:salam:
We had a writing contest at the beginning of this year and we had announced that there will be a
poetry contest sometime later. But due to lack of activity on the forum, we kept postponing it.
If there is enough interest, we can go ahead and host a contest now. So are you interested in participating?
Vote above on the poll or simply post a reply below.
Update:
The contest has already started a few days ago. Keep sending your entries by PM to me. Here are a few guidelines copied from a previous contest, with a few additions/updates:
So here's the deal...
1) PM you poem to me
2) You have until the 15th20th of November 2017 (extended until 20th of November)
3) You can write about anything at all Insha'Allah, as long as there is nothing anti-Islamic
4) please do not share your entry with anybody (that should go without saying)
5) there is no need to advertise the fact that you are entering insha'Allah
6) No encouraging friends to vote for you insha'Allah
7) You shall be disqualified (:shade:) if you plagiarise. It must be your own work. No copying and no translating existing poems from other languages
8) The most important thing is other members not knowing which poem is yours...
Other than that, get PM'ing me insha'Allah :D

I'm not sure how many of our visitors speak any other common language, so let's stick with English for the time being.
Urdu, Arabic or Bangla competitions can be held in their own sub-sections.

Yes, we can go ahead and start it now as we have at least 8 members willing to participate. Is there anyone willing to host the competition? Or you can simply send your entries to me by PM.
I think we can fix the last date for submission as 15 November 2017.

It might just be me but - I think the second option outweighed the first.
Questions:
1. Who are the Judges ?
2. What criteria is used to judge?
3. Are we allowed to discourage others from entering so that ....well...the contestants are fewer hence the chance of winning is greater ?

1. Judges are the members of IslamicBoard, those who are not participating. Once we get all the entries, we post them anonymously on a separate thread with a poll, asking everyone to vote for the best entry.
2. Everyone has their own perspective.
3. No, encourage everyone to participate.

LIL competition"
And brother

We are planning to have a competition for minors should you wish to enter.

No, the host promotes the contest, collect all entries until the deadline, and then posts them using his own account on a separate thread without disclosing the username of the participants. He has to create a poll on that thread for everyone to vote.
The judges are the members, no change to that. The host cannot be the judge himself because he will obviously know who has written which poem.

This is a big decision for me as I wanted to enter the competition (and obviously win the prize) - I have to think about it.

Here's my poem, for all you poetry fans,
all you sugar plum fairies eyeing up my iced mocha cans,
my ray bans are clocking spock spotting kirk the jerk putting in the work,
they also notice the so called believer willingly committing shirk,
my shirt - coffee stained - as I splutter out the frothy remains
outraged beyond rage, i remain amazed at those lame brains,
so dose up on double shot espresso, get the head ready,
unplug from the mains, refrain from tom dick and freddy,
find Ahmed on speed dial and dial speedily,
arrange "let's meet up tonight before Magrib at the masjid bro" easily
yeah, keep it free, sow that seed and know that creed
silently pray Tarek Mehanna get freed, for wounds to heal and not bleed,
one two and three'd wars witness the core of mankinds fall
welcome to the evildoers delight, the midnight ball, that free for all,
you can even buy an evil deed for pittance at one of those stalls,
and drown out the muezzin who makes that 5 a day call,
hold up, the only five a day you got sold was vitamins and minerals,
pepped up on pills your toothless grill got gilded with bleached enamels,
nah I aint got this twisted, Oliver didn't eat olives either,
the story teller was actually a weaver, who painted a beaver
into a skunk, three white lines on its back and a witch hunt with a meat cleaver!
I sigh, coz its always the best of believers, vilified, tried and fried,
yet remaining dignified til their last,
coz I witness they breathing their last with an air of class, far surpassed,
unimagined as my eyes see what the will writ into what the well oiled quill spit,
trip horizontal dead tone bleep pit, stop and switch trip.
Now I pray so I lift up my hands, and find them stained with the remains of my mocha cans.

ok - I made the life changing decision and decided I will stand down from the competition and host it. I would have won it anyway so I guess its a chance to the give ...well....the lesser skilled a chance to win it.
I am typing the Rule book and it will be out this afternoon GMT.
So what do you need to do ? How do I receive the poems etc?

Only two poems have more than 1 vote. One of them was also voted by the author as well, so there is actually a tie between them.
Some of the members are only using our mobile app and they cannot vote. Instead, they have clicked 'like' on the poems. If we consider those likes, then there are 3 poems which have similar number of votes+likes.
We do need a few more votes to determine the winner.

I think it´s ok to extend voting time. As I remember, when we had writing contest at the last time, there too came more votes after extension of voting time. We can wait few more days.
But now hurry up members and vote!

Hello All,
I enjoyed all the poems very much. Poem 7 was my favorite -- just a wonderful rhythm to it. Congratulations to Tuba for touching everyone's hearts and winning it all :D
Anatolian, I'm glad you liked my poem! There's a story behind it: Several years ago, while I was helping my mother and step-father move into a new house, I found a very interesting medallion on a chain. It was plain metal, with a beautiful design on the front, and on the back it read: "To Bev, from Roy, with love." This was a gift that my father had handmade for my mother when they were young. My father died of brain cancer when I was 6 years old, so finding something like that meant a lot to me. I was going through some very tough times, and I used the experience as an inspiration to push me forward. Writing that poem was very spiritual for me.
Thanks all for reading and contributing to this celebration of poetry. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
