Prophet Muhammad(Peace be Upom Him) taught us to love God and to obey Him. He taught us to be kind to each other, to respect our elders, and care for our children. He taught us that it was better to give than to receive and that each human life is worthy of respect and dignity. He taught us to love for our brothers and sisters what we love for ourselves. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upom Him) taught us that families and communities are essential, and he pointed out that individual rights although important are not more important them a stable, moral society. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upom Him) taught us that men and women are equal in the sight of God and that no one individual is better then another except in respect to his or her piety and devotion to God. All the Muhadditheen and Historians are unanimous on the fact that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was bestowed with the mantle of prophethood on a Monday. However, there is a difference of opinion regarding the actual month in which he was blessed with nubuwwah.

Haafiz ibnu ‘Abdil Barr (rahimahullah) says that he was blessed with prophethood on the eighth of Rabee’-ul’Awwal. Hence, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was exactly forty years old when he became the Nabi of Allah Ta‘ala.

According to Muhammed bin Ishaaq (rahimahullah), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was blessed with prophethood on the 17th of Ramadhaan. According to this view, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was forty years and six months at the time of receiving prophethood.

Haafiz ibnul Hajar (rahimahullah) has mentioned in Fat-hul Baari that the latter view is the preferred view and correct view, as it was in Ramadhaan that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would remain in i’tikaaf in the cave of Hiraa’ (and it was during the i’tikaaf in Hiraa’ that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was blessed with prophethood).

Rabee‘ah bin ‘Ibaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says:

I once saw Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in the markets of ‘Ukkaaz and Zul Majaaz inviting people towards Islam saying:

يا أيها الناس قولوا لا إله إلا الله تفلحوا

O people! Say “Laa Ilaaha Illallah” and you will be successful!

While he was inviting people towards Islam, I saw a squint-eyed man walking behind him and calling out to the people, “This man has renounced the religion of his forefathers and he is a liar!” When I asked the people who this man was, they informed me that he was the uncle of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Abu Lahab.

According to another version of this Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was calling the people saying:

يا أيها الناس إن الله يأمركم أن تعبدوه ولا تشركوا به شيئا

O people! Allah commands you to worship Him and to abstain from ascribing any partner unto him!

While Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was inviting the people towards Islam, Abu Lahab walked behind him calling out:

يا أيها الناس إن هذا يأمركم أن تتركوا دين آبائكم

O people! This man is commanding you to renounce the religion of your forefathers! Do not listen to him!

The pinnacle of Allah’s creation, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), was inviting people towards Islam and Daar-us-Salaam (Jannah) while Abu Lahab was calling people towardsنارا ذات لهب(the blazing fire of Jahannum).
