Salam Alaikum!

Recently I heard that modern native arabs find the word "nikah" to be offensive and prefer the word "zawj". An I saw some arabs saying that the word "nikah" means ---, and that they don't prefer it. Is this true or were they just pulling my leg :P

Walaikum Asalaam,

Nikkah is widely understood in the arab nations as is. However, yes there is a slang derivative of the word which means something inappropriate and therefore it is preferred in some arab countries to say zawaj instead. The slang derivative and the word nikkah are two different words though.
