The Quran orders us to pray, but does it show how to?
No.The Hadiths do.
Similiarly, there are guidelines for this "beating."And they are present in Hadiths. And Hadiths, like Quran, are revelations.
1)-It should not be on the face
2)-It should not hurt.
Yes.You read it write.
3)-It should not leave a mark.
But what kind of beating does not hurt?
A Companion had the same question. And he went to Ibn Abbas and asked him this question.
Ibn Abbas was by far,the Greatest Quranic Scholor Muslims ever had.And he was the companion of The Prophet(Peace be upon him).
Ibn Abbas replied:
"Hitting with a Siwaak(Toothbrush) and the like."
The Hadith is authentic.

Practical example of this is 'patting.'Can you think of anything other than patting?
But now think critically.
Consider a man finds his wife having intimacy with someone else.
Will he not be angry?
And in his Anger,he is most likely to severely beat his wife and this case is most prominent from actual events. He may even kill her.
But in Islam,
He cannot beat her.He can only pat her.Or strike her in a way that does not hurt at all.
So hence,Islam stops from wife beating, not condones it.

But why does Islam allow a man to strike her even in that gentle way?
When a man does strike his wife in such a manner,
As the Husband and wife have a unique relation which is also emotional,
Even that gentle pat will mean much to the wife.It is a sign that Husband is displeased with her(justly, unjust anger will not be a reason for him to strike her) and she may mend her ways. And because of their unique relationship,That gentle strike may mean a lot to the wife.Hence, she may mend her ways.

It was narrated that: Sulaiman bin Amr bin Ahwas said: “My father told me that he was present on the Farewell pilgrimage with the Messenger of Allah. He praised and glorified Allah, and reminder and exhorted (the people). Then he said:
'I enjoin good treatment of women, for they are prisoners with you, and you have no right to treat them otherwise, UNLESS they commit clear indecency. If they do that, then forsake them in their beds and hit them, but without causing injury or leaving a mark if they obey you, then do not seek means of annoyance against them.
You have rights over your women and your women have rights over you. Your rights over your women are that they are not to allow anyone whom you dislike on treat on your bedding (furniture), not allow anyone whom you dislike to enter your houses. And their right over you are that should treat them kindly with regard to their clothing and food.(Ibn e Majah vol 3,hadees 1851) Grade : Sahih
