In very simple and brief terms, the basic tenet of Tawheed that every believer says is ‘There is no idol but He (Allah), 2:163, and yet Al-Quran declares that the majority of people who believe in Allah associates partners with Him (12:106). There are no idols but Allah, therefore as soon as we start idolizing anyone (or any fascination/temptation/philosophy) besides Him, the problem starts.
The believers may be well able to avoid physical idols, however are they able to avoid psychological idols as well. Lets have a reality check with Ayas of the Book;

“And most of them do not believe with Allah without associating (others as partners) with Him!”
Are we holding on to some personalities believing that serving these personalities will bring us nearer to Allah because they are Allah’s beloved. Then please take heed of below Ayat:

“Isn’t the Din (Judgment) purely for Allah ? But those who take protectors (Walis) besides Him (say). “We do-not serve them except that they are nearer to bring us closer to Allah.” Truly Allah will judge between them in what they differ. Verily Allah does not guide him who is a liar, kafir/rejector/coverer.”
And no one could rightfully be called for divine matters except for Allah.

“That is because Allah is the Haq/Truth, and whoever else they call other than Him is Falsehood; and indeed Allah,- He is the Most High, Most Great.”
If someone praises and glorifies only Allah in a gathering, do we feel that some others/our favorites should be glorified and remembered with Allah too, as praising Allah alone is not sufficient. If we feel that, then we should heed the below Ayat seriously:

“When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the hereafter, are filled with resentment. But when others are mentioned apart from Him, they begin to rejoice. “
Are we following/serving certain list of names for whom Allah has not revealed any authority in His Book, only because our surroundings and our forefathers have been doing the same. This is addressed in below Ayat;

“They are but Names you have named them, you and your fathers, Allah has sent down with it no authority. These people follow nothing but conjecture and what their souls desire; and surely the guidance has come to them from their Lord.”
The people who are called for help in divine matters, are just people like yourself. Allah has not allowed calling anyone as per below Ayat. It is only other people who have made you believe that it is rightful to call them.

“Verily those whom you call upon besides Allah are servants like you. Call upon them, and let them respond to you, if you are (indeed) truthful!”
Allah asks a question in below Ayat, is Allah not sufficient for his servant?

“Is not Allah enough for his Servant? But they try to frighten you with others besides Him! for such as Allah leaves to stray, there can be no guide.”
Many people have great fascination with Golden words/Zukhrif al Qaul/Aqwale Zareen. They spend much effort in collection, remembrance, authentication of the same. The below Ayat states that doing it is like being enemy to the prophet:

“And likewise ,We have made for every Prophet the satans of mankind and the satans of jin an enemy, they inspire golden words on one another, for the purpose of delusion, and if your Lord had willed they would have not done it, so leave them and what they have invented.”

“And they have not been commanded except to serve Allah purely in the Din/Judgment, being true/focused; and to establish Prayers; and to give Zakat/justification; and that is the rightly established Din/ Judgment.”
One of the idols mentioned in Al-Kitab is Sowaa i.e time period/Era. We shouldn’t be stuck and fascinated with a particular period of time or people of some bygone era in order to avoid pitfall of personality worship, as per below Ayat:

“Those were the people that has passed away. They shall reap the fruit of what they did, and you of what you do! and you will not be questioned of what they did.”

@Alkitabadvocate - i believe the term ilah doesn't mean "idol" in general context - although idols are sometimes wrongly taken as objects of worship. There are sometimes contexts in which certain meanings of terms merge based on angular perception which could possibly be either falawed or accurate - however as a general rule - ilah means god and Allah :swt: means the One and Only Almighty God.
The term laa ilaaha illa Allah itself firstly proclaims the fallacy of other gods or demi-gods, and then confirms the factual Oneness of Almighty God.
The unique nature of Allah :swt: is exalted above people's ability to make subjective comparisons such as "ring in a desert" ad infinitum -since Allah :swt: is where such comparisons end - as nothing contains Him.
There is a clear reason why "ilah" is used in the general sense during the statement of shahaadah, and Allah :swt: is used in the absolute sense.
Ilah can be used in subjective argument whereas Allah :swt: is transcendent - therefore using the term "idol" for both "ilah" and "Allah" do not hold up to logical reasoning at all - since the former is used in subjective comparison whilst the later is used in unequivocal statement and cannot be demoted to the lower term idol in any way whatsoever.

Here's an iq representation:
If all idols (worldly gods) are false ilahs, and no false ilah is Allah, and Allah is the only real ilah - is Allah and idol?

The circle representing "Allah" stands totally above all that is falsely associated with Him.

Whereas the term "ilah" can be used in the sandbox in order to come to an understanding of what is true and what is false - and only the true one can be attributed upwards to describe Allah :swt:

Is it true that all generalizations are false?
No, all generalizations are not false. There is no paradox unless you state that they are all false, in which case you would be making a generalization about generalizations.

If all Bloobs are Toogs and no Toogs are Goppers then you can be certain that absolutely no Goppers are Bloobs?

Yes. No Goppers are Bloobs and No Bloobs are Goppers.

Yes, Illah= god (false god)
Allah is, The the one and absolute God

Idols (physical and psychological) represent Illahs (false gods)

Ilahs (false gods) mentioned in Al-Kitab | Topics from The Book (Al-Kitab)
Ilahs/Idols or false gods are those which obstruct a person-from following Allah’s orders and His straight path. Illah’s can be physical or psychological. Allah has granted human beings with wisdom and emotions. The wisdom must control the emotions and it-should govern itself as per Allah's orders . If emotions start controlling wisdom instead,-then-they have the…...

Ilah generally means something more than asnaam (false created gods) -eng: "idols" which are false gods (baatuil aalihah) full stop, whereas the correct ilah is the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens and of the earth besides whom there is no ilah, He is referred to by the name Allah in the Arabic language and generally by Muslims.
Wa ilaah u kum ilaah un waahid does not mean "and your false god is only one false god", it means: "and your god is one god - laah ilaah a illaa hu "there is no god but He"

Are you pissing about on purpose or something?
