prayer, or if you are travelling and you want to save water or some other similar reason.
